The hotel looked beautiful when we arrived, a cool pool in the courtyard and typical riad decor. We were welcomed by Said the manager very warmly and shown to our room. The room had a safe, aircon and a beautiful looking bathroom with twin gold sinks.
Generally it was a good place to stay but we were not very brave about the cockroaches which appeared generally overnight.
It was a good location, near to the Jma el Fnaa square and you could see the storks on the Palais el Bahia just next door. The roof terrace was pretty.
Sleeping was difficult - combination of cockroach terrors and the regular calls to prayer.
Not a great hotel for non-smokers. The mostly French guests tended to smoke in the courtyard which had a canvas roof covering so that the smoke blew straight into our room.
The staff were lovely and very accommodating about clearing up cockroaches for us as we didn't want to do it ourselves. They didn't seem very clued up about getting rid of them though as they kept saying they were putting down 'produit'. One day we saw them spray air-freshener under the sink as though that might help!

Riad Assalam was the perfect place for us to stay on our 5 day trip to Marrakech. The city is bustling, busy, loud and exciting, and after a long, hot day of haggling, ATVing in the desert, or exploring the city, it was wonderful to come back to our clean, peaceful, cool hotel. The service was excellent and Said and Abiba really made us feel at home. Breakfast was served each day (and one day, Abiba cooked dinner for just the two of us which we enjoyed in the beautiful dining room, which was one of our favorite meals of the trip). The 2 roof decks were a gorgeous place to relax and watch the sunset with a bottle of wine, and being outside the Medina meant a break from the crowds (and not all riads serve alcohol). Overall, we loved this hotel and the value was excellent. We would give it 4.5 stars if we could, and our only negative was that there was only enough hot water for one person to shower with, and that the second room we stayed in (on a two-part trip) was much smaller and didn't lock properly but was the same price as the other room we had had which was much bigger and nicer. Also, being on a courtyard, as many of the riads are, means that sound travels very easily and we were awoken early a few times (by the call to prayer) when we would have preferred to sleep in, although that's just part of the experience!

We stayed at Riad Assalam during the Christmas break in Dec 2010. It was more than a place for us to sleep, but we ended up making friends there with some other guests and also had some interesting discussions with Catherine, which really enhanced our experience.

- Good rooms, clean. Had a safe in the cupboard for our passports and other valuables. Very clean, running hot water and all the other necessities.
- Good breakfast and the best part is the flexibility. Have it anytime after 8am :). You can even take it up to the Terrace and enjoy the sun
- Have a small pool, which is inside and in the main courtyard. Not sure if I would be comfortable lounging in it as it is the main part of the Riad
- There are 2 terraces and they are great for catching some sun in the day and some wine in the night.
- The location is just brilliant. Right next to the Palace Badii and within 5-10 mins of all the major attractions. Couldnt ask for a better location as it was not just close, but also quiet and peaceful

A few watch-outs
- The approach to the Riad looks a little sketchy, however it is fairly safe. I would recommend getting the hotel to pick you up though, as it is great to get oriented
- Catherine the owner and almost all the staff speak only French. They usually have one person around who knows a bit of English, but not always. Catherine is very nice though, so we didnt really have trouble, but we would have been able to enhance our experience more if we spoke a bit of French

All in all, highly recommended. Would go back.

Quick tips for Morocco
- Cab from airport to Riad: 120 Dhirams is the target, though you usually end up paying 150 Dh (Same as the hotel asks for)
- Bargain Bargain Bargain: Target 30-40% of quoted price for everything

We stayed in Riad Assalam for 3 nights in December. Catherine and her husband, Patrick, are perfect hosts. Such lovely, friendly people. All of the staff are very very nice. The rooms are very comfortable and the location is unbeatable. Very close to the "Big Square" and the Palais - a lovely Riad, Highly recommended!

Beautiful riad. Very central, only ten minute walk to the Jemaa El Fna, but also very quiet. Rooms were clean, comfortable and very well presented. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. A bit tricky to find, but where isn't in Marrakech?

This riad exceeded all expectations. The room was beautiful and the open terrace overlooked the city, the walls of the Baddi palace and a row of storks on their nests. It was near enough to walk to the main square in ten mins but far enough away from the central madness and the very touristy hotels nearer the centre. The staff were very helpful (best for you if you do speak French). A tip to find it is that its location is just through the gate where the Baddi palace and the first alley way on the left (if the palace is behind you) and then first right and it is on your right. One other tip is to bring earplugs because sound tends to travel upwards from the central courtyards of the riad and also the early morning call to prayer will wake you earlier than you may want otherwise. We had a really fantastic stay.
