“Fantastic stay, lovely staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013 via mobile

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. We stayed here from 1st-5th September to celebrate our sons 21st birthday as a family party of 5 adults. When we arrived we were upgraded to a suite, at no extra cost, even though we had only paid for a triple room. The suite was really lovely. The following day we asked to move to a larger suite as we were sharing with our son, this was not a problem. We were shown a number of suites and chose a 2 room one with balcony. (All the rooms we were shown were different, which makes this hotel so different) We were prepared to pay the extra cost but the hotel manager said as it was our sons birthday it would be a gift from the hotel to us. The rooms were kept lovely and clean and toiletries replenished every day. The air conditioning in the room was fantastic especially when it's 35*c outside.

The pool area is lovely, no problem getting a bed as the pool man puts clean towels out each time the bed is vacated. We only ever used the main pool on the ground floor but there are two other pools.

The breakfast was served around the pool each morning, there was plenty to choose from, wonderful fruit selection omelettes and pancakes cooked to order.

Most lunchtimes we ate in the hotel pool bar which served great salads and fish also great burgers. We found the prices very reasonable and really nice food.

We stayed in the hotel for two evening meals one in the French restaurant and one in the Moroccan restaurant. The meals were ok not fantastic.

The piano bar is great for cocktails and drinks in the evening you can sit outside in the lovely gardens or in the cool air conditioned bar. All the drinks are served with a selection of olives and nuts.
The hotel arranged for a guide (Hamid) to take us around the souks, he was so knowledgeable and well worth paying for.

While the hotel is a little tired in places it adds to the charm, it's quite shabby chic and individual which we loved. It is also a 2 minute walk to the Medina and the Souks. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. A special thank you to Abdul who looked after our party so well, nothing was too much trouble.

We would recommend staying here to our friends and will go back and stay again, we loved it.

We spent 5 days at the hotel. We were upgraded too (lots of reviews say this!). The room was big but a tad worn (plastic toilet seats, shower would not drain, old carpets).
The major negative is the aircon. The hotel simply does not seem to have a proper ventilation system. We complained 3 times, even the hostess who comes around at breakfast, but nothing was done and nobody enquired if it had been sorted, so they are very aware of the problem. I would not recommend this hotel in the Summer time because it gets very hot in Marrakech.
The pools were good. The ground floor one is not heated but the rooftop one is. Breakfast was nice too and we could get free internet in most places including near the pools. Great location. Service was ok.

We are just back from a 4 night stay at JdlK. We were in the cheapest room but for some reason we ended up with a suite which was really pretty big - bedroom, separate sitting room and two bathrooms each with bath and shower. This was way bigger than we expected, and we peeked at other rooms being cleaned and these were a lot smaller so I guess we were just lucky. There was zero noise from other rooms, the a/c was great, it felt reasonably clean and we were pretty happy on the whole.

The servicing of the room let things down a bit - despite two bathrooms, we only had one set of towels and on one day the maid took these and did not replace them so we had to call for more. Our mini bar was not replenished once during our stay either.

I think other people complained about the service, and while it isn't American or Asian levels of service, we found everyone to be helpful - at the font desk changing money or asking for restaurant recommendations or at the restaurant by the rooftop pool where they were pleased to fetch drinks and food.

Breakfast had a good selection and choice including bacon which we thought they might not have. Oddly they had a toaster which took forever to basically turn bread into biscuits and coffee which was sludge, and watered down orange juice. All unforgivable at a supposed 5* hotel I would say. It's so easy to get these basics right. We know they can do fresh OJ - we had it by the pool later on for 25dh (although it is for sale at 4dh in the main square!). We found poolside food and drinks to be a little more expensive than they should have been, and one day we ate the obligatory club sandwich which was very poor.

On the final day, we booked massages at the spa, and expected to be able to use the full facilities while there. The only facilities we were allowed to use were the cold pool, and were told we could not use the hammam. Quite why anyone would use a cold basement pool when there is a hot rooftop one is beyond me. No one was in the hammam, and it was all on and we were paying £100 for two massages yet not allowed in. I feel this is poor. The massages were good though, and they had nice changing facilities.

The hotel is excellently located just a few mins walk from the chaos of the main square, yet immune to the noise.

So, room was better than expected, service was fine, food and drink somewhat of a let down, the spa was mean ... not good at what is supposed to be a 5* hotel. If this is 5*, then I guess La Mamounia must be a 10*. We did have a comfortable stay though, and the rooftop pool is nice. If they styled themselves as a 4* hotel, my rating would be higher.

This is not an amazing luxury hotel like Royal Mansour, Mamounia, La Sultana etc... but at less than half the price it is a great option for most who want good facilities in a central location. We booked a standard room and were amazed at the size and the fact we had 2 bathrooms! turned out we had been given 2 rooms 103 and 104 which would be great if you are planning a family trip. The rooms are a little tired as is the whole feel of the hotel but there was nothing terrible..... oh apart from the man singing in the bar at night... I am not sure if it was a joke??? he was so bad it was amusing! They were a bit mean with the pillows and towels but we survived! The pools are fine with comfy loungers, we found the rooftop pool the nicest place to sit and the staff up there were very friendly and and worked very hard looking after everyone. Breakfast was good enough, however it's slightly irritating that they gave you cheap watery orange juice when you know you can get amazing fresh juice in the square for 4 Dirhams! The tea and coffee were bad too. We had lunch of times by the pools and it was adequate, the Asian option being the better by the room top. We had treatments in the spa on our last day and the facial and massage were good. We were allowed to use the pool in the price of our treatment but not the Hamman which seemed a bit mean given the cost of the treatments.... the pool inside by the way is cold and not worth paying for additionally. With a few tweaks this place could be really great but for the money its not bad....just don't expect too much.

Room Tip: Go for a standard and ask for 103 +104

We have stayed at the Koutoubia several times. The rooms are large enough to easily accommodate our two children (two cribs/pack-n-plays) and there are enough corridors/pathways to give them some running-around room. I would give it five stars but some of the rooms and the corridors are a little run-down (as previous reviewers have noted), but the Indian restaurant on the roof, the Thai restaurant next door, and the breakfast buffet easily make-up for it.

I don't get some of the reviews and ratings here. We have just completed our stay at the hotel and we've had a lovely peaceful time and the hotel and staff have all been great. We had a great holiday and the hotel was the perfect base. We were well treated and looked after perfectly.

It is probably one of the largest and best equipped hotels this close to the centre of the city. So it is perfect, being only 5 mins walk from Jemaa el Fna, the souks and nowhere in the medina is more than about 30 mins walk. If you want a large modern spa hotel then you'll probably be better off further out, or if you want a small cosy riad then go for that - but if you want a hotel with all the 5* facilities AND be close to the centre then this hotel is perfect.

The staff were all friendly and tried their best to help with every request. They didn't always provide the quickest service but that was all part of relaxed atmosphere. The concierge was helpful and we booked two trips and a cookery class, and all our transfers through the hotel - all of which worked out well.

The hotel is based around two large courtyards. The first courtyard contains the main pool and is surrounded at ground level by a lovely garden, the entrance lobby, the bar, one of the restaurants, the cafe and a whole series of quiet cosy alcoves and rooms. At night it is delightful to sit out with a drink, to take in the glinting lights, the gentle local music and the wonderful birdsong.

The other courtyard has a garden overlooked by the patio rooms and suite balconies and contains one of the three restaurants.

There are three pools, the main courtyard pool, the rooftop sun terrace pool and another in the spa. Three restaurants all of which were great although I think the Asian "Jardins de la Bala" was the best.

We had one mix-up. I'd emailed in advance to the hotel to arrange a transfer from the airport however the Moroccan government decided to change daylight saving time at the last minute so there was a misunderstanding about our arrival time. But it was resolved quickly.

As far as rooms are concerned, we were upgraded to a mini-suite so we had a super large bed, then down some steps there was a large seating area - we had a balcony overlooking the garden courtyard and the bathroom was lovely traditional 'old Moroccan style'. The bed, linen and bathroom were clean and well kept and were very comfortable. The rooms had a lot of light and storage space which is often not the case.

The one gripe was a shortage of accessible plug sockets.

One thing highlight though was that on arrival the rooms was beautifully decorated with roses (actually there were roses all over the hotel), water, some nice fruits and a selection of Moroccan pastries. Lovely :) And a sign of how well they look after you :)

Room Tip: The mini-suites are great if you can get one.
