“what a nice place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2010

i have visited marrakech on a number of occassions and this riad is by far the best place i have stayed in the city.picked up at airport, walked to the front door, handed a cold beer....happy days.the staff at baba ali are amazing.matthieu is the ultimate host and cannot do enough to make your stay enjoyable.you can really relax here.mohammed even went to get myself and my friend a takeaway while we watched football on tv. we stayed here twice on this trip beginning and end and will stay there again.we had our laundry done on the last day so went home clean! and the tagine that the girls prepared just before we left for airport was superb.the rooms are beautifully decorated as is the roof terrace and it is so quiet with the exception of the nearby mosque....i quite like the call for prayer as it reminds you where you are. djemma el fna easy 15 min away.la fondouk restaurant 5 min away and cafe arabe also very close. area totally safe.the local kids according to a dutch reviewer annoying you are just being kids...you need to relax man.if you want a place to chill after a crazy day in the city this is it.have a beer food wine by the pool.....shukran bezeff matthieu mohammed and the lovely staff!

I stayed here while in Marrakech. Even though i only booked for one night they were more then welcome to extend my stay when i requested. And when they did not have availability they helped me locate another raid.

All the staff were friendly although they predominately all spoke French ( i speak basic french).

The riad has views of the surrounding area. It has a great stylish/modern take on the traditional riad. With deep earthy and mystical tones personalised for each room. Overall a great retreat from the busy Marrakech souks etc (about a 10-15min walk)

Baba Ali was the first of two riads we stayed in during our trip. The riad experience in this general price range seems to be similar across all the different options. Beautiful decor, first class service, great food, comfortable rooms, etc.

Best part about Baba Ali is the service. Anything you need or want, you get, quickly and with class. The staff and the manager went above and beyond what good service requires to take care of us.

The other best part is the food. Fatima cooked up the best meal we had in Morocco. You pay a bit more to eat in the riad, but the quality of the cooking is so much better than you get anywhere else.

The rooms are a bit on the small size (comparing them to the other riad we stayed in) but comfortable and well decorated. The courtyard and rooftop terrace are nicely done.

The location is very good, about a ten minute walk to the square if you don't get lost, but you will get lost.

Negatives: The Baba Ali mosque is right next door so you will wake up at 5 am to the call to prayer. The bathroom does not have a door, so you sacrifice some privacy. The decor is more modern than traditional, if you are looking for something more old city-ish. The picture map given to get you to and from the square is a very nice effort, but not very effective. Photos are too small and spread out between landmarks with no distance markings.

Overall, I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. Beautiful, classy, relaxing riad with great food and even better service.

We stayed at Riad Baba Ali in March 2010 for 5 nights. After weeks of searching for the most traditional, authentic, beautiful Riad we could find, we settled with Riad Baba Ali. Upon arrival we were picked up by an airport transfer organised by the Riad which was excellent and after walking through a maze of streets, past donkeys and local children, we were taken right to the door of the Riad. Finding your way to the Riad is fairly unnerving the first time you try on your own however after doing it once or twice you become very comfortable finding your way around. Once inside the Riad we realised immediately that all of our Tripadvisor research had paid off! The Riad is beautiful and acts as an oasis outside of the hustle and bustle in the Medina. After a days walking around the Souks there was no better feeling than to get back to the Riad and retire to the roof terrace to enjoy a pot of mint tea and talk about the days events.

The staff were also first class and for us demonstrated the reason you stay in a Riad and not a hotel. We had booked on a tour which set off early in the morning and we were unsure of how to get to the office where we would meet our tour guide. Mathieu was kind enough to walk us there and back to make sure we knew where we were going the following morning. Mohammed was also an excellent host, he looked after us very well and made sure we were looked after and were having a good time. We practised our French with him and in return would help him with his English which was good fun.

We also ate dinner at the Riad which was excellent. Locationwise the Riad is around a 15 minute walk to the main square (Djamaa El Fna). If you can get someone to show you the way to the square on your first day this would be invaluable. It took us a couple of tries to get the hang of it but once you have been shown the way its pretty easy. Also if you try to find your own way the locals are very adept at spotting lost tourists and will kindly show you the way to the square however will often be looking for a small fee (10 or 20 Dirhams).

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend the Riad Baba Ali, I stayed there with my girlfriend and we both had an excellent time. We spent hours on tripadvisor looking for the best place to stay and it clearly paid off. We had a fantastic time in Marrakech and a large part of that was due to the hospitality and beauty found at our Riad.

P.S. The photos on the Riads website are great and we felt they didn't do the place justice.

After spending hours trying to choose a Riad, I went for Baba Ali and I am so glad we did. The whole experience from start to finish with the Riad was fabulous. Mathieu arranged the transfers from Airport to Riad, which I would recommend as not the easiest place to find initially (but nowhere is in Marrakech!). We enjoyed a mint tea after being shown around the Riad - What a beautiful place. There is a lounge, dining room, small pool, massage room, 4 bedrooms and roof terrace. All the rooms are spacious enough, immaculate and simply but stunningly done out using local products from the Medina (we asked were to get the bedspreads from to bring one home). We stayed in the Ouarzazate room which was just perfect for us. The room was cleaned every day and there were fresh towels and a hairdryer, air con and heating. We had a simple and tasty breakfast every morning and ate in the Riad twice and the food was amazing (and the best we ate in Marrakech, cooked by Fatima). Drinks were available whenever you wanted (even beer!). The ambience in the Riad was so relaxing, after the hectic streets of Marrakech, coming home to the Riad was a pleasure. The Riad is located just to the North of the Souks and Place Jemaa el Fna and our first walk there was quite an experience, luckily we had Maroune from the Riad to guide us for our first trip out showing us the route to the square through what seemed like a maze of tiny streets and then to the Koutoubia Mosque and down Rue Bab Agnou. It was quite daunting the initial time, but after that we were experts (the Riad was about 15 mins on foot from the main square and all the action. If you like to experience the real Marrakech then the walk from the Riad is just that - watch out for the bikes, horses and donkeys, it is not the faint hearted). The service at the Riad was great, nothing was too much trouble and there was always someone there to help you (but not at all intrusive). We absolutely loved this Riad and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone, if you have any questions email Mathieu at the Riad and he will be able to help. Thank you all at Riad Baba Ali for a perfect Birthday stay in Marrakech, and if we only ever get to visit Marrakech once, I am so pleased we stayed there.
