“Remote Altas Mountains mosque”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

Tin Mal is a remote mosque in the Atlas mountains. If you have a car brave the dirt roads in the mountains and drive up from Marrakech, the route is beautiful and perfectly safe as long as you abide by one important rule - 'big' has priority, so pull over when a big lorry approaches. In the area close to Tin Mal you'll find little French spoken except at cafes, but the people are friendly and helpful - a meal is easily found but you may have to have the dish the cafe owner is prepared to make - usually a delicious omlette. The mosque is now a monument only, a guide will show you around if it is open but even a view from the outside is worth the trip along the valley road. Inside you can marvel at the solitude, the symmetry and the dedication such a remote mosque must have taken to build. The village there is straight from biblical times, the children only say 'bonjour', unless you can understand berber. Tip generously.

“Tin Mal Mosque”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

We drove from Marrakech through stunning scenery in The High Atlas to visit this exquisite 12th Century Almohad dynasty mosque. The winding road seemed to go on for ever and hardly another car in sight! A couple of local lads sitting outside greeted us and told us they would get the key to open up! The simplicity of the mosque and the magnificent arches give the feeling of of infinity....... Being the only tourists there made it feel so special!
We would highly recommend stopping for lunch opposite the mosque where there is a small restaurant called Chez Abdou. We had a salad followed by the most gorgeous Berber Omlette cooked in a large terracota dish there! The owner and family were most hospitable to us chatting to us about the mosque and the country. And with Tin Mal opposite what a backdrop to a wonderful meal!!

“beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

The Tin Mal Mosque is a mosque located in the High Atlas mountains of North Africa. It was built in 1156 to commemorate the founder of the Almohad dynasty, Mohamed Ibn Tumart. It is one of the two mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims, the other being the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. The prototype for the Tin Mal mosque was the Great Mosque of Taza, also built by Abd al-Mu'min. The Koutoubia in Marrakech was in its turn modelled on it.

Hired a guide for the day - lovely guy but obviously he took me to the places and people he knew - so paid over the top for some things - I did go again by bus and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Mosque is a beautiful place and lovely to see.

Still being restored but really interesting to see the intricate work inside. Liked the journey to get there.
