We recently spent 4 nights at Riad Badi based on the amazing reviews on Trip Advisor. Every review is true and it is difficult to add anything to what has been said many times before.
Staying with Christian and Isabelle was like staying in their home (they live at the Riad) and they made us feel very welcome. On arrival we were given mint tea and biscuits and Isabelle showed us a map with points of interest. Christian then spent over an hour taking us on a walking tour of the area and the souks to help us get our bearings. This was invaluable with lots of useful tips and recommendations, even though we still managed to get ourselves lost in the souks on several occasions.
The first evening we ate at Riad Badi and this was an excellent 3 course Moroccan style meal prepared and cooked by Isabelle and her team. We ate there again on the third night. This too was excellent and different to the first night.
Breakfast was varied every day and Isabelle spent time explaining what the various breads, cakes, pancakes, yoghurt, jams and fruit were. They were served by the 3 very polite and friendly local women who work with Isabelle and Christian at the Riad. On our last day, without any prompting Isabelle had put a candle in the cake, served with breakfast, and they all sang happy birthday to my husband! A lovely touch.
Riad Badi is down a quiet street but only a few minutes walk to the Medina and Souks. The Bahia Palace, Maison de la Photographie, Medersa Ben Youssef and Museum of Marrakech are all within walking distance. The Badi Palace is even closer to the Riad, being almost a stones throw away and definitely worth a visit, despite it being derelict. It’s worth going on the hop on, hop off open topped tourist bus which takes you further afield. The bus stop is very close to the Riad. This tour enables you to visit the Menara and Majorelle gardens and also the Palmeraie area.
Marrakech is a crazy place that stimulates all the senses, but the Riad itself is a lovely, tranquil place to come back to at the end of the day. It has been lovingly furnished and is very comfortable and welcoming. We had the Cannelle Room plus ensuite, with a huge shower area. The room was fitted with an air-conditioning unit which would be welcome in the summer and is used to heat the room in the winter. Free, fast Wi-Fi is available for the clients. Unfortunately we didn’t use the roof terrace but this would be lovely in the warmer days and evenings.
We sampled the food at 3 restaurants close to the Riad and these were all very good. On our last night we went to the MK Restaurant and had their 5 course gourmet meal which was excellent. It is expensive but definitely worth it for a special occasion. You do need to book and it’s worth finding it in the daylight before you go as it is difficult to find.
Should any of our friends or family consider going to Marrakech in the future we would definitely recommend staying at Riad Badi with Isabelle and Christian as they made wonderful hosts. It really felt as if we were staying with friends and it was sad to leave.
