“Correct price-quality relation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2008

This is a very correct 2-star hotel in Marrakech with excellent and quiet location. Relation between price and quality is good. We paid MAD 500 (€ 45) per night breakfast included.

Ask for a room in the upper floor. They are better than those on the ground floor.

Our room (# 18) was very clean with attached bathroom and central heating.

Only negative point : breakfast is served from 8.30 AM, which is much too late. Especially if you want to be the first on the sightseeing spots in Marrakech or if you want to go to Essaouira, since the bus leaves the bus station at 8.30 AM.

Stayed here for the second time..we also came last year..and nothing had changed..service was brill!
I was travelling with a disabled person, but that was really no problem, they have rooms with (more or less) level access, the steps into the building posed no problem, as the staff all jump to carry the chair in and help with access in any way possible.
The breakfast is typical Moroccan...lovely!

  • Liked — The location..5 mins walk from the Jemaa Al Fna square
  • Disliked — No coffee when you want it! Just breakfast

We had high expectations of this hotel after reading the Lonely Planet review. Excellent location and friendly staff especially the lovely lady who did our laundry. However our room was dismal, number 3 on the ground floor, really depressing and poorly furnished and not quite so clean. It was dark and dreary and we could not open the shutters as there was a breakfast table set just outside our window! Due to the huge palm tree in the courtyard there is very little light in this place and this greatly affected our enjoyment of the hotel. At breakfast, possibly due to the tropical plants we were attacked by flies and had to have breakfast in the tv salon. I did ask to change rooms and the staff looked horrified and said they would see what they could do, but nothing came of it and we did not pursue it but rather get on with our trip...breakfast was very nice and fresh. We had to go out to buy some mineral water not available at breakfast. All in all a huge dispointment, don't go if you need daylight! But certainly very cheap...

I stayed at the Hotel Gallia for my last two nights in Marrakech and wished that I had found this place a lot earlier. This charming hotel is centered around two courtyards with flowering trees. My room was spotless and much nicer than the one I stayed in for more than twice as much when I first landed in Morocco. In addition, the staff was wonderfully courteous and helpful. When I asked where I could buy argan oil, the manager asked one of his friends to show me a selection of stores selling the product. He did the same when I asked where I could find bastilla. I felt really welcomed and comfortable here.

100 dirhams (AUD $15) petit taxi from train station to Hotel Gallia in 'side street', welcomed by doorman and shown to my room. Owned by French family since 1920's, run by locals, one of the oldest hotels in Marrakech, central courtyard where bouganvillea drapes a palm tree that reaches for the sky, spacious rooftop terrace, view of rooftops only great a/noon sunny spot, comfy salon with tv, scrubbed top to bottom daily & recommended in Daily Planet. Fresh roses arrive weekly & the sweet perfume permeates the entire building. There are some resident cats which may not appeal to you. Around the corner, down the 'lane" to the promenade that leads to "Le Place". First time, it takes your breath away! Hawkers line the promenade whilst souks and restaurants surround Le Place. Get ready for the drums, the whistles, henna tattooists, magicians, dancers, bbqs, juice vendors and so much more. It comes alive at dusk and I didnt tire of it for 5 nights!. A trip on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus helps get your bearings & will cost 130 dirhams (AUD$18). Escape traditional Morrocan Fare and try Restaurant Alizia in the French Quarter, Hivernage for a change (see Lonely Planet) Dine on balconies overlooking LePLace 6-7pm and get front row table, wait till 8 pm and its harder to get a 'front' position. Marrakech Tourist Office map pretty useless, The Rough Guide Map I bought on line from Amazon worth investing in. Beware few if any street names, use La Katoubia as landmark Traders in the Souks more agressive than in Fes or Essaouira but dont let that dissuade you. Majorelle Gardens with its art gallery and musem is a cool oasis in the heat and craziness of the city & worth a visit. While mule power reigns in Fes its scooter and Vespa power in Marrakech!
You can holiday cheaply here and dine well for 100 dirhams (AUD$15) 4 days would have been enough. Average temps supposed to be low 20's but it averaged 30 in April 08 and still comfortable to get around. Bottled water easily available 5-8 dirhams (AUD$0-90). Petit taxis, cheap and everywhere. See Dar Cordoba, Fes, review. See Villa Maroc, Essaouira, review.

I can certainly recommend Hotel Gallia for its cleanliness and presentation, its good breakfast, appealing salon and terrace, helpful staff and great location. Bookings are months in advance and sadly you have to do it by fax - no email - dont rock up and expect a bed, it won't happen.

Found the booking procedure rather awkward and outdated (not many people use fax). When we got there we thought it was a charming and clean place full of atmosphere. Surprised as to how quiet it was given that it was a few minutes walk from the hustle and bustle of Jemma El Hafna. The staff were very kind and helpful. Our room was ok, though a bit run down. We later discovered that most of the other rooms were much better! The central location is fantastic. Overall, we thought it was fantastic value, though they could give some of the rooms a new coat of paint. The cats were most entertaining!

My partner and our two friends stayed at the Gallia twice during August 2007. At the start of our stay in Morocco and then at the end. Both times we were very sad to leave. We choose Gallia because of the great reviews here and in guide books and it definitely lived up to our expectations and more.
Booking by fax is a bit frustrating (they don't take phone bookings and they don't have e-mail) but it really is worth doing. Try to book several weeks or if possible, months before you want to stay.
The hotel is located just a few minutes walk from Djemma El Fna square, but is tucked away down a side street with two peaceful internal courtyards making it a sanctuary of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the souks. It also has a large roof terrace for relaxing and listening to the sounds of Djemma El Fna in the distance.
The courtyards are full of plants and a huge palm tree. There are also birds and two pet tortoises that wander around, but best of all are the cats that seem to be the VIP guests at the hotel! The owners have several cats that live at the Gallia and are all gorgeous. They are soo friendly and are keen to come in your room if you are happy to let them!
The rooms are all immaculate and air-conditioned. Each one is decorated differently. During our first stay we had rooms over looking one of the courtyards. On our second stay we had rooms on the roof terrace. Number 19 has the most amazing huge tiled bathroom.
Breakfast is included and consists of pastries, bread, jams, tea, coffee, juice etc. Very filling.
This is our second trip to Morocco. We have stayed in many towns and cities, but the Gallia is definitely our favourite place to stay. It is such a lovely unique hotel. The staff are lovely and the cats really do make it feel like home. We were very sad to leave.
