“Fabulous Stay at Riad Cherrata”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014

This was mine and my husbands first time in Marrakech and to be honest we weren't sure what to expect. To our delight, our stay was just great and we loved every bit of it. We only stayed for three nights at the Riad but Valerie made sure everything was perfect for the entire duration. Upon arrival, we were brought to the Riad, where dinner was awaiting us, and wow, the dinner was exceptional and no doubt it was THE best that we had throughout our stay in Marrakech. The lovely Sejda (the chef) made homemade salads to die for, a delicious main course of Lamb Tagine and gorgeous Moroccan pastries for after. After dinner, Valerie explained the ins and outs of Marrakech and made us feel at ease about everything. The room was a good size and very clean. Valerie also provided us with a mobile phone in case of emergencies which was great. She was always there if we needed to know something. Overall, the Riad is exceptionally well maintained, very clean and just lovely to stay in but for us the service Valerie provided was second to none. She looks after all her guests so well and genuinely cares and nothing is too much trouble. Sejda the chef is so lovely, and her food is amazing, if I could kidnap her and bring her to the UK then I would be so happy as she makes the best food I have eaten. I would highly recommend Riad Cherrata.

I only have high praises for Valerie and her staff. I traveled with my 16 years old niece and as a first timer to Morocco and traveling with a young woman, finding Valerie was a godsend. We arrived in Marrakech at night, but our suitcases decided to stay in Casablanca overnight :-(. Valerie had organized a taxi to pick us up from the airport and, being that we managed to get out of the airport by about 10pm, having someone there to wait for us was really great. When we got to the riad, Valerie was there to welcome us and to reassure us that she would help us with whatever we needed. The following morning she provided us with toothpaste and toothbrushes and even a little of her skin products for us to use, she is so sweet. Thankfully, our bags arrived in the morning but I had to go to the airport to pick them up, that meant that the schedule for the day would have to change. She helped me do that by making some phone calls on my behalf and got me a taxi to go to the airport (pick up and drop off at the riad!!). Everything turned out fine, but I guess I would have panicked a little if it wasn't for Valerie moral support and practical help. Thank you, Valerie. She gave us a phone to use for the three days we were there, so that we could call her anytime if we needed anything and for making local calls, she gave us excellent suggestions for restaurants and gave us the famous "magic map", which indeed turned out to be magic!
The house is beautiful, very cosy, welcoming and comfortable and super clean! The location is perfect, away from the noise and traffic but an easy 10 minutes from Jeema El Fna. The breakfasts are to die for, with some moroccan breads and some french pastries as well! The staff are top notch and a big thank you goes to Saadia for her breakfasts, for being there all the time to see us off to our excursions and to welcome us back at the end of the day and for her unforgettable sweet smile!
When we left to go for a 4 days desert trip,Valerie packed our breakfast (they picked us up early!), which was great, we ate all of it on the road! She took the time to talk to the driver and guide and even walked with us to the car (it was a few minutes walk to the car, as they cannot get in the medina). Valerie looked after us from the minute we walked into her house to the moment we left. It was a very special experience to be there and I am so thankful I found and booked Riad Cherrata for my Marrakech vacation. The people, the house, the location, the food…it was just perfect in every way!

Room Tip: We were in the Zouak room on the top floor. I loved it, the beds were great, the pillows, too! Love...

Valerie the owner really cares for her guests which as a woman travelling alone was very important to me. She organised a taxi to bring me from the airport to her door, briefed me on security including giving me a mobile phone for emergencies, directed me to the principal attractions in the city and even personally guided me to a restaurant on the first evening. The Riad was spotlessly clean and the rooms beautifully furnished and very comfortable. The roof terraces offered a fantastic view of the city and were a real suntrap which was a plus in early January. The breakfast was delicious with a variety of dishes and plenty of it. The location of the Riad was very convenient being only about 10 minutes' walk to the Jemma El Fna. Valerie organised a Hammam treatment at my request and it was at a well organised centre where the treatment was excellent. I would thoroughly recommend Riad Cherrata to anyone visiting Marrakech.

The Riad Cherrata is located inside the walls of the Medina, the oldest part of Marrakech. The riad (hotel) is built on a vertical plane as is everything in the Medina. The buildings rise three or more stories above the narrow streets, turning them into quaint tunnels.
The walls are constructed of brick and plaster and painted the color of sunset. We slept on the second level, breakfasted on the first and sunned ourselves on the rooftop terrace.

As guests of Riad Cherrata and armed with Valerie's "Magic Map" we had easy access to restaurants and markets offering exotic food and wares. Valerie took care to highlight everything we expressed a desire to experience. The food we ate at Un Dejeuner a Marrakech and other nearby restaurants was treated as art, almost too pretty to eat.

Naturally we were captivated by the donkey carts which serve as the engines of the Medina. The cobbled streets are too narrow for cars so donkeys haul vegetables in and trash out. And the moped traffic added just enough thrill to keep us alert and on our toes.

Back at the riad, the accommodations were so incredibly ideal we were tempted to weep. The bed, for starters, was a cloud of joy. We had not slept that good in a long time. Breakfast was an extravagant spread of home made jams, yogurt and breads.

Everything was clean. Valerie's staff, a trio of multi-talented women, bustled about all day doing laundry, cooking and cleaning. We carried no keys. The ladies let us out and welcomed us back in and could hear our footsteps on the stairs, often beating us to the door. Needless to say, we had a delightful stay at the Riad Cherrata.

The Riad Cherrata is a charming “boutique” hotel, inside the Medina, and close to Jemaa El Fna - which I took to be the (tourist) centre of Marrakech.

The Riad itself is situated in a nondescript alley and, from the outside, is almost anonymous as a hotel. It would be difficult to find under your own steam, and we’re so glad we organised a pick-up from the airport, with the driver knowing exactly where he was going – even though you finish the journey on foot.

Once you step inside, it’s an oasis of calm in a bustling city – there’s a small pool to dip your toes in after a day in the souks, a small breakfast area, and a small lounge. The bedrooms are on the 1st and 2nd floors, with a roof top terrace a floor up again. If, like us, you’re blessed with good weather, the terrace is a veritable sun-trap with views over the whole city and to the stunning Atlas mountains in the distance.

When we arrived, Valérie - the owner, took all the time we needed to understand Marrakech, and to find our feet in a city with lots of intricate streets and alleyways. Thanks to her famous “magic map” we were able to identify the markers which guided us out and back with few difficulties.

Valérie was super-attentive at all times, providing a constant flow of information and advice, flowers in the room, and was very happy to book events for us. She was a God-send.

Finally to breakfast – you will have read this in other reviews, but it bears repetition. Delicious breads from the baker, homemade yoghurt, homemade jams and marmalade, pancakes, … - comfortably twice what you can easily eat. Take an appetite – you HAVE been warned.

We stayed here as a group of 4 for 3 nights. Valerie and her team were amazing. The Riad was clean and well kept. Centrally located and a tranquil setting amongst the business of Marrakesh.

Valerie's recommendations for things to do and restaurants were spot on! We organised a taxi to and from the airport with her which went seamlessly and came at a very good price for four people. She even gave us safety tips for the area which was really appreciated.

We did our Atlas mountain through Valerie who recommends English drivers. We had a brilliant tour guide - Omah who was just brilliant. The tour was also a lot lot less than what other tour companies had quoted us.

Valerie also recommended a spa for us which left us feeling like jelly! I just wish we had time to go there again!!!

Thank you Valerie and everyone at the Riad who made our stay seamless! We would not hesitate to recommend you at all!

We stayed for 3 nights and found this to be an excellent location for Central Marrakech. Valerie is an amazing host who although doesn't live at the property seemed to be there every time we came and went. She organised our taxi from the airport which proved to be an excellent start and sat down with us on arrival and went through all her recommended places and restaurants to visit - which all worked perfectly.

Our room was lovely on the top floor and although the end of November we spent time sitting on the lovely terrace when we got back from our days out.

Breakfast was set up beautifully and the croissants and loaves from the baker delicious - the breads were a little bit over the top for me on carbs but delicious.

Excellent location and easy to find with Valerie's directions and maps - a great stay and one I'd recommend.
