“Best of both worlds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2009

This is a splendid hotel, Moroccan character with modern reliability. Mostly very friendly and helpful staff. Three swimming pools, a full spa and hamman Four restaurants, mostly very high standard cuisine, not sure about the pink chicken in the 'Indian' restaurant but the rest was very good. One complaint was that paying for half board in advance cost 25% more than it would have done just to pay cash on the night. But hey, Marrakech is all about bargaining and they did give us an upgrade.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2009

We booked a last minute trio to Marrakech in February, the hype around the city has calmed down but we were keen to see it by ourself and go to a sunny place for a short break away from London winter... This hotel gave us all we wanted, just 3 hours flight away from London, and only 15 minutes taxi ride from the airport, right in the middle of "the action".
We were at first disappointed with the somewhat shambolic aspect of the city but then the puzzle gets solved and the combination of light, colour of buildings ( ocre everywhere ), snow capped Atlas mountain in the background, and the superbe location of the hotel ( right in the middle of it yet feeling like a retreat ). You get woken up by the calls for prayers, so have to be a good sleeper but for the rest this is as exotic as one can dream of. The bedroom ( suite ) was large with a separate room for our 4yrs old son, the staff was friendly - altough a bit amateur-ish but this is really the only thing I would point out , the 3 restaurants offer you plenty of food choice and we were fans of the Asian restaurant on the rooftop, by the heated pool - the hotel has 3 swimming pools, but during winter only the rooftop one is actually used, but this was not problem as scenery is amazing and it never felt overcrowded despite mid term week, a few kids were playing from time to time so the pool could be a bit noisy but they had separated area on the roof as well as a very quiet main pool. The building is superbe, quite large hotel but it felts like a boutique hotel at all time tks to small-ish common area.
The Spa is again large yet plenty of small rooms and great atmosphere in the hotel basement with heated pool, etc...
So strongly recommend the place for a short break, spending one full week there might be too long tough unles you are into carpets, moroccan art, etc and want to spend your time shopping for new furnitures... We did not visit much but the Jardin de Marjorelle is a must see for its amazing colour mix...

My husband and I booked 3 nights at the Jardins Koutoubia in Marrakech as a romantic weekend getaway. We opted for the wellness package which included a hamman and massage, daily breakfast, free airport transfer (though we tipped) and a complimentary room category upgrade. We booked the patio suite and expected to be upgraded to a mini suite. When we arrived at the airport, the hotel shuttle was waiting for us with a sign, right on schedule. The ride to the hotel only took about 10 minutes and they swiftly took our luggage inside the lobby while we checked in and they served moroccan pastries and mint tea. The hotel is very close to the Medina, which is good for sight seeing but bad because it is next to Koutoubia mosque and you will hear the call to prayer early in the mornings and until sunset, though my husband thought it gave a real cultural experience to the trip. The room they gave us, the supposed mini suite was too small for our expectations, we could hear the noise from the inner courtyard from people enjoying the outdoor fireplace, and found ourselves confined to two single beds for our romantic break. My husband complained to reception and they moved us the 2nd night to a junior suite which had a lovely canopy bed and more importantly, a single double bed! The staff was lovely and really did make an effort, but there was always something short of perfect at the hotel, to include no hot water on our 2nd day the water actually was running brown, yuck! They did fix it in less than a day though. There is no clock or alarm clock in the room, so we scheduled a wake up call to find out the phone in our bedroom did not ring and they never managed to fix it so we had to use the alarm on our mobile phone. The food in the onsite Moroccan restaurant is very good an excellent value compared to the tourist trap restaurants that await you outside. Overall, we felt Marrakech was overpriced for what you get in the end and the hotel is not at 5-star level, though they charge ritz carlton prices. If you can find a good price at the hotel and specify exactly what room you want, then it might be okay. The Clarins spa was very nice, the indoor pool is very relaxing and the treatments are top notch.

Positives
- Close to Medina where you can pick up a sightseeing bus and local goods and food. The spice shops have nice selections.
- Onsite spa, rootop heated pool, and good restaurants

Negatives
- Small rooms, and not well maintained (mould on the bathtub, cracks on the walls, phone does not ring, no hot water for one day)
- Service was friendly, but very slow
- Noise from the Koutoubia mosque at the crack of dawn

  • Liked — Close to the Medina
  • Disliked — Overpriced

The Hotel Jardins de la Koutoubia - like a peaceful island retreat in a sea of perpetual motion. Whenever the sounds, the heat or the general melee of souk persistance became too overpowering, the assuring adjacency of this lovely hotel was very comforting. The staff were wonderfully considerate and the amenities could not be faulted. Our break, though short, was interesting and memorable.

We have been in Morocco for 5 days. A short break just to see diferent things and rest. We choose this Hotel and ...is Simply the Best!
The location is perfect: just in the center of the Medina. We don't need taxis, we have where to eat when we want, the souks and everything is near. Al the other 5 stars Hotels don't have this excellent location . TheMamounia is closed so...
The Hotel is very good. At arrivel try some thé a la mente and Morocco cookies. Excellente decoration, Morocco style, plenty of charm, fireplaces, lights, terrrace with nice view of the Medina, swimming pool outodoors with a lovely garden and a patio with a giant fireplace. A very goods Spa of Clarins with a blak swimmin pool, just to relax.
MAGIC! Don't thing again and go!
Every photos you see in the sight are even better.

The hotel is located 200 yards from the Jema' al-fna - the main square in the Medina. From the main square you will explore the Souks (shops selling antiques, leather, and tat). Perfect hotel location when you just want to flee the pestering merchants.

Hotel has 3 pools (one heated on roof, one main outdoor, and one indoor pool & spa). The main outdoor pool is freezing in the winter, the rooftop pool is heated but few guests ventured in, and the indoor is warm. The seating areas around the pools are lovely.

Breakfast is good but little variety from day to day.

Staff are excellent - friendly and helpful. Tipping in cash is greatly appreciated, 10-20 dirhams. They were flexible with late check-out.

The quoted rate calling the property directly does not include 10% tax.

The room we had was in the newly constructed wing of the hotel with its own private garden. Although it's a bit of a maze to find the rooms, I think they were better because most had balconies or patios (if on the ground floor). The rooms overlooking the main pool in the old hotel don't seem to have balconies large enough to sit out on. Medina facing rooms might be a bit noisy but we didn't stay in one.

Overall this is an excellent hotel with a full service offering and superb location. My main complaint was making the reservation. E-mails to the hotel and spa were either ignored or just very slow - one expects immediate responses in this day and age. I gave up and called directly.

Les Jardins is in an ideal location to explore all treasures of the Medina and Jemaa El Fna has to offer in Marrakech ... this is run by genuinely friendly, respectful and culturally knowledged hoteliers who have created a hotel experience which was beyond 5* .... beautiful, luxurious, unique and extremely guest focused..... $450 a night gave access to a wonderfully spacious room with beautiful balcony ...... but I am sure any of the smaller rooms would have been just as good ... and of course, the Clairns Spa ... that is a definite bonus ... well worth the extra $$$ , far superior than any of the high end Riads ... or the 'chains' Hilton, Meridien etc at the other end ... Absolutely Divine! Tassanum Sayed
