“Charming riad in peaceful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

This was our first visit to Marrakech and we were very happy with Riad Viva. I was travelling with my Mother and Aunty on a 3-day "girl's trip". Our first impressions arriving at 10pm were not great as it's down an dark alley off the main street, but our wonderful porter Hamza lead us to the little oasis that is Riad Viva. Check in was a bit slow after a long flight and they do not have a restaurant, so be prepared to head out again or have something to eat at the airport if you are arriving late. Thank goodness Hamza was still around to help us find Jemaa el Fina and importantly a bank to get some local money. Hamza ended up being a wealth of information, good English and someone you want to run into on the way home from a busy day in the souks or sightseeing. Breakfast each morning was lovely on the terrace, the room (Rose Suite) was spacious, clean with a stunning Morocaan bathroom. We had dinner on the terrace one night which was well worth the money after a long day out. All the girls on reception and in the kitchen were lovely: Aziza, Khamisa, Hassamia and Fatiha ... they all work so hard. The Hamman/massage staff do not speak a word of English .... ask the reception staff to translate anything you may need translated before you're in your underwear sitting on a marble bench. I would definitely stay here again, it was nice to escape the chaos of Marrakech each day. The pool was gorgeous and the riad is only one year old, so nice and clean and everything works!

Room Tip: Rose Suite perfect for a family

Riad Viva is absolutely lovely, and staff are so incredibly friendly! We often got advice from them about the maximum we should pay in the souks for certain items, or suggestions about good restaurants to go to. Eating breakfast on the terrace was lovely too, storks and swallows would be flying overhead and the view was just of blue sky and huge palm trees. Bliss! (A note about the breakfast, it was delicious and filling, but very Moroccan - don't expect a fry-up or cereal... it's about 2 pastries each, plus bread, butter, and various jams + yoghurt or fruit + fresh orange juice and tea/mint tea.) It was also so nice to back from the chaos that are the marakkech souks and relax with some mint tea and shisha on the terrace in the afternoon/evening.

The only hitch was that we'd asked for a 2nd floor room, but as we'd booked through a 3rd party, we didn't find out until the day before that we'd not got it, and we'd gotten the Freesia room on the ground floor, which can be noisy. One guest chose our door to stand outside and whinge loudly about her breakfast not being ready at about 6am.. and occasionally you could hear clattering from the kitchen in the early morning. I wonder if they've thought about soundproofing the door? Truthfully I thought I'd be more gutted about not getting the room I'd requested, but the Riad was so lovely, and staff so nice (and at the end of the day, it's not like we're spending hours in there) I ended up not really caring. The room we'd gotten was really lovely anyway, especially the bathroom. Although they had made the decision to decorate the bathroom door with a large red transparant glass panel, which was a bit odd, but we just covered it with one of the bathrobes provided. Of course, if watching your other half on the toilet is your thing, then this room is perfect for you...

It's really conviniently located too - it's about 10/15 minute walk to Jemaa el Fina. There are about 3 or 4 little streets to walk down to get to it, so best it you get the the Riad's hotel transfer, they get a taxi to meet you at the airport, then the porter meets you in the main street and will carry your luggage to the hotel for you. Otherwise you might end up a bit lost the first time as the streets to the Riad are too narrow for vehicles to get down! Plus it avoids the stress of the Moroccan taxi drivers, who are dying to charge you £50 for what is a £5 journey on the fare meter...

Basically, if it wasn't for the noise issue, Riad Viva is so lovely, and our stay was so relaxing, it would be 5 stars! (and if we were allowed half stars I'd have given in 4 1/2 anyway, as the noise was only an issue on two of the days we stayed out of five).

Room Tip: If you book through a third party (lastminute.com,expedia, etc) make sure with the Riad that you'...

We stayed 5 nights in Morocco and 1-3 and 5th night in Riad Viva. After the first night in Rose Suite we were told that we will be moved to another better suite and we do not understand why because our previous room was much better. We mentioned this but did not have much response. Breakfasts were the same every day, pancake, jam and bread. On our last morning we received 1 croissant each and a bit of melon. The breakfast was not enough and definitely there was no fruit, cheese or eggs!!!!! I am surprised that water melons which are so plentiful there are not served for breakfast. We never received any complimentary tea, apart from the first day on our arrival and not even on our last day when we returned from the city exhausted from the heat of the day and were waiting to go to the airport till 6 pm while our suitcases were in storeroom. We ordered some cold drinks but did not get any! While walking to the taxi through the alley we were followed by 2 members of staff accusing us of not paying the bill for the last night. The bill was paid in the morning to another member of stuff and obviously there is some communication problem between members of staff. That was however very unpleasant and embarrassing. Lucky I found the confirmation in my wallet!! However that did not spoil our time in Morocco which we enjoyed very much. The staff arranged for the tickets for the bus to Essauira and transfers to and from the airport. The location of the hotel is very good and after a few days you begin to feel at home. I would still recommend the hotel, but we did not have such a wow factor as others mentioned in their reviews. Maybe we were a bit unlucky!!!!

Room Tip: Corner rooms are more private.

The Riad is lovely and the staff are too. Our room was excellent - beautiful decor, spotlessly clean and comfortable. We were collected from the approach street which was lucky as we would never have found it on our own. The main square is within easy walking distance. The rooftop terrace was a nice place to chill in but don't expect to swim in the small pool. It is really only good to cool down in.
My only negative was the quality of the breakfast. I felt it let the experience down in quantity and choice.
However overall I did enjoy my time here.

we decide to stay at this riad as a direct result of what we had read on this forum and i'm glad that we did,we decided that it would not be easy to find so we chose the taxi transfer to take us directly there.once we got our bearings it took us less than 10 minutes to walk to the main square.so is ideally situated, the staff are just brilliant and cannot do enough to help you, would recommend this riad many times over.

Room Tip: we stayed in the narcisse room very clean far more than adequate

Riad Viva is both beautiful and authentic, with top notch service particularly from Yussaf and the ladies on the desk. We arrived at about midday following a long overnight flight and on asking if there was any chance of any food post breakfast they said of course and brought us a full spread ( more extensive than the usual breakfast that was wonderful every day....highly recommend the Moroccan mint tea, inspired us to buy our own leaves and tea pot!) and although we expected it they never even charged us for the pleasure. And ok so it might have taken them a little longer than predicted to have our room cleaned and ready but it really didn't matter as we were feed and had the beautiful roof top terrace to luxuriate on, plunge pool and all ( a rarity but absolute winning feature in a Riad). The Riad service was excellent they were happy to provide with whatever you needed or wanted no matter the day or night and because their are only a small number of rooms we often had the whole roof terrace and plunge pool to ourselves which was an absolute dream. It is also very well located down some typically Moroccan twisty-turny back alley's (don't be phased full of children playing and selling sweets and people heading to Mosque), quiet and well away from the crazy hub bub of the square but close enough. Old town is beautiful don't ever bother going to new town but definitely take a trip out the Atlas mountains and the waterfalls but don't forget small pennies, gorgeous Berber tangines in the river and opportunities to buy handmade Argan products. Riad Viva made this all possible! Would definitely stay again!

What a truely amazing experience, the city is just so interesting and different. The riad is beautiful, clean and the staff so friendly and helpful. The service is just above many top hotels that I have stayed in. Such friendly, smilie and lovely people. Would highly recommend staying and I will be going back with my children.
