First visit to Morocco, first visit in Marrakech and what a lovely surprise to find such a good service, great room and great swimmingpools, especially the heated one.
Since I travel a lot I always try to avoid the restaurants in hotels, but we arrived late so we had to eat in the hotel. Nice terrace with good food and good service. I certainly would recommend this hotel and would love to go back.

Very good hotel, very confortable large rooms, king size beds, modern and clean. Beautiful view on the Atlas. Quiet.
Friendly service.
Good breakfast on the terrace.
For lunch and dinner, restaurants are not as attractive as the housing.

We spent three nights at the hotel during the half term holiday. we found the hotel to be lovely the decor was absolutely fantastic and the staff were always polite and helpful. Before I arrived I was a little apprehensive as I had read some critical reviews about the hotel.
But we were pleasantly surprised as soon as arrived at the hotel we received 5star treatment from the start to the end of our stay. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and well maintained and there were many parts to explore.
I have to state that the food was quite expensive so we only had breakfast and a meal by the poolside. However what a spread the breakfast buffet was, they had everything under the sun laid out and you were spoilt for choice.
Overall it was lovely stay and I would definetely stay there again.

I stayed in the Sofitel in January 2009 as part of a business trip. First impressions were excellent. Staff were really helpful and the public areas of the hotel were fantastic, really fresh and clean, and they managed to mix the open plan with the feeling of comfort and intimacy.
The Orangerie bar was pleasent too, a little overcrowded when busy, but a nice ambience.
I only ate breakfast in the hotel and this was a disappointing experience. Talking with others there, we clearly chose an unfortunate time (8.30am Friday), because my experience was by no means universal, but after being seated at an uncleared table, asking for coffee and cutlery 3 times, I gave up and got my own (cutlery - the coffee had to wait...). The next day I went for a simple room service breakfast, which was great, but took the best part of an hour to arrive.
The room was short of what I'd been expecting too. The size was fine, and the bed comfortable, and it was nice to have a balcony, but little things let it down, namely the shower leaked horribly when used, the furniture wasn't that great, so the tv cabinet didn't close, and drawers wouldn't shut properly. Also the tv remote didn't work until we asked for it to be changed. It was clean and cleaned really well though.
Overall, I'd say it's a very good hotel if you get a very good rate, and was let down by some easy-to-fix irritations only. It's a 3 rating based on higher expectations.

Dec 17, 2008 | Trip type: Couples

Visited Marrakech for 4 days at the very beginning of November and spent 2 nights at a riad in the medina and 2 nights at the SMI. It was a plesant change from the medina environment to a westernized one. The hotel itself is beatiful, gardens, fountains, just about everything. The neighborhood was also very nice and safe. Check-in was somewhat different but that was the Moroccan charm, incense continuously burning, was enjoyed at the beginning of the stay, but it becomes tiring after the first day. Deluxe king room was very confortable with a balcony overlooking the medina, pool and mountains. Perfect spot to enjoy some wine and watch the sunset. Be aware, they speak very little English, except for the front desk and waiting staff and it was quite limited at that. If you speak french or arabic shouldn't be a problem. Most of the guests during the time we were there were french-speaking. Be also aware that only very few places sell bottles of wine to take-out, (besides hotels of course, at exorbitant prices), and they're located very far from the hotel. We got ours from a small hotel restaurant near the hotel, from their regular wine list at a reasonable price . By the way, Moroccan wine is very good. Unfortunely, we got sick upon checking-in (food at the riad where we were before was a little too rich for us), so couldn't enjoy everything that was offered, including the restaurants, but room service was very efficient. Breakfast was excellent, with lots of choices of cold and hot foods and included in the price of the room, or at least ours was. Be also aware that if you chose one of the rates offered at their web site, they break down the bill by each service provided, but the total is the same as advertised in the web site. Service was generally good, only one incident at the pool bar, where the woman head waitress yelled at some employees, including our waiter because he didn't get my name printed, but my signature. He had asked me to sign the check since I was going to charge it to the room. Very unpleasant person. Since we were celebrating a special anniversary, a bouquet of roses was delivered to the room, at least 30+ roses in a beatiful arrangement from the hotel manager. Nice touch and very much appreciated. My wife was very sad to leave them behing when we left. In addition, snacks i.e. olives, fruits, and pastries were also delivered to the room. I don't know, but if there were issues with service before according to previous reviews, they have been resolved since, or we were very lucky. Either way, we really enjoyed our stay at the SMI, even though we were a little under the weather.
