“The best place in Marrakech!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2008

Pierre & Anne from Paris.

Coming back to Jnane Tamsna is always a dream...
We often come to Marrakech and since we know this fantastic place, there is nowhere else to stay!

The place is not a hotel, you feel like in a private house.
It is set in the Palmeraie of Marrakech in beautiful biologic gardens: a lot of palm trees, exotic plants, and vegetables' gardens. Tropical feeling that reminds paintings of Douanier Rousseau!
Beautiful architecture, a lot of space, lovely views, not too Morrocan, a certain feeling of Africa. Very very chic!

The inside decoration is marvellous. A lot of colors, beautiful paintings, flowers and candles everywhere. Beautiful bedrooms, all different and big.
The food is delicious, and so fresh; all the vegetables and herbs from the garden! Meals are served in different sets, garden or courtyards full of flowers, plants and birds!!!

The staff is very welcoming and helpful, (you laundry is done everyday for free).

The owner has created heaven, she has the charisma and the creative willing of Barbara Hendricks! She will explain you the spirit of her place and all her interesting researchs and projects she has with her husband, Gary.

If you come to Marrakech, it is the best place to stay!

How to describe my paradise?

I love the atmosphere, the colors, the smell of Gary's gardens, the amazing decoration created by Meryanne, the delicious cuisine, a mix of traditional oriental food and western taste, the wonderful flowers in the living rooms and bedrooms, the kindness of the employees...

I love resting near the pool, reading a book, smelling jasmine and lavender and listening the wind in the palm trees.

I love my bedroom... the blue Persian one. No the Indian one! No the West African one! Well, all of them are so comfortable and peacefull.

If you look for paradise, you have just found it! It is Jnane, in Marrakech!

We last stayed at Jnane Tamsna in Spring of 2007 and I was delighted to find that the place is as exquisite as ever. The staff were helpful without being 'in your face'; the bedrooms are impeccable and full of original touches (miles away from the tired Orientalist chic peddled elsewhere in Morocco); the proprietress was gracious and welcoming. Their green policy is even more evident - they don't use any pesticides and try to save water by using drip irrigation for their gardens. If you want to escape from the hurly burly (and get some great design ideas) this is definitely the place to do it.

Years ago I went to JNANE TAMSNA and had enjoyed Heaven in Marrakesh and came back many times since, then to riyadhs and hotels , with a strong frustration not to experiment the same congruence . No space in riyadh and this very challenging proximity of wealth and misery, hotels where luxury stands but no soul. Well definitely Marrakesh was no more my place ! May be . .. Just spent a few days there 3 weeks ago and went back to JNANE , unexpectedly with friends who pushed me to come back and wanted to know that place . And the place is greater , more authentic , more subtle even than in my memory . This place has very well matured, became a tradition , a very personal touch within a world of hypes all around . No hypes , but excellent, Excellent food , service , lodging . Not fit for Bling-Bling as the French says ! but for those appreciative of quality , education , contact , beauty . Absolutely true, delicate, comfortable - provided that you belong to this part of humanity who do not travel to bring hysteria and noises wherever they go , but to the other part for who being there is an inclusive , exclusive , respectful trip . In all fairness

  • Liked — Very special and authentic
  • Disliked — Food too good , very temptating!!

A good friend of mine had recommended this place.
After 24 hours, under the pressure of my girlfriend I had to ask if we could extend our stay. Even though we had not been to Marrakech before, we just never felt like leaving.
Every day the staff was setting a beautiful table covered with candles and flowers under a different tree in the garden.
All of our clothes were superbly washed and pressed for free. As we were in a garden suite and that telephone and TV in rooms are not the philosophy of the property, we were lent a mobile phone upon arrival with the list of senior staff members to call.
They organised camels to pick us up so we felt like Lawrence of Arabia, they organised musicians at sunset, we had a delicious cooking class and relaxing massages. The garden is beautiful and totally in the local tradition. Don't expect lawns as if you were in Marbella.. but olive trees, old palm trees, vegetable patches, etc..
Above all what we loved was that it never felt like a hotel.

  • Liked — the peace and space , the kindness of the staff, the general elegant though understated and not stuffy atmosphere
  • Disliked — that I waited until being 40 yrs old to discover it !!

In April our family of four, including a year old baby went on a holiday to a beautiful main building and enjoyed some simple but really tasty food. We booked two elegant garden rooms Calligraphy and Casablanca for our ten-day stay, which had a pool, which we shared with another family. We were disappointed that the gardens, where I was looking forward to playing with my children were in fact planted areas with earth and not lawn, so it was not suitable for our child who crawls.

It was on the third night of our ten-day stay that my wife woke up in the middle of the night by an insect that crawled over her face. When she put on the light she could see a huge number of cockroaches that fled back into their cracks and crevices, however she was able to catch one under a glass, which was a good 6 cm long and quite revolting. I moved the child and my wife into our room just for the night but we soon realised that this room too was widely infected. When we put on the light in the bathroom we could see a huge number a cockroaches in there too.

The staff understood the problem and moved us to two rooms that were very nice in the main building. We soon discovered this that these rooms that were some way from the other rooms were also crawling with cockroaches. We showed the captured cockroaches to some staff under a glass and decided to check out immediately especially as they were next to the restaurant and kitchen… Yuck!

I checked online and there is plenty of information about the significant health risk and decease that pose from cockroaches.

I met with the owner the following day to whom I explained the problem and that I was leaving to go home, she very reluctantly agreed to refund only the remainder of my stay. She explained that they don’t like to use insecticides as it is an organic garden and that it wasn’t a hygiene issue. I was surprised and disappointed that the owner did not take the fact that her living bedrooms were suffering a serious infestation for which we had paid for two garden rooms a wapping £500 a night!!

My advice, very pretty place but I wouldn’t stay there.

I had heard about Jnane Tamsna through very diverse circles of friends. Booked five nights and ended up staying 9.

The place is out of this world. The grounds, the gardens, the fresh food with organic vegetables daily picked (under your eyes ), the charming staff, and the style and the interior design… and above all an amazing constant blissful flow of every thing..

Candles at night every where, five pools, sprawling roof terraces, a clay surface tennis court, excellent massage and yoga, interesting cooking classes by their gracious young Moroccan chef, and the absolute kindness of the owners. World travellers, cosmopolitan, curious and cool, they have indeed created a very unique atmosphere there.

Nothing is too much effort for the staff. Your perfectly pressed clothes are put back in your room (free pressing and laundry .. ! ). Meals were served in different spots all the time. The other guests were very very nice. As most were returning they knew all the staff by their names. This is just so different from any hotels I have stayed in. None of this uberdesign "boutique hotel" style, just a beautiful big country house with timeless style in the middle of the most amazing vegetation 20 minutes away from the crowd and energy of the old Medina.

It is so vast that from honeymooners, to families, every one had their own space.

A unique experience. We are planning to come twice a year.
