“Wonderful week in Marrakesch!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Hi, we are a German couple and last week we have been the first time to Marrakesch.

It is good to organize a transfer from the airport because in the beginning the Riad is hard to find. The Riad offers a transfer from the airport and back for 15 Euros each way.
Azzouna 13 is good situated in the Medina, there might be nicer parts, but it is very interesting and busy like everywhere in the Medina.
It is close to everything. It is approximately a 10 minute-footwalk away from the big square and close to the leathermarket (part of the souks - Shoppingarea). Maybe for some people a 10-minute-walk sounds much, but walking through the streets of the Medina is part of the fun. The streets are crowded and there is always something interesting to see, eat or buy.
It is a small Riad, which makes it feel more personal. The owner of the Riad has a very good taste in decoration and design. It is very clean, which is important to me. When we arrived the first night, I was overwhelmed by its beauty! It also has a wonderful rooftop terrace. The Caretaker of the Riad, Sadik, was a wonderful host. He was always friendly and helpful. One night, when I realized that I forgot to buy drinking water, he went out for me to get me some. I'm sorry, that we couldn't say goodbye to him properly, as we needed to leave for the airport, before he came back to the Riad:(.
Also the cleaning lady and the chef were very nice and friendly. We felt welcome and at home. Hope to be back someday!

The Riad is even better than the internet site makes you believe!
Old renovated Riad (2010) located in the Medina on the border of the Souk. After entering in the courtyard all the noise of this fibrating city dies of and you will find yourself in a peaceful, tastefully decorated, comfortable and surprisingly large home.
The housekeeper Sadik is very helpful and thoughtful, always ready to arrange whichever need or demand you can think of.
The location is fine and offers lots of possibilities to experience the life and culture of the city, shop or dine.
Coming back in the evening with the fire burning (february nights do get cold) in the lounge area and sipping our Mint tea was the perfect closure of the day.
Having breakfast on the roof terrace in the morning sun was a perfect energizer to start the day
Highly recommended, high price quality ratings!!
We'll be back

Great riad in the centre of Marrakech. Hard to find in the beginning. After you stepped into the riad you'll notice the tranquility and the sophisticated design. Really standing apart from the other riads. Service was great, really clean rooms and outstanding overstay service. Bed and bathroom were spotless!
We had dinner by the fire place. Very good tajine! I would 100% recommend to go there!!

Pros
- Travel was organised by the Riad for EUR 15 each way. I gave the flight number & estimated arrival time by email 1 month prior, the driver was at the exit terminal waiting for us with a handwritten sign. Easy! Get the transfer on the way to the Riad or you will be guaranteed to get lost!!! Could potentially get a cheaper taxi (but definitely less luxurious!) on the way back to airport.
- Amazing team of staff made a huge difference to the stay - Sadik greeted us with mint tea, maps and tips (he is quite a celebrity in these reviews!), the cleaner who was always lovely, smiling and did a wonderful job, the cook (brilliant food) and the punctual friendly drivers.
- Menzah Jouj room is slightly pricier than the others in the Riad but was worth the premium! It's at the end of the corridor which afforded a bit more privacy and was also much larger than all the other room. It also had its own sitting area and a 2 person stone bathtub (note hot water issue below)
- Quiet oasis 5 mins walk from the souks and 10 to the square, great location. You are right in the middle of it immediately! All the local boys (who will walk to you to where you need to go for 5 Dirhams - dont give them any more even if they complain!) know the road. Keep the card Sadik gives you so that when you lose your way someone can take you back!
- Amazing terrace on the roof where breakfast is served on a warm sunny day. The pictures on the website look EXACTLY like it does in real life. Gorgeous.
- Breakfast consistent of fresh OJ, tea/coffee, breads and jams/butter, omelettes on the first day and morrocan pancakes on the second.
- We took the advice of another traveller review and had the 3 course dinner in the riad. Best advice ever. SCRUMPTIOUS. Much better meal than what we paid more for at Fondouk. Clean and authentic experience in the riad.
- Sadik is the perfect host going above and beyond, you feel at home immediately and we don't even need to lock our door on the way out! (there is no way of doing so even if you wanted but its perfectly safe). We got back to the riad quite late when it started getting cold, he had turned the heating on for us so our room was nice and cosy!

Cons
- We ran out of hot water several times. If I took a 15 minute shower, then my partner unfortunately would only have hot water 75% of his shower. We specifically booked the room so we could enjoy a bath, but unfortunately a lack of hot water meant this was not possible.
- As the Riad is made of stone, this meant it could get very cold at night. Running the heating on through the night would fix this (but quite drying on the skin)
- Wifi won't work through the thick stone in the room upstairs. Good for loading text pages but thats it. Go downstairs ground floor for better wifi reception.
- We stayed for 2 nights but were not given any replacement towels. Towels that were too damp were removed but not replaced. Unfortunately we had to reuse wet towels the second day as towels don't dry well in cold stone bathrooms
- Minor gripes: No slippers, it was cold to walk around the bathroom/stone areas of the room (shoes need to come off after a day walking around in the grime of the souks!) Bed is quite hard and is 2 doubles put together as one. No toilet roll holder. Found some hairs in the tub on the first day but easy for me to clean. Drain in the bathtub was very slow.

Room Tip: pay the premium to get the menzah jouj! it is every bit as good as it is in the photos :)

My parents and I stayed for a week in Riad Azzouna 13 and what a week it was! We all had a wonderful time exploring marrakech but the Riad was one of the best things about our holiday! We had a lovley breakfast with traditional moroccan pancakes every morning on the roof terrace and there were both coffee and the traditional mint tea (the a la menthe). The host, Sadik was very welcoming and was always ready to help or give good tips regarding restaurants or just general advice on the city. The Riad was really quiet and calm whenever we needed a break from the busy streets of the Medina. When we left the Riad it took about 5 minutes to reach the souks and 15 minutes to reach the Jema El Fna so the Riad really is in the heart of the medina very close to everything! The sounds of the city weren't noticeable in the Riad unless sitting on the roof terrace mid-day. The rooms were clean, and bathroom was wonderful with a big bathtub that could easily fit two people. The manager, Sadik, also arranged two daytrips for us, with one of the drivers/guides of the Riad. We took a daytrip to the atlas mountains were we got to walk a bit and have lunch with a local berber family and we also took a one day trip to Essaouira by the sea where the driver/guide helped us fix lunch where we went to the market and chose our own fish to barbeque. Overall a wonderful Riad with a lovely staff from the cleaning ladies to the manager and the drivers. The whole family would love to stay there on our next visit to Marrakech, because surely, we'll be going back!

My stay at Azzouna 13 was impeccable. From the beauty of the riad, the friendly staff, the spotless room and the always excellent service, to the situation close to the souks and the main square - I can only give Azzouna 13 my best recommedations.

The manager Sadik - always with a big smile - was an amazing host, and instantly made me feel welcome and at home in the riad. He was very attentive and helpful. He and the rest of the staff made my stay in Marrakech even more enjoyable.

The roof terrace is a jewel, providing a wonderful, tranquil seclusion from the business of the streets, and the views of the Atlas Mountains, the Kotoubia Minaret and the city turns magical during the sunset and the echoes of imams calling to prayer.

I will definately return to Marrrakech and Azzouna 13.

TIP! Try having dinner at the riad - 3 courses of delicious moroccan dishes - the food is fabulous and the settings are incredibly romantic!

What a great find, this was my first visit to Marrakech and The Azzouna 13 lived up to my expectations. It had a wonderful atmosphere and the staff could not have made me feel more welcome. The Riad was renovated about 3 years ago as I understand and in my eyes has been done so,perfectly. I would not hesitate to stay here again and will recommend it to anyone that wants a traditional place to stay in the heart of Marrakech. I just loved it.
