“Beautiful quiet haven, fantastic staff, Absolute value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2009

Apart from Marrakech being a truly wonderful city, when we arrived at the Riad, James (Who becomes your new best friend) is beyond helpful and accommodating, making you feel, at the end of your trip, that you are simply staying with friends (but friends who make you amazing breakfasts served on the terrace, mint teas and smuggle you in beers on request!) Our room (The olive room) was perfectly sweet, the bathroom was like showering in a plush cave if you can imagine that, extremely clean, powerful shower, comfortable bed with lovely linen and thick duvets. Staff are always around and are very helpful in booking guided tours (Ask for Tashvin - Highly recommended) trips and even walking you through the Sooks so you don't get lost and picking you up from restaurants. We will definitely go back there and I would also take my toddler as the Riad was family friendly. You wouldn't be disappointed with this quiet haven in the middle of the madly fantastic Marrakech!

We decided to go to Marrakech for New Year 2009, and happened upon the website for Riad Maizie and booked it without any additional information (largely as it seemed well-priced in comparison to other riads in the Medina). In short, we were absolutely delighted with the quality of the accommodation and, in particular with the welcome and utter homeliness that we found there… a welcome retreat from the beautiful crazy hustle and bustle of Marrakech.

The Riad itself is an absolute gem and has been renovated to an excellent standard by the owner. It is very authentic and the roof terrace (where we had breakfast) is glorious, with a lovely awning, bougainvillea, Moroccan lanterns, and views over to the Atlas Mountains. In essence, relaxation. We stayed in the Green Room on the first floor, which was truly lovely, and the other rooms we saw during our stay were similarly delightful and decorated in the Moroccan style.

However, the real, real reason that Riad Maizie is amongst the top 3 hotels/guesthouses that either of us have stayed in is because of the warmth and hospitality of the manager, James, and the rest of the staff and friends. Nothing is too much trouble for James. He makes you feel like a good friend and sorts out every small problem that you may experience and so makes your holiday utterly trouble-free. James invited all the guests to spend New Year’s Eve with him as his guest at a Moroccan banquet in the riad. It was a real privilege to see in 2009 with him in such a fantastic city.

James is an absolute font of knowledge and advice on Marrakech and Morocco more broadly. Similarly, his friend, Jamal, helped us to get a good price on some of the wares that we wished to take back to the UK, and was a fantastic guide on our day-trip to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, which included visiting a Berber house and a women’s co-operative making Argan Oil.

I always feel sad returning home after holidays, but this was a different kind of sadness because it involved saying goodbye to new friends as well as a new and wonderful travel destination.

I cannot recommend highly enough. Photos to follow.

We are a fairly well travelled family and yet were wowed by the welcome at this lovely little Riad in the Medina. From the moment we stepped through the door nothing was too much trouble, and we felt comfortable and 'looked after', well beyond the modest price tag (we paid 79 Euros for a family suite over the Christmas / New Year period in Dec 08).

Our room was traditionally furnished and the lovely terrace a real treat. Quite hard to tear yourself away from! As was the roof terrace which is wonderfully furnished with a shady gazebo area, lots of places to rest and distant views of the Atlas mountains.

The breakfast was fabulous and never ending. The general atmosphere is that of relaxed and friendly escapism, fairly sociable whilst we were there but plenty of quiet time also.

Above all it is James, the manager since spring 2008, who makes the difference. He's a natural host and extremely knowledgable and passionate about the area, as are the rest of his team, all of whom made our stay so memorable.
