“Authentic riad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2014

A bit of a story behind this one. We were returning to Marrakech after a trip to the desert and we had not been accessing our emails. We therefore did not receive the email from the owner offering to pick us up from the airport where we were returning our hire car. As a result, we got a taxi and despite the driver's assurances, he had no more than a rough idea where the riad was located. He dropped us off with all our luggage and pointed in a general direction and disappeared. We were immediately accosted by three boys who assured us they knew where the riad was. We were led down many streets and alleys and the boys eventually stopped at a non descript unmarked door down a dingy street. They had been joined by more of their pals by that time. Frankly, we were highly dubious that we had been taken to the right place and on ringing the bell, a guy appeared and there was just a bare wall behind him when he opened the door. No indication it was a riad so we refused to go in. To cut a long story short, it turned out to be the right place. This was a bad start and we concede we should have made better arrangements to ensure we found it. However, we felt that the owner Julian was not particularly understanding. We had emailed him long in advance of our trip to make arrangements and he only got back to us when we had already left home.
Anyway, on entering the riad, it is very authentic. On the ground floor it has a fish pond, a splash pool that is just about big enough to do a couple of strokes, a nice shady poolside area where you can eat or have a drink and a shady bar/lounge. There is also a hammam which we tried and which was a wonderful experience without having to leave the riad.
The roof terrace is amazing, quite big and set out in such a way that different guests can be up there without knowing anyone else is there. There is also a good mix of sun and shade.
The rooms are very authentic and the beds comfortable but there is no getting away from it - they are small. Also, there is no door between the bedroom and shower room/toilet so if you like privacy in that respect, there is none! The shower was powerful and you get a good wash.
Dinner was 25 euros per person for a "surprise" menu - so its four courses and for each one, you have to guess what it is and then they tell you. It was pretty good, the main course was a nice variation on the traditional tagine and was massive.
Alcoholic drinks were a bit more expensive than elsewhere we tried in Morocco (26 euros for a bottle of Moroccan wine, six or seven euros more than we typically paid elsewhere). Julian arranged a massage for my wife, it was good but again fairly expensive.
The riad is really very nice and Julian is fairly welcoming and attentive. But it is difficult to find your way to the souks and the Djema el Fna even after a couple of tries - should be about a twenty minute walk to Djema el Fna if you dont linger in the souks but pretty impossible to find your way back. Best just to get a cab to one of the gates to the walled medina nearby and then walk from there.

Great stay at this Riad which has a lot to offer if you want an authentic stay but still want to enjoy some luxury. The Riad has two nice courtyards, a heated pool and a really great terrace with lots of options to sit in sun or shade. We spent a lot of time up there and it really was an oasis of calm from the slight madness of Marrakech. The host Julien and his assistant Abdul did a great job of looking after us and we can recommend the excellent food served by candlelight in the courtyard. Julien can easily arrange excursions to the Atlas Mountains or elsewhere and also recommends a few local restaurants which are definitely worth a visit. If you do visit make sure to arrange a transfer from the airport with Julien as the place will be hard to find and a cab will drop you nearby which is not close enough. Overall a really good place run by nice people - highly recommended.

We stayed in the Riad in march 2014 and really enjoyed our stay. The welcoming from Julien and Abdul is really nice. They have lots to tell about the riad and Julien is a proud owner who restored it in a real authentic way. The details in the rooms are really nice and the rooftop place is a delight with lots of place to enjoy the Moroccan sunshine.
You will get lost the first time you will visit the souks but just surrender to the feeling :-) Tip is to take a taxi back. Because the riad is near to an exit it is easy for a taxi to drop you.

Room Tip: The room on the ground floor is the smallest I would suggest taking a bigger if you stay more than 1...

We stayed at Riad Les Inseparables for a week and couldn't recommend it more. Julien, the French owner and charming host, has done a wonderful job restoring this 13th century riad into a beautifully authentic and at the same time modern haven from the bustling medina outside. The stunningly beautiful yet fresh and simple decor adds to the feeling of tranquility and the classic combination of traditional style with modern touches such as air conditioning and impeccable bathroom was perfect. We felt completely relaxed and at home in the riad and Julien's hospitality was second to none. He gave us a free tour of the medina, took us to visit the tannery, booked a restaurant for us and arranged an overnight trip to the desert for us and his knowledge and passion was such that he gave us a real insight into the culture and answered any questions/queries that we had. The best meal that we had in Marrakesh was on our last night when we ate in the riad, where we enjoyed a lovely bottle of wine (another perk of the riad being the bar!) and Julien and Khadija prepared the most deliciously tender tagine for us. I highly recommend this riad if you want to experience a bit of the 'real' Marrakesh without staying slap bang in the centre of the madness of the souks, which can be overwhelming at times. And if you enjoy your holiday comforts such as air conditioning, a decent-sized pool, licensed bar and great sun lounging area to chill and read your book for a while, then look no further. One tip would be to make sure you get in touch in advance to request a personalised airport transfer where you will be brought straight to the riad door; we requested for this to be arranged and I think that otherwise it would have been quite difficult to find.
We actually got engaged in the riad so it will always hold a special place in our heart.. :-) Thank you Julien and Khadija for a great holiday!

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor, overlooking the pool and it was lovely.

We booked last minute for three nights at Riad Les Insperables and found the riad very authentic, clean and comfortable. The thing that really sets it apart is the service and attention from Julianne and his staff who are really dedicated to what they do and are very good people.

We went to Marrakech for New Year’s Day and arrived on Dec. 28th, I had booked 4 rooms, for 4 adults and 4 children. The welcome was great, with Julien, the owner, presenting his riad and making the visit. We had a pleasant dinner and afterwards we were driven to our bedrooms. As none of them was communicating and due to the age of our children (11 & 7), my wife and I went to a separate room, each with one child. The nightmare started at 5 am when we were awaken, with my son, by huge waves of water falling down from the ceiling into our bathroom, we got up and quickly evacuated the room. I went to the other part of the riad to look for the owner when I bumped into my friend and learnt that, in the same time my wife and younger child had almost suffocated because of smoke that had filled their bedroom while they were sleeping. My wife had got up, realized what was happening and had evacuated the room with my second son. It was 6 am, at least the owner had arrived but we did not know yet what had happened. By investigating near my bedroom, we discovered that there had been an electrical short circuit in a closed cupboard, that had caused a fire and then set fire to many plastic elements that were in this cupboard. The smoke came from this fire and we had the chance that a water pipeline running inside the same cupboard had melted and thus switched the fire off, that was the water that came down the ceiling... We were all traumatized but at least alive and with no major injury. We could not obviously stay there any longer and I had to look for a new hotel, for 8 people. The owner did not really understand why we wanted to leave… whereas the consequences of this fire could have been dramatic as the riad was full!! Furthermore he did not even offer to reimburse the “night” we spent in his riad, nor did he offer to invite us for the Dec 31st dinner, he made us to pay for everything. At the end of the day, this experience will be a bad souvenir but it is obvious that we will never again go to this riad as we would fear that such an incident could happen again!!
