We are just back from a 4 night stay at JdlK. We were in the cheapest room but for some reason we ended up with a suite which was really pretty big - bedroom, separate sitting room and two bathrooms each with bath and shower. This was way bigger than we expected, and we peeked at other rooms being cleaned and these were a lot smaller so I guess we were just lucky. There was zero noise from other rooms, the a/c was great, it felt reasonably clean and we were pretty happy on the whole.
The servicing of the room let things down a bit - despite two bathrooms, we only had one set of towels and on one day the maid took these and did not replace them so we had to call for more. Our mini bar was not replenished once during our stay either.
I think other people complained about the service, and while it isn't American or Asian levels of service, we found everyone to be helpful - at the font desk changing money or asking for restaurant recommendations or at the restaurant by the rooftop pool where they were pleased to fetch drinks and food.
Breakfast had a good selection and choice including bacon which we thought they might not have. Oddly they had a toaster which took forever to basically turn bread into biscuits and coffee which was sludge, and watered down orange juice. All unforgivable at a supposed 5* hotel I would say. It's so easy to get these basics right. We know they can do fresh OJ - we had it by the pool later on for 25dh (although it is for sale at 4dh in the main square!). We found poolside food and drinks to be a little more expensive than they should have been, and one day we ate the obligatory club sandwich which was very poor.
On the final day, we booked massages at the spa, and expected to be able to use the full facilities while there. The only facilities we were allowed to use were the cold pool, and were told we could not use the hammam. Quite why anyone would use a cold basement pool when there is a hot rooftop one is beyond me. No one was in the hammam, and it was all on and we were paying £100 for two massages yet not allowed in. I feel this is poor. The massages were good though, and they had nice changing facilities.
The hotel is excellently located just a few mins walk from the chaos of the main square, yet immune to the noise.
So, room was better than expected, service was fine, food and drink somewhat of a let down, the spa was mean ... not good at what is supposed to be a 5* hotel. If this is 5*, then I guess La Mamounia must be a 10*. We did have a comfortable stay though, and the rooftop pool is nice. If they styled themselves as a 4* hotel, my rating would be higher.
