“Soul Asylum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Just outside business, noisy and colorful Marakesh, you find Jnane Tamsna in Palmeriea.
It is an oasis. a beautiful garden, where Meryanne and her husband, Gary, grow organic herb, spices, vegetable, flower et al. The main house i beautifully decorate with Maroccan antiques and Meryanne own wonderfully designed lamps, mixing mirrors, glass, and local flavor.
There is also bungalows with double rooms in groups 3-5 facing thir own pool (5 pools in total).
You can enjoy all your meals at Jnane Tamsna, the serve local style food using it's own produce. Delicious food served by a courteous staff.
The place is very quite, and the only sound is bird song (nightingale - when in season)

Families with children are welcome and because og the design and size of the place you hardly notice any other guests.
Meryanne and Gary are perfect host and you feel like your are personal guest of theirs.
A home away from home!

I returned to Jnane last week on a last minute solo getaway, and while the hotel was brimming, the very helpful management team found me a last-minute room: it was wonderfully quiet, fresh and relaxing, giving on to the lush garden which was bursting with life after the spring rains. Some of this wondrous bounty was then served up in the freshly harvested (and of course, organic) salads and vegetables we were given at every delicious meal.

While Marrakech is a breathtaking city, it is a bit of a dusty and noisy one too, so I cannot recommend enough coming out to Jnane for those who seek a bit of quiet and contemplation within easy reach of the sights, culture and markets of town. Yet for being quiet and peaceful, Jnane is always full of a wonderful mix of guests - older couples, young couples with children, solo travellers like myself - who get to know each other and hang out like old friends. Some people I met were on their 4th, 5th and even 8th return trip to the hotel!

At the risk of sounding mystical, both times I have been, I have felt that one of the reasons people return to Jnane is because Meryanne and Gary, the lovely owners, have cast some kind of magic spell over the place. Everything is just as it ought to be, the staff are without fail friendly and helpful, the food is always spot on, and the whole experience is one of one's desires being met even before one has fully formulated them...

I recommend booking in advance though, especially at this time of year. I was lucky to be squeezed in, but do not expect that luck to hold when I plan my next Marrakech getaway.

Thank you dear guest for posting such nice comments.. We are happy to read that you are thinking about your third stay with us !
Thank you for being so gracious during school holidays as our gardens and pools were echoing the joyful sounds of so many children happy to be free to run, climb trees, hide and swim the first week of April. I remember that the first time you came was during a yoga retreat and then the only sounds were the birdsongs ! This is what Jnane Tamsna tries to be, welcoming for all types of guests and taking advantage of our 9 acres of grounds and 5 pools for each type of guest to find the space, solitude or company they wish.
We look forward to hosting you soon again

We have just returned from this hotel for a one night stay. I have very mixed feelings about this place:
1. The rooms were very nice, lovely decorated. But dirty. The carpets had not been cleaned and were in a terrible condition, the toilet seat was not fixed to the toilet, one sink did not drain, the other was not connected properly so the water indeed on the floor. Lack of hot water. The copper shower had was clogged up.
2. Lunch and dinner are set menus, no choice. As you are far out of town and depending on the hotel to arrange transport for you (for a higher costs), you are more or less stuck. Lunch is 25€ per person, a glass of house wine 5€. High for what you get.
3. The staff at the restaurant was very pleasant.
4. No locks on the door - there are some reviews that mention locks and keys - we were not offered any and I feel uncomfortable leaving cameras etc in a room that I can not lock.
5. This could be a perfect honeymoon place - if they revamp it and make it worth the money again.
6. Although children are welcome, my children were reminded upon entering the pool to respect the other clients (2 people under a rather broken sun umbrella) - my children are very well behaved and had not made a single sound till then.

To be fair to the hotel, I have not discussed these issues face to face with them, as we we there to celebrate an 80th birthday and I did not want to upset the event.

I would have been more forgiving if the place would not be so expensive. For that amount of money, you can expect more.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for your positive comments and ratings of our rooms and service.
I would like to emphasize that we are family friendly and I am very sorry to read this is not what you experienced. Currently - during this school holiday period - we children are having fun in the garden, doing art workshops, taking magic classes and going out on camel rides. Most of them are from families who have been returning to Jnane during school holidays for years.

Our lunch of 3 courses features fresh products picked the same morning from the garden, and includes soft drinks, tea and coffee. If you return to Morocco, please do contact us so I can offer you a lunch or dinner ... and perhaps a different perspective on what Jnane Tamsna offers.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay here over Easter (2013). Our boys (13 and 8 and hard to please) enjoyed the magic lessons (yes, magic lessons and they actually leaned some cool tricks!) organised by the hotel - in fact the whole hotel was magical! It is an amazing place - just stunning - and the staff are the sweetest people you could ever wish to meet. We have been to many of the top hotels in the world but this one certainly stands out as one of the very best. They obviously genuinely care about every detail. The (rather glamorous) owner comes to your table each night to check that you are happy - very charming. Other highlights: cookery lessons for the kids (which they loved and then ate!) , food served fresh from their huge gardens, real fireplaces in the bedrooms and real fires lit for you at night (on request) good internet throughout the hotel, classic Moroccan architecture and decor - beautiful carved wooden doors and pretty coloured limestone steps and walls - all traditional. Lots of swimming pools dotted round he gardens.... As I say, just a really magical place. A perfect, tranquil retreat and yet a short taxi ride to the main main square - and beautiful weather too :). We have tans.

Room Tip: There are so many good rooms. India, Casa or Persian are all stunning, but actually all the rooms...

We had an amazing 4 nights there! I wouldn't call it a hotel or a resort, it's like being given the keys to an amazing country villa with access to a cook, waiter, driver etc. In fact, we were given a local mobile phone with only those numbers on it. Every piece of furniture/art is hand picked. The gardens are amazing and thriving. We were traveling with our 2 yr old and the grounds were perfect for her to roam around. Be sure to pack light, cause they do laundry everyday -included. It was just an authentic experience. We thought about staying within the Medina, but we were so happy with the tranquility of staying in palmaraie 15-20 minutes outside of town and with small kids I would want to be in the busy market 24/7. If you are looking for a Dior shop in the lobby, go elsewhere.

Great for families. Beautiful grounds, organic food, design, art, amazing. Meryanne and her American husband Gary go out of their way to organize trips, activities, meals. Total luxury. I think Brad Pitt stayed there. Even if you cant afford to stay tvere go for a yummy meal. Do a cooking class or make homemade soap with herbs from their garden. We loved having our own house and pool. The kids loved tve turtle!

My husband and I stayed at Jnane Tamsna for a little less than a week. It is a very romantic and peaceful property, surrounded by vegetable gardens landscaped in a very natural way. The location is beautiful, very quiet yet conveniently close to Marrakech. The service was impeccable and very friendly, the staff accommodated all of our needs at all times and made us feel at home. The owner is a great host who knows how to manage every little detail of her client's stay. Each room has distinct character and is decorated with incredible taste. We loved having lunch al fresco under olive trees, tasting vegetables from the property's garden and drinking mint tea by the fireplace in our room. We look forward to visiting again!
