We stayed at The Riu Tikida Gardens 4-11/7/13.The hotel itself, is typical of North Africa, bit dated, smokey and lots of red velvet, the staff were generally very helpful and cheerful.
The weather was fab, few random thunderstorms late afternoon, but apart from that, blue sky and sunshine all the way through. Not sure it would be a good location for little ones, as it was very very hot.
The food , all inclusive buffet style, plenty of it, and very well presented, became a bit samey after a few days, but no more so, than any other all inclusive that I have been to. Restaurants were very clean. The restaurant staff were lovely and very attentive. We ate in the Moroccan Restaurant one evening, and enjoyed it.
The pool, well, theres just the one, and yes the sunbed/towels on them situation is a bit daft, I got up at 6 am one morning and got down there by 6.15, there were already plenty of towels on sunbeds!... however I didnt hear or see anyone complaining, we always had a sunbed and the pool staff will move them around for you if needs be. Towels are provided at the poolside. I loved the fact that its small, we made some lovely friends, which in a larger complex with several pools, isnt always the case. Only one downside at the pool, there are some loos/showers on one side. They need to be cleaned at least once a day, if you went down there in the afternoon, the stench was enough to knock you out!......
The animation team is very small, they did the best they could with the staff that they had.. I think someone left while we were there?... anyways as I said they did the best they could with the resources they had. African show and " The Best of Shows" were very good.
If there is one overall suggestion I have it would be for the Tikida Garden to make more of the beautiful gardens, and take the entertainment, bars and evening social side of the hotel outside. I didnt want to sit in a smokey bar when It was still warm outside in the evening, I think this might be the reason why so many guests opted for an early night most evenings.
The medina is a must, we went in the evening and it was fantastic!... dont be too worried to go, just be cautious and avoid flashing cash about.. its a fantastic evening out.
One last note about the rep Sam.... Im not sure If he knew anything about Morocco, the Hotel or any of the guests. He called our room one late afternoon and wished us a safe journey later that day, and hoped we had had a pleasant holiday.... I was a bit confused as I wasnt going home that day?.....

Room Tip: Ask for a pool room, and also some have recently been refurbed, with new aircon units etc,

We arrived at the airport to be told we needed to fill in a form asking for occupation, name, passport no. etc. Hadn't been told this was needed and no pens provided so this caused alot of people delays. Once we filled in the form we faced HUGE queues at passport control where when you finally got to the guy at the desk, he went through your form and filled it all in again anyway! The money exchange at the airport was PAINFULLY slow, wait until you get to the hotel as they have a desk there where you can buy the currency (just be aware they can't buy it back, you can only do that at the airport, again ridiculously slow).
When we got to the hotel we were greeted with a nice drink...and presented with ANOTHER form to fill in, all the same details as last time before check in. Some people were allowed to complete these at the desk and check in, others (like us) were told to get out of the queue, fill them in, and join the queue again after. Bit of consisitency needed here. Once we checked in we headed straight for where we could hear the music, the Bar Salon. The music sounded good but we were surprised to see only a few people down there, as we had entered at about 11.30pm and it shut at 12, we thought it was just people who had turned in for the evening. Not the case, after every show that was held in the bar salon, people just dissapeared! No idea where they went as no bars or clubs outside the hotel (although when we booked we did specify that we wanted that) and no-one in the Zanzibar as people couldn't bear to hear the guy on his organ/keyboard thing hit anymore bum notes. The Africa show I really would recommend seeing it's on tuesday nights and was a great show. As was Mr Riu, which if all the contestants were drunk, which they were on our night, made for a quite entertaining evening. Even if the wrong guy won! The music in the bar salon was quite outdated, especially on the karaoke night the most recent song on the list was mambo number 5.

The room- well the air con wasn't cold in ours and only blew ever so slightly, the drains smelled like sewage and rotten eggs even if only ran for a second.. to the point I was having to brush my teeth outside the bathroom to stop myself from being sick! On the first night our toilet wouldn't flush as the systern didn't fill up, we ended up having to fill one of the bins with water so that we could flush the toilet! We turned it off at the stop and told reception and they said they'd have someone check, we went back later and turned the stop on again and it worked ok after that, so don't know whether anyone even came to look. Our fridge was pointless, we checked a number of times that it was one but it just wouldn't get cold, not great for the 45 degree weather we had during our stay. My partner also woke up one night to go to the bathroom and was greeted by a huge cockroach as he turned on the toilet light, it eventually ran out of the room when he turned all the lights on but another one was in our bathroom a few nights later and we had to squish him. (cleaners didn't get the cockroach blood off the tiles) Even with the aircon not working very well in our room, the unit that was above the door decided to leak leaving a huge puddle right by the door, again the bin was our saviour as was half full in 10mins! We told reception and they did get this fixed while we were at dinner, whilst doing so they must have noticed that our aircon wasn't good so they left an extra room key in the slot so that it would stay on when we wern't in the room. This made our time in the room more bearable. We also found chewing gum stuck to the headboard on our bed.

Sam the rep- About as much use as a chocolate teapot. We've only ever been on holidays with thompson and could never fault the reps, always helpful but not Sam in Morocco. In our welcome meeting he didn't even seem to know which slides were next as they seemed to keep surprising him. He also didn't tell us that Ramadan was starting during our stay.... this left everybody confused when the shop, restaurant and shuttle bus to the new town times changed! Even the timetables for the shuttle bus given out by reception didn't mention that during ramadan the last shuttle was at 4.30 not 6 as on the timetable. This caused problems for a family i heard had been waiting for the 6 o'clock bus. They wanted to go to the sky bar... I wonder if they got there, cause we never did.....

We asked him one morning before getting the shuttle bus to the new town, where we should go, we wanted to visit the sky bar at the top of the renaisance(?) hotel and told him this, we also asked if there was anywhere else he recommended, he said to 'just go up and down the road, theres loads of shops and bars and restaurants, there's also level 5 thats a rooftop bar' Okay, easy enough we thought. Well the shuttle bus dropped us off and we were immediately hassled by a taxi driver trying to get us to go with him to the old town saying we didn't want to be there. After getting rid of him we saw it wasn't just one road as Sam had suggested, but instead you had a choice of several directions. He hadn't given us any directions or indications of where the sjy bar was so we wandered around aimlessly and then went to McDonalds to decide what to do. We found Level 5, as this was right behind you when you got off the bus, however it was Sunday and they were shut, as were alot of the shops. Sam never said this could be the case. We wandered around a little more and decided to get a taxi back to the hotel as we couldn't wait for the shuttle bus to pick us up as it wasn't for 3 hours. We got in a taxi with a driver who said he knew the hotel.... then drove straight past it, we told him that was our hotel and he kept driving, as we didn't know the road law we just assumed he was waiting for a place to turn, but when we went stright at the next roundabout and he started saying it wasn't 100Dh anymore it was 200, 300, 400. We started to panic a little, I kept it light with the taxi driver joking with him saying 'No, you said it was 100 we pay 100' and he laughed it off, meanwhile my partner was memorising where to go if we needed to walk back! I asked if he was turning round and he asked why, and we said to take us to the hotel, he took us to the wrong Riu hotel. So he turned around and took us back to ours and was very good about it so we gave him an extra 50dh on top of the original 100 as he didn't ask for anything more, if he'd asked we wouldn't have!

Finally the trip home, well, the transfer picked us up at 7.15, and we arrived at the airport to check in, the desks didn't open and wouldn't move for ages! My partner went to exchange our money back but they had no coins so we ended up still with 50dh we couldn't do anything with. We saw on the screen that check in closed at 8.45, we just checked in before this as the queue didn't move for the first half an hour of us being there! we then saw that we were boarding at 8.55! No time to get something to eat, wouldn't have been time to exchange money back if we hadn't of had one of us in each queue, no time for duty free. We also had another agonising wait at passport control where we filled out that form for the 3rd time! and again had it all filled in again when we got to the desk. I'd adivse arranging a private transfer for the way back to the aiport, or getting a taxi because then at least you'll have time to get everything done.

Overall the holiday was relaxing as we spent everyday in the sun by the pool, but other than that, I really wouldn't recommend it here at all.

We visited 1st July - 12th July this was my first all inclusive holiday.

In my opinion if you are going to visit Marrakech for anything more than a couple of days, then I would certainly opt for a hotel base such as this. The city is so thick with culture and whilst the chaos is thrilling and exciting, it is also wonderful to escape the dusty hot adventure - to the sanctuary of the big turquoise pool and lush spacious gardens and the peace. I think you could only get that from one of the Riu's on circuit de palmeraie (if you google mapped them, you'll see why).

The hotel is beautiful, the gardens are stunning and the rooms are lovely (we had one of the 400's). The air conditioning was excellent in our block. We had no issues with the food, it was plentiful and delicious.

The staff are very friendly and kind, however the only area where we felt let down were the two main bars. To be honest the bar tenders came across surly, even aggrieved to be working the bar, and the alcoholic measures were just FAR too small. Perhaps we are overlooking the fact that our hosts are Islamic and of course abstinent, but it couldn't go unnoticed.

I sincerely recommend a 2 day excursion to the Sahara desert for camping in berber tents and camel rides, it really added an extra cultural experience and rounded the trip off beautifully.

Everything in Rosie's review a few reviews down is exactly what we thought when we stayed there in feb

But wait for this....it was the holiday rep's first day and he didn't even know what the currency was called,didn't have a clue about any attractions,where to find a taxi etc.

Food was the same poor quality rubbish day in day out,total waste of our money,staff smoking at the back of the food counter,it was like something out of the 1970's

I wrote to Thomas cook by recorded mail 5 months ago,the signed for the letter and when I followed it up with a phone call there reaction was TUFF not our problem

A couple of hints before I start - When walking outside of the airport a casually dressed guy will walk up to you and say "First Choice, Thompson?" and take your bags off you and say, "this way to your coach.." He'll brazenly walk past the uniformed Rep (while the rep points at the coach) and put your luggage onto the coach. He'll then wip out a fiver and say, "match this tip, I take Sterling." I understand the guy trying to earn some money but just annoying that the rep's let all the guys do this continuously.
Also, even though all over the welcome papers the hotel give you, don't worry about wearing trousers to dinner!
Ok, so the hotel itself is nice and the staff always have a smile on their face. The swimming pool and grounds are very well maintained which is where we spent the daytime. Not a cloud in the sky and plenty of heat in the air.
The room was basic but very clean!
Food was varied but pretty bland. Obviously no seasoning was used.
The evening bars were a bit weird, dated decoration - but they served the drinks so we couldn't not go there! Plates of olives to help yourselves to. The Keyboard player reminded us off of Ross on 'Friends' - we were waiting for the helicopter noises!
Bottled water was kept at the reception to help yourself.
Jemaa El Fna was an experience! We took the last shuttle bus of the day which left the hotel at 18:00. Drops you off at the new town and we walked down to the old town market (Jemaa El Fna) which takes about 15 or 20 mins. We wished we took a horse and cart. Watching the smug people on them trot past while we walked in the sun made us a bit jealous!
I would recommend this hotel - pleasant enough and good staff.

Having just arrived back from a week long holiday at the Riu Tikida Garden and felt the need to review.

On arrival to the hotel we were greeted with a welcome drink and a quick check in. Our luggage was then taken to our room (however they chalked on the room number to he suitcase) and we followed.

The food was variable from day to day. Always fresh salad and fresh fruit. Great options for meat eaters and vegetarians. We booked an evening at the Moroccan restaurant on the grounds. The restaurant had a great authentic ambience and the service was excellent. The traditional Moroccan cuisine was beautiful so we just had to book another evening.

The pool was a good size, and there was plenty of sun loungers, however you do have to get up extra early to lay down towels.

The staff are very helpful and approachable. You can collect bottled water from reception 24/7 and exchange currency also.

The only downside to the holiday was the evening entertainment. The entertainment program was not clearly displayed anywhere, and was very hit and miss.

Overall a fantastic holiday.

Took a hotel private transfer via first choice booking for £11 each and well worth it as the coach turned up a good 45 mins later. Only 20mins transfer from the airport. Hotel very pretty, rooms suffice as we don't stay in them much, just to shower for the evening and sleep but very clean air con ok. Food is to a high standard and lots of variety. Make sure to try the tagines. The morrocan restaurant is a lovely setting and we celebrated a birthday and the hotel made it extra special by offering a free bottle of champagne and a personalised cake for dessert. Pool adequate for size of hotel and most people put towels on sunbeds around 7:30am. But you can always find a bed somewhere. My main plus for this hotel is the guests, we were a group of five 30 something ladies and we met some great people who will remain friends through the powers of facebook. Not much to do local outside the hotel but worth a visit to Mohammed' s shop to the right outside the hotel or turn left and have a walk through the local streets taking in the culture and ways of life as a Moroccan. Booked a half day tour with Abdul from tripadvisor review and had an excellent time (review is on his tripadvisor page). A must is to go into the medina and souks at night. Wanted to try the local delicacy of Snail Soup but was too much of a wuss!!!!! Weather was brilliant and overall a fab holiday. My only negative would be the entertainment team in the hotel, they really didn't try with the evening entertainment and we're pretty scarce in the day which is a shame as we have always enjoyed the entertainment team and got a lot of local knowledge from them, these guys need a lesson in customer and hotel hospitality as a smile is just not good enough. Definitely recommend this hotel if you can make your own evening entertainment like we did.

Room Tip: Everything closes at 12pm so any room should be ok.
