“Brilliant Riad.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2012

We had an amazing time at Dar Balthazar.
Riad is only 10 mins walk from the main square, and the walk is well-lit at night.
The first thing that struck us was how quiet and calm it was compared to the chaos of the main square and surrounding streets.
The staff were all very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and added to the excellence of the Riad, especially the member of staff, Rachid, who served breakfast.
Our room was excellent. As we were there in February it got quite cold at night, however the heater provided sorted this out. Bed was very comfortable and clean. Bathroom was very spacious.
The breakfast provided on the terrace was fantastic and set us up brilliantly for the day ahead.
An added bonus of the Riad was the free wifi provided which was extremely helpful.
The transfers arranged to and from the airport worked perfectly. Must easier than getting ripped off by the taxi drivers.
Overall a fantastic place, and a must stay in Marrakesh.

We had an amazing time at Dar Balthazar, the Riad is beautiful and a quiet oasis away from the bustle and bustle of the souks, yet a very short walk from the main square and sights. The breakfast served in the courtyard was perfect, we could have sat there all day and the roof terrace amazing as well. There is nothing we can fault about our stay, helpful, friendly staff make the place a joy to stay in.

Room Tip: we had a suite on the second floor, amazing!

Riad Dar Balthazar is a lovely quiet place to stay convenient for the souks and less than 15 minutes to Djemma El Fna.The staff are very welcoming- as everywhere in Marrakech it helps to speak a little French. The bed was very comfortable and if only the weather had been warmer we would have loved the rooftop terrace! Breakfast in the pretty courtyard was great too and plentiful. The rooms have a/c and hairdryers. There was a plug in oil radiator too if needed. Only criticism was that the room was a bit dusty. We got a great out of season deal so good value.

We're budget travelers who managed to find this riad for a great deal. Normally it would have been out of our price range as it is a higher-end riad (not necessarily overpriced for what you get, but out of our normal range).

Dar Balthazar can be difficult to find, but there are plenty of people around who will show you the way (we paid a boy 5 dirhams to lead us there from where the taxi dropped us off). It's located about 10 minutes from the square. The staff were really nice, and the room was HUGE and clean. We felt like royalty there after leaving our hostel in Fez. The rooms are decorated in tasteful and elegant Moroccan style.

We did make a few observations on areas that they can improve. There was no soap or shower curtain in the bathroom, which would have been nice. The shower is only handheld and there is nowhere to hang it (we were content with the large tub and hot water). Also, the bed was extremely firm, which some people might like. Additionally, the price for meals is very high. Basic breakfast was free and good, with large pots of coffee and tea.

Overall, a great place.

The Riad Dar Balthazar was fantastically located just 5-10 minutes' walk from the centre of Marrakech - it was even closer to the Souks, and in the Koutoubia area - making citysightseeing on foot or by taxi incredibly easy. The staff were fantastic, even though our French is limited we managed to communicate! The rooms are typically moorish, and very clean and tidy - with comfortable beds. In the mornings we had breakfast served on the roof terrace where there are tables and chairs and a few sunbeds - absolutely delicious and very relaxing!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Encens Double Room - beautifully decorated with a window over the courtyard.

Just returned from 4 days, 5 nights in Marrakech. We stayed at Dar Balthazar after seeing many good reviews and I can confirm they are accurate.

The building is beautiful and relatively easy to find once you've got your bearings (I say relatively because it's all tricky in M'kech for directionally challenged folk like me - thankfully i have a husband with a built in compass). This was our 2nd trip to the city and this riad was definitely easier to find that previous ones. Although it's an easy 10 minute walk to the square, this riad is beautifully quiet and peaceful once you step through the tiny doorway.

We pre-booked a taxi pick up from the airport - all went smoothly and it was even a smart minibus rather than the usual battered taxi. We stayed in the double room called Encens which was lovely. It's not huge (and hence is one of the cheaper rooms) but plenty big enough for a few nights. We ate breakfast on the roof terrace every day. Breakfast was a feast - pastries, pancakes, fruit, coffee, juice. We were very well fed. The only thing i would say if i had to be ultra picky is that it might get a bit repetitive if you stayed for much longer - although no more so than being at home! We didn't really use the facilities - tv, internet, evening meals - but they were all available and we saw others using them.

The main things I will remember from Dar Balthazar are: the friendly and helpful staff (nothing was any trouble); the calmness and coolness of the building; and above all the feeling of being made welcome and at home.
