While staying at the ali it was clear that a major renovation was going on, so the roof terrace and 1st floor public area were all covered in building materials. Some of the people in my group had renovated rooms although they didn't appear to be completely finished. Mine wasn't but was clean and functional. Breakfast was bread rolls boiled eggs coffee and mint tea although a black tea bag was found on request. The view from the terrace was fabulous as was the location, close to the main square and with a currency exchange next door. Staff spoke good English.

Hotel Ali represents excellent value for money in the heart of Marrakech. Rooms are clean and come with en-suite facilities, including soap and towels. Breakfast is basic but adequate. Views from the roof-top are first class. There are dozens of restaurants within a few minutes walk as is the post office. FX facilities - offering some of the best rates in town - are in the foyers (back and front). Most of the tourist attractions are within walking distance and you'll get a taxi outside the door to those that aren't.

Room Tip: Check to see if you get a better price by booking directly with the hotel!

The Hotel Ali is what might euphemistically be termed 'a character hotel', and a 'character builder' of all those who dwell within!

The surprising number of returnees suggests that the Ali does, in fact, 'grow' on many people after a while.

This place struck me as a hybrid between the old Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong and the Hotel Sultan (Sirkeci) in Istanbul. No matter a good review, a bad review or no review at all, this place will always have a core clientele because of its location and its room rates.

I based myself out of the Hotel Ali for about 2 1/2 months, ending March 12th.

So what about this place?

Let's consider the negatives first:
1. Breakfast was mediocre at best. (Coffee in a glass has never been very appealing to
me.)
2. The breakfast room was often so dark, I felt as though I needed a white cane to get around much of the time.
3. The area adjacent to the breakfast room had the strongest - and most reliable - WiFi signal in the hotel.

However, because that area also functioned as - among other things - a mosque, laptop/iPod users were routinely edged out during prayer times by the hordes of men all vying for a place on the prayer mats that had just been put down.

The 'lounge' on the second floor (or first floor if you're British) did have a WiFi signal, but it was much weaker than the one downstairs.

In any case, that area wasn't very comfortable because during the day, the housekeeping staff used it to sort out heaps of dirty sheets, pillow cases and towels, and in the evening it was too dimly lit.

And when it rained, the main area, including the furniture, became drenched by the rain coming down through the openings in the skylight.

Interior rooms were more likely to have a WiFi signal than were exterior rooms.

4. Beware the cranky old geezer who is in charge of the left luggage room. Even though I didn't know for sure how many days I'd be away on my first excursion (7, 10, or 14), this irascible old codger had his hand out for prepayment before my bag even hit the luggage room floor.

So if I'd prepaid for 14 days and returned after only 10, was he going to give me a refund? And if I prepaid for any days at all, would he give me a receipt? Answer: 'No!'

Only through the intervention of the front desk staff did he finally agree, albeit begrudgingly, to accept payment when I returned.

Common sense doesn't seem to come into play here. The left luggage acts as its own collateral, so no one is likely to 'skip out' on payment.

His subsequent 'mellowing' by the time of my second excursion did nothing to offset my first impression of him.

5. Ambience
Somehow Grand Central Station comes to mind, particularly during the day. Dozens of labourers hauling sacks of drywall up the stairs, the hammering and drilling of ongoing renovations, the dragging of iron furniture across tiled surfaces and the constant interruptions by housekeeping staff all contributed to the Grand Central Station atmosphere.

Now onto the positives:
1. Staff
I really liked all the staff at the Ali!
Front-desk staff: Nordeen, Amena and Maryem made a very good-natured trio, being both friendly and accommodating. Maryem in particular - very efficient and extremely helpful! Other staff, including the housekeeping staff and the guys padding around in a dark breakfast room in the morning, were also all very nice.
2. Room was clean and tidy; always had plenty of hot water and, of course, the price was right.
3. Surprisingly, the place was very quiet at night - always got a good night's sleep.
4. Location was ideal: just a few steps away from Jaama el Fna, airport bus, city buses, banks, cafés, etc. The Ali has its own currency exchange booth, which was very convenient.
5. Notwithstanding the bad attitude of the old geezer in charge, the Ali's left luggage facility was very convenient and quite reasonably priced at 5 dirhams/bag/day.

As an aside, anyone planning on staying at the Ali during the winter months should bring warm clothing, as it's an unheated hotel and can get very cold indeed.

Would I ever return to the Ali? I guess the question should really be: would I ever return to Marrakech?

Marrakech has some truly beautiful parks and stunning Islamic architecture.

However, the hideous traffic situation and the grasping, greedy, belligerent and aggressive nature of the ubiquitous touts, taxi drivers and beggar brigades has left me never wanting to set eyes on the city again.

I visited this hotel last week after 3 years and they recognised me then asked after my son ! there is an army of cleaners who work relentlessly to keep the place proper clean. The location is great for getting away from the square as well as experiencing the square.
Not sure i thought there had been an upgrade of any description but there is WIFI and a solid breakfast-shame the evening meal stopped as in my experience the food on the square is pretty much vile and inedible. Not the sort of hotel you can have a holiday in but definitely from

Room Tip: front of the building is better for people watching back for quieter rooms

I stayed at this hotel a few years ago, but only recently joined TripAdvisor. But, I had to write a review about this hotel and their poor food hygiene. I was served a raw egg omelet for breakfast which I forwent. But at the dinner time served beautifully on the roof, the food was less than recognizable and of poor taste and quality. Sad for being in the middle of a worldwide tourist attraction with amazing food available in the medina. Needless to say, I ended up getting compilabacta food poisoning from the hotels poor food hygiene. This is one of the worst types of food poisoning which put me in bed for two weeks with kidney failure as well as periods of unconsciousness. I hate to be over dramatic, and I rarely am - read my other posts! But this place, was horrendous! Save yourselves being out of work for two weeks, and spend a little more money going to a slightly better quality hotel!

I spent 3 nights at this hotel as part of a tour of Morocco (the hotel was not my choice). The first room I was in was really poor, lights hanging out of the ceiling, shower didn't work and the toilet leaked. However the second and third nights were in a different room and it was much better, of a standard I'd expect in a budget hotel. The breakfast isn't great - camp syrup coffee, sweetened orange juice, nasty baked goods, but staff were friendly and helpful. Apparently it's being renovated very slowly hence the difference between rooms so ask for a renovated one and you'll probably be ok but I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than location which is overlooking the main square.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated one to get functional showers!

Stayed at Hotel Ali for 1 night before and 1 night after an Atlas Mountain trek. I guess if it had been really bad we wouldn't have gone back there after the trek! My single room on 1st stay had 3 beds in it which I never really worked out why and second time I had a double bed so always plenty of room. Bathroom and toilet were clean and always had plenty of hot water. Breakfast was basic but edible and the bureau de change had much better rates than the airport. The major plus with this hotel is the location. Very easy to find with great access to the main square and souks. I recommend Hotel Ali but bear in mind it is basic and more suited for backpackers / people on a budget.
