“Nice hotel and services - go for a mini-suite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

This hotel is in a great location , minutes from the central square and close to taxis to get anywhere else you want to go. The swimming pools are great, a cold one on the ground floor and a heated pool on the roof. We managed to get upgraded to a mini suite with a nice terrace which was great, however we were due to be in a standard Medina view double room. I asked to see this room as well and I have to say if we had not been upgraded I would have been very disappointed in the value for money as this hotel is on the expensive side and the standard rooms are very standard! Everything is very clean, the breakfast and restaurants were great and the staff very very helpful. I would definitely recommend but I would say go for the nicer rooms.

This fantastic hotel is in a perfect location close to the main square in the Medina -it provides a perfect sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of central Marrakech-you can relax in the quiet courtyard by the pool after a hard morning haggling in the souks.
It is incredibly 'soundproof' to the chaos outside both day and night so you can enjoy a quiet drink in the bar or on the terrace before heading out to enjoy a Moroccan dinner
The restaurants in the hotel are a good standard with a variety of cuisine - breakfast provides a wide range of fresh food to set you up for the day.

I am hardly ever compelled to write a review about any hotel I stay in negative of positive, but the treatment we have received from one of the staff was one that was appalling and has motivated me to unfortunately write.

We arrived to stay our last day in Marrakech in the hotel to be greeted by a very unprofessional staff but specifically one in particular who is working in reception. The woman working at the reception desk was completely unprofessional in handling both our check in and check out. She was very rude indeed and had a very disrespectful attitude and tone. At check in her unfriendly mannerism took us by surprise and we thought she might be having a bad day. However, during checkout when asked did we take something from the mini bar, under the assumption that the water was complimentary we said no, as we were leaving she ask the porter to call us back into the hotel and across the hall yelled out that we did not pay and that we have lied. When I confronted her and asked her to speak in a politer manner she continued her unprofessional yelling and hand gestures that I have never seen a receptionist in a 5 star hotel behave! My partner had to also ask her to lower her voice and speak to the clients with some respect. I was about to tell her that we are not trying to save 20 dirhams on a water bottle when we have paid around 3000 dirhams for a room, but refrained from making this obvious comment.

It is unfortunate to have to experience this at a luxurious place like Les Jardin de Kotoubia we were very much looking forward to spending our last night in a nice place, which in our case was really dampened by this woman at reception.

Great location by the main square and souks but, as others have said, far from five star. In need of major upgrade of some rooms and most corridors. To be fair, work was happening on the top floor- sadly loudly during our stay! Our children were given an updated room which was lovely with a good bathroom. Our next door room was old and pretty disappointing with the bathroom floor flooding every shower due to ill fitting shower head and curtain that was too small, air con that rattled loudly unless on full power which made the room too cold. Service and food very variable but that true of everywhere we went in Morocco- we live in Asia where service is generally considerably better. Certainly expected a little more leeway on checkout time. We asked for an extra two hours for one of our two rooms but this was denied. Wish our room had been cleaned so promptly during our stay! We were surprised that the third, indoor, pool was not free. One MAJOR problem for us was the poor wifi. The computers in the computer room were wifi reliant and we could not find anywhere in the hotel where the wifi was reliable. Unfortunately though on holiday wifi was necessary for us on a couple of days and there was none available for many long stretches during our stay. It would not take much to really improve thus hotel and the staff. We visited a smaller riad for dinner which showed what could be done and where the rooms just looked more cared for and where service was excellent with management very visibly monitoring service levels.

First impression is not good - the hotel entrance is on a rather horrible narrow road, full of vehicles, motorbikes, donkey and cart (yes, really!). However as soon as you enter the hotel it opens out into a lovely setting around a stylish pool. Despite organising our pick-up from airport, the hotel said that since it was after 4pm, we had to pay the driver ourselves in local currency - which you can't get in the UK. Hotel therefore paid driver, and asked us to to re-imburse them in euros. What a faff! Why could they not simply charge our room account? Anyway, without asking, our mini-suite was upgraded to a lovely junior suite. Large marble bathroom, separate bedroom, with sitting room opening onto large balcony. Room needed a bit of maintenance, eg poor sealant round bath, sink not draining etc. Le Relais and Jardins de Bala restaurants are great. Fillet steak costs around £14, and nice local wine at £11 a bottle! Moroccan restaurant was not too great, and we were not the only diners to be less than impressed. Hotel reception could not give me change of a 100 note (ie about £8), and we had to wait for a porter to nip round to a shop. Shows that they still have a bit to go to be a 5 star European standard hotel. The Spa is very good, and a full one hour massage was about £50. Heated rooftop swimming pool is lovely, and was never that busy. Staff at the hotel were all friendly and helpful. You are very close to the mosque, and if you are a light sleeper, get ready for calls to prayer at various times of day and night. 5 minute walk to the main square, if you can be bothered - you will either love it or hate it. We thought it was quite awful.

Room Tip: If you have the budget go for a mini-suite or better.

This is by far one of the most beautiful and welcoming hotels in Marrakech. The staff are so kind, polite and really go out of their way to ensure you have a first class stay. The Riad is beautifully decorated with quiet rooms to sit and read a book, or take in the birds singing in the foliage. The centre focal point being the swimming pools and dining area. We tried all of the restaurants and they were equally fantastic, the food was cooked to perfection and served in the same manner. We were unfortunate to be there while building work was on which was slightly off putting hearing that each morning but it didn't spoil the holiday and everything else made up for it. The location of the hotel is perfect if you wish to explore and we took one of the hotel provided trips to Essouria which was a fantastic, cultural, but tiring day out. I booked a luxury suite and it was total luxury with a beautiful and spacious bedroom, balcony over the courtyard, seperate living room and very large bathroom, every morning rose petals were placed in the the bathroom and on the bed, their attention to detail is noticable in all they do. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Marrakech.

The beautiful thing about returning to a Hotel with great staff is the greeting on arrival. It really was a warm welcome and we were ushered to our room very quickly, due to the lateness of the hour. At breakfast all the old faces came to say hello and the pancake lady had a long chat with our 11 year old daughter. The rooms are excellent with service to match. At lunch, the chef even made us a pasta dish as suggested by wife. This is much more then I can say for the "Indian" restaurant on the roof of the hotel. The first time I, we had a miserable experience. I thought I would give the chef a chance to improve and tried to explain to him how we would like the food cooked - he was not interested and even questioned why I would want to eat there. This was a huge favour as we were recommended the original Riyadh Restaurant (Maison Arabe) by the receptionist. The Hotel is well suited for families and the kids were having a fantastic time in the pool. It is even better suited for walking everywhere, due to its very central location. Ideal for the square and souk as this can only be visited in short bursts. In between, one can enjoy some fantastic cocktails in the bar - I would recommend the Mojito. There have been reviews questioning the 5 start status. It is the location, quality and above all the staff, that make it 5 star.

Room Tip: If you can, try for the Junior Suites
