Visited Marrakech for 4 days at the very beginning of November and spent 2 nights at a riad in the medina and 2 nights at the SMI. It was a plesant change from the medina environment to a westernized one. The hotel itself is beatiful, gardens, fountains, just about everything. The neighborhood was also very nice and safe. Check-in was somewhat different but that was the Moroccan charm, incense continuously burning, was enjoyed at the beginning of the stay, but it becomes tiring after the first day. Deluxe king room was very confortable with a balcony overlooking the medina, pool and mountains. Perfect spot to enjoy some wine and watch the sunset. Be aware, they speak very little English, except for the front desk and waiting staff and it was quite limited at that. If you speak french or arabic shouldn't be a problem. Most of the guests during the time we were there were french-speaking. Be also aware that only very few places sell bottles of wine to take-out, (besides hotels of course, at exorbitant prices), and they're located very far from the hotel. We got ours from a small hotel restaurant near the hotel, from their regular wine list at a reasonable price . By the way, Moroccan wine is very good. Unfortunely, we got sick upon checking-in (food at the riad where we were before was a little too rich for us), so couldn't enjoy everything that was offered, including the restaurants, but room service was very efficient. Breakfast was excellent, with lots of choices of cold and hot foods and included in the price of the room, or at least ours was. Be also aware that if you chose one of the rates offered at their web site, they break down the bill by each service provided, but the total is the same as advertised in the web site. Service was generally good, only one incident at the pool bar, where the woman head waitress yelled at some employees, including our waiter because he didn't get my name printed, but my signature. He had asked me to sign the check since I was going to charge it to the room. Very unpleasant person. Since we were celebrating a special anniversary, a bouquet of roses was delivered to the room, at least 30+ roses in a beatiful arrangement from the hotel manager. Nice touch and very much appreciated. My wife was very sad to leave them behing when we left. In addition, snacks i.e. olives, fruits, and pastries were also delivered to the room. I don't know, but if there were issues with service before according to previous reviews, they have been resolved since, or we were very lucky. Either way, we really enjoyed our stay at the SMI, even though we were a little under the weather.
