“April in Marrakech!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2008

We are Americans living in Paris, but we opted for April in Marrakech this year and it was an excellent choice. How to convey the charm and peace of this lovely home, which sits squarely in the middle of the bustling Medina? The streets outside are full of life; exotic colors, smells and sounds compete for the visitor's attention, but once one retreats into the courtyard of the Riad, all is quiet, languorous and peaceful. It is like going from full volume to the mute button in one fell swoop.
The courtyard of the Riad is extremely welcoming -- with its view to the open sky and the healthy lemon tree growing in the center of the space. This was my favorite place to lounge and to marvel at the decorating skills of the stylish owner, who is responsible for the harmonious colors and cozy feel of the rooms that open off the courtyard. Happily I never had to venture into the kitchen because that is Aziz's domain: absolutely Aziz is one of the outstanding features of this holiday destination. From the tasty early morning breakfast he served us on the roof of the Riad -- fresh fruit, good coffee, buttery croissants, creamy yogurt -- to the marvelous dinners we enjoyed in the evenings (lamb tagine, brochettes of fresh fish, chicken with preserved lemon and olives), all was up to the standards of the finest hotel restaurants and we didn't have to leave "home" to enjoy such fare. The view from the roof top terrace is splendid -- the Atlas mountains visible in the distance on a clear day -- and it is a perfect spot for lounging and lazy conversation. The bedrooms were cozy and private, and the only drawback for certain persons would be the stairs: this is not a hotel, that is the defining charm of the place, it is a private home, but that means there are no elevators, so there is necessarily a climb to the bedrooms and of course, to the splendid terrace on the roof.
This is the perfect spot for a family vacation, or for friends who want to share a vacation home (there are three bedrooms), or for a couple who want a spacious, romantic hideaway all to themselves.

Riad Souika is truly a calm oasis , a great place to get back to after the hassle, hustle and bustle of the markets. It is very central so location is fanastic. As other reviewshave also stated, the place has a great ambience, with authentic, colouful, tasteful furnishing.

However whilst there may be other similar accommodation (though I doubt it) the icing on the cake is Aziz . The term houseman really does not do justice to what he does , his skills and the added value he brings to the stay.

Firstly he is very welcoming and enthusiatic and of course knowledgable about the city. No task is beyond him! Secondly, and perhaps more important for any foodie - he is simply a superb cook - forget all the fancy restaurants around and just dine in - you will not find better.

  • Liked — Central location, tasteful furnishings and the fantastic cooking of the houseman ziz
  • Disliked — I liked everything - though I guess of all those stairs at the end of a weary day was a bit daunting!

Friends finally got me to write this review to "share the wealth" since I never write reviews but use Trip Adviser all the time. We loved our stay in Riad Souika, an authentic Medina (old city) house --or riad--in Marrakesh. Through a narrow door from a rather forbidding narrow alley, you enter into a magical place. You can rent either the entire house or one of 3 separate double bedrooms, each with private bath. Built around a traditional open courtyard, Riad Souika is very comfortable and cozy. It's not luxury but has all the critical comforts--good beds, cozy reading nooks, a fabulous roof terrace, lots of hot water for baths in bathrooms that are not modern but make you feel like you're in a traditional turkish baths, air conditioning for the summer and heat for the winter. And the food.....
Aziz the on-site houseman takes amazing care of you, and his cooking is "superbe." (easier to communicate if you speak French). I tried to copy his recipes but can't make them taste as good. The Moroccan colors and interiors of Riad Souika are stunning. From the roof, you see the spires of all the minarets and hear the call of the muezzins. You are close to the royal palace and so can see the palace walls and the city's famous storks. You are about 10 minutes walk from the main square (depending upon how lost you get amongst the narrow walkways of the souk!). This is the real Marrakesh--you walk amongst the real people--and even though we are American and not well-loved in this part of the world, felt nothing but friendliness (although the ever present pressure of the souk vendors can get a bit tiresome). One comment, it's not a great house for old people since there are quite few stairs with uneven steps. We were there with our grade-school daughter who found the place magical.

The people from Best of Morocco can arrange pick-up from the airport and tours both within and outside of Marrakesh.

  • Liked — the "feel" of the place, location, Aziz the on-site houseman
  • Disliked — the rooms are heated--but to get from room to room you go through the courtyard and that was chilly in January
