“Fantastic place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

I have just returned from a short break in Marrakesh and I normally do not write reviews but this time I can't help myself as I believe that everyone should know about this gem in the middle of a busy city!
Villa Makassar has every possible comfort, beautiful and tastefully designed rooms and relaxing surroundings that made our return from the busy Medina, like walking into a man-made paradise!
It was my pleasure to meet the owner, Fouad who made our stay very special and his personal attention and care was very much appreciated.
His staff is carefully selected and I feel obliged to name Ismael and Rabii who were so nice, helpful, "VERY GOOD SINGERS" and genuinely lovely people and made our stay very special. Thank you guys!
There is no other place I would stay if I went back to the amazing Marrakesh! Highly recommended!!!

Room Tip: The rooms are all fantastic and individually designed.

I went to the Villa Makassar with my 16 year old daughter and we had a fabulous time. The hotel and staff were second to none. They looked after us so well and made the holiday spectacular. They helped us with trips and maps and told us about places to explore. The hotel is beautifully furnished and really luxurious. A real treat.

We don't usually go back to the same place let alone the same hotel but Villa Makassar in Marrakech has proved the exception and for very good reasons. Morocco is a relatively short flight to a warmer climate and our last visit in June 2013 to Villa Makassar was such a treat we decided to return this year in April. Once again we were not disappointed. The standards of service and accommodation met all our expectations and the overall atmosphere of the Riad was peaceful and relaxed despite being fully booked.

There was a change from last year but a change for the better. The new chef has introduced an extended menu adding international cuisine to the existing Moroccan dishes. We ate in the Riad's restaurant 4 times this visit and on each occasion the food was of the highest quality and beautifully presented.

As other recent reviews have stated the staff, the owner and the setting are all perfect and its location in the old part of Marrakech means it is in easy walking distance of all the historic parts of the city that visitors would want to visit. For those that want to travel further afield then the staff will make all your arrangements for you with a minimum of fuss. We went on a day trip to the Atlas Mountains and that was very special with excellent guides and booked by the Riad at a really reasonable price.

We are already thinking about our next visit.

Room Tip: All the rooms are unique, cool and quiet. If you can go for a junior suite double rather than the t...

Fantastic stay! The riad, the decoration, food and service! An oasis in the middle of the buzz from the Medina. The owner, who is super nice, is the cherry on top of the cake. Recommended 100%. It was our first stay with them and definitely not the last!

My husband and I have just spent five nights at this lovely riad. An oasis of calm and cool ' art deco' elegance. Lovely room and a huge bathroom which could have come straight from a 1920's film set but with all mod. cons. The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble. We ate there on three nights. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent.. We especially enjoyed the live guitar music from Ismail. Breakfast on the roof terrace is a treat, but beware of the wasps. After a day in the souks this is the perfect place to relax.

We stayed in Villa Makassar for a week in March.
It is a riad in the Kasbah at the south west corner of the Medina. It is an island of luxury in a sea of relative squalor, which seems to be the same as most of the riads in the Medina.
The villa is set around two courtyards with around 10 guest rooms, a restaurant, various sitting rooms, a hammam (spa), an outdoor pool and a large roof terrace with plenty of room for sun bathing, etc. The Jacuzzi was huge and wonderful.
They have spent a fortune on the art nouveau décor, which is very well done throughout. Our suite was VAST and there were some nice touches, like rose petals on the bed and even down the loo! The bath was also huge and inlaid with art nouveau mosaic.
The staff were wonderful throughout our stay. They all spoke good English and could not do enough to ensure that our needs were met.
I would like to give Villa Makassar 5 stars but there were too many “rough edges” to warrant this.
Although the décor is amazing, our room was starting to look “tired” and it was expensive (at around £250 - £300 per night) compared to 5* hotels in other countries, especially as most facilities had to be paid for.
On the first evening, we ate in the restaurant. The food was good but there was not enough of it and it was quite pricey (like most decent restaurants in Marrakech). The following evening, we took the complimentary meal that was part of our package. They “shot themselves in the foot” with this, as the portions were small and the food “average”. So we did not eat there again. This may explain why the restaurant was virtually empty every night, unlike many other riads and restaurants in the area, where you often have to book a table.
Although we are not TV addicts, we do like to watch the news occasionally if it is available in English. Although there were hundreds of satellite channels available, most were either in Arabic or French. Apparently, some other guests were able to receive Sky News in English, but it was not available in our room and they were not able to fix this during our stay, despite several attempts. As they have been open for 3 years, I would have thought they would have sorted this out by now.
Because there was no double glazing, it was quite noisy in our room, especially first thing in the morning, when we were often woken by the call for prayer (around 04:45) and then the birds (someone shoot that pigeon!).
So overall, a beautiful place with delightful staff but with room for improvement.

A girlfriend and I stayed here on our first trip to Marrakech recently. The hotel itself was beautiful and the service we received from the young lady at the front desk (I can't remember her name, but she studied in Spain and had a great sense of humor) was perfect….she called taxis for us, made dinner reservations and answered all of our typical tourist questions. We really felt like we had someone to help us in a place where we did not really understand how everything works. I will definitely go back!

Side note: The souks were great for shopping, especially as an interior designer, but as Americans we definitely paid higher prices! be sure to start at 10% of the price they ask and be willing to walk away…..know what your max price is before you start talking to them!
