As seasoned world travellers, this was our second visit to Morocco and included five nights at the Riad Kabouli.
Our experience, along with other guests, was a nightmare! This came as a surprise as the Riad was booked and recommended through the Venere site and I hope they will publish this review.
The Kabouli does not deserve the title of a Riad and gives a very bad impression to anyone who has the misfortune to stay there. The worst youth hostel would have been better whatever the price and it was not inexpensive at 65E per night.
The image portrayed on the Riad Kabouli website bears no resemblance to the reality of the place.
The Kabouli is a good 20 minutes walk to Place Jem-el-Fna, but only once you are familiar with the maze of the medina. The entrance to the Kabouli is a small unmarked door situated at the end of a dark labyrinth of enclosed low passageways frequented by hash dealers; the place has a menacing atmosphere and is used as a public toilet and rubbish tip. The entrance is so dark that it is difficult to find the keyhole upon finding the door!
The interior is shabby and unwelcoming; loose plaster, peeling and cracked paint etc.
There is no resident employee as is usual in a Riad to welcome guests and to offer basic help and services.
The first two days we had no gas bottle in our heater and it was very cold. When the gas bottle was fitted, we returned to a room smelling strongly of gas due to a leaking connection….resulting in a third day with no heating. It was impossible to lock the bedroom door from the inside or the outside.
Breakfast was basic by any standards. The place was dirty and tables from New Years Eve were left unwashed and ash trays unemptied. The shower had no curtain or glass so the bathroom was permanently flooded. The towels were small, old, torn and unchanged during our stay.
We have travelled a lot and this is the first time either of us have been completely disappointed and felt it necessary to warn other potential guests of staying here and avoiding an unpleasant stay in Marrakesh.
