We took our first trip to Morocco last week, and one of the 'musts' on our list was to buy a large rug for our lounge.
Having experienced the manic pace and sales pressure in the souks for the first time, this task was left to the very end of our trip - out of sheer avoidance!
After a few false starts and about an hour spent with a fairly nice, if insistant fellow, we managed to get through to him that, no we weren't tough hagglers, but only had a certain amount of money to spend, but also knew what we wanted!
He must have realised that he would not get the price he wanted from us, so kindly took us around the corner from the main carpet souk to a quiet courtyard, where he said he knew someone with beautiful carpets who might be willing to give us a better price, as he was not in the main souk.
After insuring us that we would love this new shop, as it was like 'Alladin's caravan', we followed him up a flight of ancient stone stairs and through a wooden door to be greeted by Bassidi Brahim, who calmly ushered us into a modest size room filled to bursting with jewel-like rugs stacked to the ceiling on every wall.
After about 30 mins of calm discussion and the viewing of about 8-12 rugs, we not only found the carpet we were looking for, but managed to get it within our price range and with very little stress!
Brahim also deals in high quality antique kilims and carpets, and we were shown a gallery brochure from France with some of his antique wares.
Dealing with Brahim and his young helper was an education and a pleasure. If we are ever looking for another quality carpet in Morocco, we will definitely seek him out!
If you would like to check his shop out here are his contact details.
I highly recommend it, and have email/phone contact if anyone wants it.
