We were originally scheduled to go to the Aqua Fun Club and it was with trepidation - and the fact that Ryan Air and the travel agents confirmed we would lose money if we didnt take the option of the Albatros Club. So we arrived having been assured by Nadiya, one of the Directors, being offered a superior room and having enjoyed a swift and free transfer offered by the hotel.
Receptionists are helpful, despite the poor reviews but they are much more accustomed to conversing in French.... That is not a criticism its just amazing that Brits always feel they should be understood immediately as of right. It did stretch my O level French but so what!
We had a lovely room in Al Riad, part of the All inclusive package and overlooking the pool. Yes, agreed it was a bit noisy with music and the enthusiastic annimateurs who encouraged gym, bingo, petanque etc... which we didnt subscribe to cos it was too hot! But the music did not continue until late into the night so it was hardly a case of staying on top of a nightclub.
The pool was cleaned from early in the morning and I can only say, having been in it - it was spotless and safe.
The downside to the pool experience is in lazy and greedy tourists who reserved the limited sunbeds and buzzed off into town - I think there has been a couple of reviews to that effect... and if you are the culprit who came back to find your blue towels and magazines missing - it was me who shifted them.. after 4 hours of waiting - I noticed this again the next morning when white towels saved two seats. By then others had noticed - I have no qualms in shifting towels it is so selfish... I have written to one of the directors to ask them to put in place sanctions against this - different if youre off to have some lunch or snack but more than one hour absence is downright selfish. Being so far from the coast, the pool is a vital part of the holiday and to be honest other tourists doing this put more of a dampener to the holiday than anything else.
We did not experience being turned away from the other pool whilst we were sunbathing or using it but we knew that the pool bars and asiatic/mediterranean restaurants around that pool were for paying guests... so as long as you paid, you could use them. The moroccan tajine was a lovely experience and excellent food... very rich though for delicate tums!
I think the hotel is only newly accommodating the all inclusive and so it has some things to learn. The Columbus bar did run out of things and yes, two men were usually loitering around the till whilst a very nice and very busy woman did all the work... but she was very good, despite my pidgeon French and her limited English. In Le Charlot, the other all inclusive bar, there were mixed abilities for communicating in English and it was funny to some extent to see what you ended up with but what you did get was branded soft drinks and mixers and good quality spirits and beer so although there may be a wait, it was worth waiting for.
the brasserie where all inclusive guests ate had a good hot selection, always two fish and two meat dishes, usually two rice and sometimes mashed potato and always one or two vegetable and/or pasta. It was difficult to know what was on the hotplate and I mentioned this to the chef one lunchtime and by the next day. There were little plastic and clearly written signs in place. The drinks - rose and red wine - to be recommended - were available as well as three juices, coffee and tea as well as soft drinks and water. The bread rolls did get a bit dry by the evening but there was always a good selection of other choices, croissants etc. So, as far as we were concerned, the food was fine and supplemented well by the pasta, pizza, chips and burgers at snack times and in the evening offered a relaxed alternative. fabulous omelettes and galette in the morning too!
The rooms were cleaned every day. The quality of our room was very good, probably a good 4 star, spotlessly clean and lovely idea of fruit and petit fours on arrival... rose petals on the bed on our last day.
I hope people remembered that it is customary to tip the housekeeper and we tipped also people who had been helpful to us during the stay. Our moroccan lady was really nice, friendly and helpful - in French.
so all in all, we enjoyed our stay, walking into the medina a couple of times was a good experience, I would prefer to be closer to the coast to take advantage of beachwalking and so this has been a different experience but worthwhile.
I would advise though that if you are very particular about your holiday and always want to speak and be understood in English - then you need to think about what that costs - this was a very good value option. we paid under £700 for two of us all inclusive for a week. I cannot complain about anything about the hotel on that basis.
