“Fantastic Riad Menzeh plus Bernard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

This is the most lovely traditionel riad, spotlessly clean, furnished in traditional style, entering here after the frenetic noise and bustle of Marrakesh it is an oasis of calm. Added to which is Bernard the perfect host, warm and welcoming , a mine of information on all things Moroccan without being too intrusive. It was our first visit, and something of a culture shock, but Bernard was there , recommending good restaurants, even on the first evening taking us there, getting us taxis, and one one occasion when we wished to go out of the city helping to plan the day for us,[ we are too old to go trecking.] We cannot praise him and his riad enough, it was like visiting family. One of our most interesting and fantastic holidays, thank you Bernard.

Room Tip: On the Riad Menzeh website you can choose your room, great.

This was one of the best places i've ever stayed. Everyone was so helpful with making restaurant reservations, getting us a cab, showing us the places to go, even walking us to the restaurants at night (we were four girls). Every afternoon when we came back after a long day of touring they would have mint tea and cookies ready for us. The rooms were very nice and clean, and decorated beautifully. I would HIGHLY recommend Riad Menzeh!

A beautiful riad with all the modern trimmings set in a traditional home ( try the Haman scrub and massage), situated in the heart of Marrakech it is the definition of a oasis of calm in a wonderfully crazy city.
And Bernard is the host of Marrakech, he showed us all we needed to know on how to get about and survive without taking the fun of exploring out of it. He made us feel at home, made excellent recommendations that helped us enjoy our stay, by far the best place on our Ten day tour.

We had a way too short but delightful break here. It is a lovely, traditional Morrocan house, spotlessly clean, simply but beautifully furnished and very comfortable. It is a 10 minute (longer if it's 42 degrees out as it was this week!) walk to the square, but easy to find and through a really interesting part of the town.
Bernard has certainly found his forte and appears to love helping & chatting to his guests. And he was so sweet, worrying about my palid English skin getting burnt.
I find it hard to believe that you'll find a better place to stay in Marrakech...

This was our second visit to Riad Menzeh and as before it was perfect. In all our travels we have never come across someone such as Bernard. His friendliness, thoughtfulness, humour and attentiveness is unsurpassed. He is quite simply the perfect host and he along with the cooking skills of Majda and smile of Abla make this the sanctuary of calm that many people need in this magical city. The Riad is a beautiful building but that is what it is, just a building. It is the people and memories you make here that make it the best value accomodation you will ever stay in.

My wife and I visited this lovely riad with another couple and we can only underline the words of praise that are in the previous reviews.

Accommodation

Characterful, cosy, homely and comfortable, the riad only has 5 guest bedrooms which lends itself to an intimate atmosphere. It was really nice chatting to other guests as we had breakfast in the inner courtyard every morning. The riad is clean and spotless. It's an oasis of tranquility compared to the mayhem outside. The location is great, a 15 minute walk (which is a highlight) to the main square.

Service

As prior reviews suggest, great as the accommodation is, the real star quality of Menzeh is the people. Bernard was a truly wonderful host, and we loved his quirky sense of humour. He was incredibly helpful, walking us to the main square on the first day to help us get our bearings, recommending great restaurants, arranging a superb hammam experience within the riad (this was probably the best and most memorable experience we had on the whole trip, quite something considering the fact we did a 3 day camel trek and stayed in the atlas mountains too), sorting out a taxi for us to the airport from the mountains at short notice, offering (but not pushing) good advice when needed. Bernard was ably assisted by Habla and the other staff. We were particularly impressed with Bernard's interest in the local community, he is well respected and as a doctor provides free healthcare to those who need it.

Bernard made us truly feel at home, and was an exceptional host. Nothing was too much trouble. Thanks again!

What a wonderful holiday. The Riad was beautiful and the care taken by Jamal and all the staff at the Riad was outstanding and made the holiday very special. The room that we stayed in (Atlas Room) was comfortable and beautiful and the rest of the Riad was equally stunning. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful as was the evening meal we had. Whenever we returned to the riad we were treated to mint tea which was very welcome. The riad is about 15 minutes walk from the main square along a very interesting and busy street with shops that are not aimed at tourists, the street changes from day to night, if you use shops as landmarks finding the way back to the riad is easy. The walk is safe and the locals very friendly - you will be told that you are going the wrong way to the square but as soon as you say you are returning to your riad you will be left alone. A massage at the riad is highly recommended.
There is so much to say about Marrakech its hard to know where to start. The souks are bonkers and amazing, do people hassle you - yes, are they intimidating - no, if you enter into the whole haggling business with a clear idea of what you are prepared to spend, a smile and sense of humour then it is great fun - once in a shop it can feel hard to leave but its OK to do this. Many of the people we met were so lovely and friendly, it is amazing how they remembered us when we returned to the souk the following day greeting us with a hand shake and a smile. Be prepared to get lost!!! but enjoy it, we found some really interesting places when we were lost - there is always someone offering to show you the way but we were warned that they may take you they long way round and want payment - again a smile and a clear no thank you is usually enough although there are times when you need to be a little more insistant that you do not want them to guide you. Allow loads of time, go off the beaten track, have fun.
The red tour bus was a great way to get around all the sights, it cost about £10 a person and was a good oppertunity to see the difference between the old and new parts of the city. You can hop on and off allowing you to visit the Saadian Toombs - stunning, Badi Palace - huge, Baahia Palace - absolutely beautiful, all these things cost 10 dirhams (75p!!!!!!). The Menara Gardens on first sight do not seem all that impressive, stick with it beacuse when you get to the far side of the pool the view of the Atlas mountains is magnificent - again entrance is 10 dirhams. The Majorelle Gardens although beautiful were the least impressive of all the above sights and the most expensive (50 dirhams). We managed to do all of this in 1 day, the rest on the bus was very welcome.
A visit to the Ben Youssef Mosque is a must - go early to avoid the crowds, the Marrakech Museum is also well worth a visit for the beauty of the buliding alone.
The food is great, we ate in a variety of places from fairly smart restaurants - Cafe Arabe, Souk Cafe, Kozy Cafe all with lovely terraces, to the restaurants that overlook the square and the pop up eating places in the night market. Eating at the night market is an experience in itself the men that try and pursuade you to eat at their place are very funny, the food lovely and incredibly cheap. My fears of getting food poisoning were completely unfounded we ate there twice. Drinking orange juice from the stalls in the square is a must - delicious. A drink in the Cafe du Glacier on the corner of the square is a must in the evening, the view and the noise are amazing, great for people watching.
Jamal arranged a trip to the Atlas mountains for us, an interesting trip in a taxi (1 hour) took us to meet our guide Siad. We walked for about 1 1/2hours before stopping at his home for a cup of mint tea and a rest before a further hours walk to the home of a family member for tagine. The views were stunning and Siad was a brilliant guide.
If you decide to visit Marrakech stay at Riad Menzeh, read up lots, use trip advisor, take a relaxed approach (getting uptight wont help), use you common sense, smile, embrace the culture and recognise the huge difference and go with the flow.
Thank you Jamal - we will be back.

Room Tip: Atlas Room is lovely and peaceful and out of the way on the roof terrace.
