We spent the Christmas holidays in Marrakech staying in the Riad Medea. With its tranquil, shadowy inner courtyard with olive trees and bamboo it offers a perfect getaway from the buzz of the Medina. Beautifully decorated in a mixture of Art Deco and Moroccan antique, every floor and every room breathes a different atmosphere , from the sun-flooded terrace overlooking the Medina, to the terrace with reading sofa, to the sitting room with fireplace (note the beautiful marble Art Deco lamps!). The rooms are relatively sober, but very clean and decorated with the same loving eye for detail as the public spaces. There are undoubtedly more luxurious Riads in Marrakech, but if elegance, rather than opulence is your thing, this is the place to go. The staff is helpful and friendly and speak English, French and Spanish, and can help you with any questions you may have. Breakfast is very good, with fresh orange juice, yoghurt and fruit, and bread, cake, and pancakes served on an étagère. Although Marrakesh has plenty of good restaurants, we had dinner in the Riad twice. If booked ahead in the morning, the cook will prepare you a sumptuous couscous or tagine, with side dishes and lovely starters for a very reasonable price. On one rather cold evening they prepared a table for us in front of the fireplace, and kept it burning while we played a game of chess afterwards. Situated in one of the winding alleys of the North of the Medina, it is not exactly easy to find, so take a taxi when you first arrive, or ask the manager to send someone to collect you from the airport.
