We came to this place to unwind for two nights in a luxurious setting after spending three night in the Medina of Marrakech.
The Ksar Catalina is a strange mixture of a hotel, an oriental mini-palace and a guesthouse, all in a lavish, palace-like setting. The outside pools and gardens are very nice and the main hall of the "palace" used for breakfast and optional dinner is impressive. The whole place is decorated in an eclectic moorish style with other elemens (such as a few big buddha statues!) The room we had was large and nicely decorated with a large bathroom that includes a huge bathtub (which is unusable for anything but a foot bath though). The room had a strange smell to it and the bath towels and bathrobe provided were sticky and smelled oily. In the basement, there is a hammam and massage place, which we did not use.
In practice we did not enjoy our stay here at all. The list of negatives is unfortunately very long: Ksar Catalina is located in a new residential area very far from the city center (5-7 km). You need a taxi to get there and back with a return trip costing at least 150 dirham/15 euros. Taxi drivers generally don't know this area and it might be quite difficult to get here, especially after dark. There are absolutely no restaurants, other hotels, taxis, shops or anything ielse n this area. There are just 8 rooms in this guesthouse, so chances are that you'll feel very lonely here.
The staff is friendly, but not very helpful to say the least. When trying to book a taxi or an excursion they massively overstated the prices (20€ for a one-way trip to the airport; 100€ for a half-day trip with a private driver). Breakfast is OK but not particularly generous. I had dinner here once. A couscous menu was the only choice. It was delicious but cost 30 euros (!) and a beer cost 6 euros. Even use of the safe box for storing valuables costs 3 euros a day. Finally, when it came to settling the bill for the extras, we were billed in euros but could not pay by credit card and our return money came in dirham. You get the point: we got ripped off here and there is nothing we could do about it.
All in all, just avoid this place. It's poor value for money at best and a scam at worst.
