“Rest and relaxation amid the hubbub of the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

Location ideal,it's quiet and relaxed inside the hotel with very good service but so well placed for getting into the heart of the Medina. All amenities are provided and the food in the restaurant was a welcome change from all the tajines and couscous elsewhere-the magret de canard was delicious. Next door is the Ensemble Artinasale so you can check fixed prices there before venturing into the world of haggling in the souks. Would certainly stay here again

Despite being rated as 5*, and despite meriting that rating in some respects, the Ryads Naoura Barrière in Marrakech is a patchy affair.

Its good features are (1) its service levels, which are generally high; (2) its breakfasts, which are generous and varied and can be taken at times that don't require rising with the lark; (3) its location, which, although a leisurely 10 to 15 minute stroll from most of the sights, ensures that it's quiet and set apart from the maelstrom that is Marrakech (4) its bed, which was huge and the best ever; (5) its spa, which gave the best massage ever (but without any queries about existing conditions); (6) the cocktails; and (7) the balcony - but avoid ground floor if you can.

Its disappointments are in its Wi-Fi offering, its layout and in some of the "little things" that should not be an issue in this type of establishment.

Wi-Fi first: many people who come to a hotel that's as expensive as this one need to work at the same time. Unfortunately the Wi-Fi in the rooms was lamentably unreliable: sometimes it worked; sometimes it worked on some devices, but not others; sometimes it didn't work at all. This was frustrating. Fortunately the Wi-Fi in the public areas was more reliable, but was never 100% so. In this type of hotel, it should be reliable all of the time.

Layout next: one of the features of premises where space is not at a premium is often that insufficient thought is given to what fits where. This hotel is one of those. We stayed in room 304 - described as a junior suite - but in practice it was a large room - about 25 square meters - that adjoined a similarly large space, into which had been fitted 4 additional rooms: a toilet, a shower room, a bathroom and a large wardrobe. The wardrobe was undeniably good. But to have 3 additional rooms that could have been fitted into one well designed room would have left space for the bedroom area to have proper seating area - instead of which there were 2 uncomfortable chairs placed at the foot of the bed, but with their matching footstools some 2 metres away - too far for even the most long-legged guest... A sofa would have been a sensible inclusion in a suite.

And now for the little things: a broken bulb on the balcony that made sitting out somewhat gloomy; a missing shower curtain to give privacy to the shower area, which, despite there being a curtain track and having raised the issue with the concierge, wasn't installed; towelling dressing gowns that were so tight as to have been prepared for size 0 models; an air conditioner that was impossible to adjust from 23.5C; and 15 (yes, 15) different light switches, many of which had no obvious function at all; and breakfast that professed to start at 7am, but didn't really get going until about 8am. But the fridge was good and the safe was excellent and included an integral plug for charging phones and other devices.

So many of these things could be resolved by a mystery guest programme or by a member of staff staying in their own hotel, to assess how some parts of the hotel just don't "work". So, overall, and unfortunately, it was an expensive mixed bag.

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

We are very sorry about your past experience at Hotel Naoura Barriere. Please note this is absolutly not in our habit to give such a level of service.

We stayed a week at the Naoura Barriere. We had the aim of using it as a base to do lots of exploring in Marrakech, as it is very well located.

As it transpired, it was so relaxing and enjoyable that we stayed in the hotel for most of the time!

The food is great and half board a good deal when you look at the prices in the restaurant.

Drink is a little expensive but not too bad and the staff can, at times, leave you a long time without coming to check on you once you've been served.

But this is really splitting hairs, as there's little to fault.

We are aiming to return.

We booked a three bedroom Riad - I was too lazy to sort out separate rooms for a family, always a pain on most websites.

It was massive, just massive. Spread over three floors, with its own lift, courtyard and plunge pool. Two living rooms, kitchen (not a kitchenette, a full kitchen).

The main hotel pool was large and heated - nice at this time of year (April).

All very comfortable. Ate at the Restaurant for dinner once and it was fine, as was the breakfast buffet.

Service was generally very good - although be warned English is very definitely a third language for most of the staff here, so there is scope for mis-understanding if your request is not straightforward. Nothing insurmountable.

Booze is expensive - think London restaurant prices and then some, but that seems to go with the territory here.

Location is great, on the edge of the Medina meaning a) you can get to the hotel easily in a cab and b) you can readily walk in to the Medina, to the square etc.

All in all: highly recommended.

Room Tip: The Riads are monster big and very private.

This is a relaxing and very quiet hotel there is no traffic or AC noise.
It is within walking distance of Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa El Fna.
The food is excellent.
The staff were always polite and helpful.
I will definitely return to this hotel on my next visit.

Room Tip: Rooms overlook the pool

We spent 4 nights in a 4 bedroom ryad at the Naoura Barriere and we did not want to leave! Management was kind enough to upgrade us fro our 3 bedroom reservation to a 4 bedroom which was a generous gift. The accommodations were luxurious, the service impeccable and the hotel beautiful. Also, the location is perfect as you are able to walk to the Jemaa el-Fnaa, yet feel completed secluded when at the hotel. The restaurants were great and the breakfast buffet was really nice. I can not wait to return and would not consider staying anywhere else when in Marrakech.

Room Tip: Spurge on the Ryad. It is an experience.

Spent 4 nights in this exceptionally good hotel. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable with wonderful service from every member of staff we came in contact with.
Very pleasant pool area with ample room and facilities.
Taxis in marrakech cost very little however we prefer to walk where possible so you get to see and understand more. Naoura Barriere is perfectly situated for all central points of interest.
We travel worldwide on business and this rates as one of the best hotels we have stayed in in recent years.
Possibly due to the time of year, our balcony never seemed to get any direct sunlight, however that just makes us sound terribly fussy. It's a great place to stay and we thank them for making it so enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask for sun on balcony
