“Great Stuff..........”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2011

Just returned from this hotel and would like to say that its was absolutely great value for money. Only stayed for a 4 night break but a fab getaway just before xmas, and a real contrast to any usual short city break.
Some other reviews on this hotel are scary and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I have stayed in some really top class hotels and even though this is definately not a five star, i would probably say more of 3 to lower 4 star, its worth a visit. A very relaxing atmosphere and very hospitable staff and people for the price we paid it was brilliant,
The food was very good, with lots of choice and variation. We were half board and were given the option to take lunch or dinner, so we could work it around our day without losing a meal. All self service with as many visits as you wished.
Standards of cleanliness was very good with staff continuely cleaning throughout hotel.
Very strict on consumption of own food and alcohol, but as long as you are discreet its not a problem.
Would definately go back and would say give it a try to anyone who wants a good value hotel with good facilities.

Room Tip: We had a pool view which was very nice and reasonably quiet.

I recently stayed here from 4-8th December 2011 on half-board. I would never go back here an would not recommend anyone to come here.

The hotel does look ok and a reasonable standard but no way is a 5 star...seems more like at 3 star standard. The rooms were a good size and spacey, not the best but ok. The hotel restaurant was disgraceful and unhygienic... the first day we went there were birds flying around the restaurant and even eating the bread and perching on the other food left out in this open. This really put me off the food. Also the place had a bad gone off smell. The staff didn't really care about the birds being around the food. This was also same on the other days.

Do not use the hotel spa... they over charge british prices or more and do not even do a good job.If you want a proper spa experience in Marreskh I would recommend to use on of the recommended spas out of the hotel. Do you research before you go. They over charged us for our treatment of a message which was just a gentle brush on the skin. We later heard that one of the french speaking guests was able to get a deal less than half the price as he spoke their language?! This is discrimination.

The last day we stayed, we were told as half-board we were told by staff we could eat the food and when asked they said don't worry about paying. Following completion of the meal, we were then asked to pay for the meals. I am sorry but this is disgusting and disceiptful and completely killed our trip. We were asked to pay 200 DH (eq to £16) each for the lunch buffet which was meant to be included. They never made us aware of these charges and when refusing to pay, they charged they threated to place the charge to the credit card placed to our rooms. They are scammers!!! They did the same thing to the rest of the guests.

Please do not stay at this hotel if you want to be scammed and treated like nothing!! They treat all tourists like fools and are money hungry!! Don't even trust the hotel reps in the hotel,... they are all the same... money hungry scammers!!

Despite the staff's best efforts to offer a half decent service this spa falls way short of an acceptable service. We paid £45 each for a Hamman package which included massage and a hamman body scrub and steam. The steam room wasnt prepared which meant I was standing starkers in a room watched by my husband - in a cold tiled room - with freezing water being chucked over me (though he enjoyed this). It was both humiliating and freezing! I was so cold I had to sit in the sauna instead of the relaxing room which was about as warm and welcoming as Waterloo Concourse (doors open and freezing cold). I know its December but surely the staff knew it wasnt going to be warm? The only reason I havent left a terrible mark against the spa is that the massage was quite decent - except again it was so cold I literally lay shivering during the hour massage. Check two things - that the heating is working and that you dont have a free hamman included in your package before you pay (as we did). Also try not to pay until after the treatment you choose as I also had my hair blow dried which was the most painful and unpleasant blow dry of my life (I got a 70's throwback style - a headful of Elnett and burnt twice and hit in the side of the head with the hairdryer!)

Room Tip: Choose a room not on ground floor or by childrens pool if you dont have children Ask for one not fa...

Stayed 23rd-27th Nov 2011
Liked- Got recently refurbished rooms, in building away from reception building, short walk across pool area. Rooms cleaned every day, towels and toiletries provided every day.
Had 2 double beds for 2 of us! Ideal for family of 4 but beware if not comfortable in sharing beds as hotel not able to provide single adult beds.
Breakfast Buffet- fab choice of hot and cold choices.
It is a 30 min walk from Place El Jemna or Dh40 taxi to Square. You have to use Grand Taxi if more than 3 in-group.
Paid Dh450 for nice Haman, peel and hour massage in around Main Square; there are plenty to choose from, Hotel willing to price match but heard bad reviews from other customers.
Many café/restaurants for food (sharwma @ Dh30, Tagines @ Dh40) in street leading up to Main Square.
An hour drive by taxi to Atlas Mountain via various villages paid Dh500 for 5 people via Grand taxi.

Didn’t like-Weather drops in the evening, so wrap up. No entertainment at the Hotel as off-season.
Dinner buffet not authentic tagines but mild Mediterranean food, should have gone B&B.

Stayed for a week in the hotel, half board, third floor in the old Royal Mirage part of the hotel. We were wowed at first by the grand lobbies, chandeliers and ornate ceilings, but look a little closer and many of the bulbs are gone, there's cracks in the walls... and then there's the stark contrast of the rooms.
The staff have hoovers, I have seen them, but this does not translate to them using them on rugs in the rooms or under the beds, nor adequately cleaning the tiled floors in the rooms. The balcony door did not lock nor did the light on the balcony work, the safe did not work despite the instructions provided, the curtains were broken and the seals and grouting in the bathroom were in desperate need of redoing (mouldy and holey).
On the positive side, there was a working hairdryer in the bathroom, the water was hot and plentiful (but not drinkable - bottled water all the way) they gave us clean towels everyday and the bed linen was clean and the large beds comfortable. There was even a fridge, but it was extremely noisy and sounded like something out of a horror movie, so the plug got pulled on that one.
The food was unremarkable, tasted old at times, no drinks included in the evening meal, and some would find the local invasion of small birds in the restaurant either adorable or less than hygenic, but the food was edible. The restaurant staff are in desperate need of training in hospitality services - they don't smile and can only manage a stale "bon appetit" at the best of times.
Overall I'd recommend it as a budget hotel, but the 5 star rating is an indicator only of the services which they provide, one of which was the spa that we also visited, where non-english speaking girls gave us a massage but did have a disconcerting fit of giggling while talking in a mix of arabic and french about what we hoped was not comments about their two ladies on the tables. The free hammam was nice and relaxing afterwards, but for goodness sake take a swimming costume and let them let you put it on as you'll walk in, otherwise, into the steam room and find yourself with a group of other brits in their cossies, and you're in the buff! One embarrassment too much :-)
For a night out I'd recommend La Comptoire, a 5-10 min walk away from the hotel, with belly dancing at 10.30... Get a table for 8-8.30 in this awesome, stylish place where they know how to wait on you, spoil you with extra nibbles of food, and just soak up the beautiful decor. It's about £50 a head for starter, main and a cocktail. A seedier atmosphere descends about midnight which is probably cue for most people to leave. Definitely worth a visit :-) Easily reached by taxi for a max of 30 dirhams if you don't want to risk looking for it on foot (haggle and agree prices for taxis beforehand!)
Final tip is - enjoy walking around the medina, but WAIT with buying stuff until you've visited local supermarkets (there's one west of the lovely oasis-like calm of the Majorelle Gardens on the same road) which sells the same, usually better quality, little teapots for 70dirhams. You will be approached, haggled, hustled, led astray and told places are "closed" when they are not in order for someone to try and get you into their shop, but stick to the beaten path tourist-wise and you should stay safe.

We stayed at the hotel 4-8 Dec 11. On arrival we were given a room on 6th floor - the 2 beds had hairs on top & underneath the quilt. Reported it to reception who then allocated a room on the 5th floor, only to find the same thing as well as a shower curtain with missing loops & a rug full of dirt. Bk to reception again to be given a room on 4th floor facing the atlas mountains - lovely view, but same filthy conditions + broken tiles. Bk to reception for the 4th time who refused to give an upgrade as we were on a supplement. spoke to manager who allocated a deluxe room - flatscreen TV, however on checking the beds with the manager and hospitality manager we found pubic hair in 1 of the beds. The room was cleaned from top to toe. We were exhausted so took this room - 4 rooms later and 2.5hrs later. Dinner that evening cold plates in cold restaurant - we ate our food in our coats. There was not a grain of couscous in sight during our time spent there. Wild birds flew in at breakfast time & were given better treatment than us paying customers. The rep for the travel Co. was more interested in selling us excursions than listening to our problems. Would never stay here again even if you paid me, would prefer to sleep in the park across the road!!!

As others have said, not a 5 star, but who needs it? Excellent value for money (another Travelzoo package traveller). Some comments (also relating to other reviews):
1. Staff are friendly and helpful. No they don't all speak English well, but this is an old French colony, not English. Communication was never a problem.
2. Room and hotel generally was clean and tidy.
3. We were half board and the food was quite reasonable. Not haute cuisine, but OK
4. You have to pay for water at dinner (about £2.00 a large bottle) which is a little annoying, but this was a cheap holiday to start with
5. Price of beer was outrageous (although wine price OK), but drinking in a hotel in a muslim country will never be cheap (there is a small shop around the back of the hotel where you can buy alcohol apparently - we found out too late)
