“Do not mix up horrible Riad Sheherazade with the nice Hotel Sherazade”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

We spent 5 days in the Riad Sheherazade since it was recommended by a friend. It happened to us also that we were mixed up between the nice hotel near Jamma al Fna and this Riad which is quite a bit to walk. So be careful!!!. The couple running the hotel was really unfriendly. The rooms were dirty and the bathrooms even worde. The shower couldn't be used since it was directly overflowing. We had a lot of cockroaches and other insects in the rooms. They did not take care. We were travelling with kids and we mentioned it of course when doing the reservation. But, when we arrived, they were always scolding the kids. The breakfast was horrible with a kind of orange juice made of powder. The rooms displayed on the webpage do not show the reality and the the terass was a dirty place which had nothing to do with the photos displayed. The riad is inadvisable!!!

First, there are two unrelated Sheharazades in Marrakech - a Riad and a Hotel. Don't get them mixed up as we did. We meant to book at the hotel, but not knowing there were two places with the same name booked into the riad.

The Riad Sheherazade is terrible, despite reports on booking sites which describe it in glowing terms. I'm very suspicious of the authors of those reports. OK, its in the medina so you expect it to be old and not well maintained, but we spent 5 weeks in Morrocco and this was the worst place we stayed in the entire trip.

First, we booked on-line for 6 nights and paid a deposit. The place is impossible to find, quite normal for a medina, but many of the locals didn't know where it was either. When we eventually found it we were told that we could stay one night, would have to find somewhere else to stay for 2 nights, and then could come back for 3 nights. No way, since we had booked 2 months in advance and had paid a deposit for 6 nights. Lots of argument, then they decided we could stay.

Not sure what this was about as there were free rooms all the time we were there.

The place is very run down and run by a Morrocan couple who could not care less. They were never around except at breakfast which was canned orange juice (Morocco is famous for its fresh oranges, they even grow them in the public parks and along the streets), stale bread and jam

Our room was not cleaned for the entire 6 days - not even the bathroom bin emptied or the threadbare towels changed. The bathroom was in poor condition and the shower drain was 99% blocked - you could only have a 2 minute shower before it flooded the floor.

It rained several times while we were there and the canvas cover over the small central courtyard, with the breakfast area below, leaked like a sieve so we had breakfasts in the rain and wet on a couple of days.

On the bright side, it is about 12 minutes walk to the square, the hot water worked and the local medina shops were very friendly and sold us fruit, snacks and bread at local prices. And it was relatively cheap.

I would avoid this place unless truly desperate!
