“Riu Tikida Palmeraie”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Riu Tikida Palmeraie
My husband and I spent 11 nights at the resort from 3rd October to 14th October 2014, travelling with Thomson/First Choice.
The flight was good and on time, just a short 3.5 hour flight from Gatwick.
We were met promptly and professionally by the rep and found our way to transfer coaches. Considering there was also a plane just landed from Manchester at the same time everything went smoothly & quickly.
Arrival into the hotels was lovely and the entrance lobby / reception gave a very good first impression as did the friendly staff who offered a welcome drink and ushered us to the dining room where a full selection of meals and drinks was available at 11pm in the evening.
Our room was 4153 some distance from reception etc, but having emailed ahead we were pleased to have received a complimentary bottle of French brut champagne and a room on the first floor.
The room was on the whole okay – regrettably our air con’ didn’t work and despite two requests to reception it was not fixed, however we ‘made do’ with the ceiling fan. Cleanliness was okay but would agree that the some areas are begin to get worn – towels and bed linen for example. The beds too were very hard and probably the worst I have experienced (even with a topper!).
The room was also very noisy on some occasions – you can hear toilets being flushed & furniture scrapping on the floors - if our air con worked I think this would have helped to drown out some of the noise – never mind!
The pool was lovely, yes cold at first, but once you get in it is lovely, clean & refreshing. Lots of activities going on to one side of the pool if you wanted to join in and a pool house where for a small deposit you can hire tennis racket, board games etc. They also have a good library of books to loan at no cost
The food was good; we never got bored, even after 11 nights. We ate at both speciality restaurants and preferred the Italian, maybe not for its food but for the somewhat quieter and more private setting and it was nice to have wine brought to your table rather than grabbing a glass “canteen style” as my Husband put it in the main buffet restaurant.
Alcoholic beverages were fine – certainly large measures of what ever your favourite tipple may be – I had to ask the barmen to make mine ‘small’ as I was struggling a little bit & they were only too happy to oblige and I was soon known by the barmen who remembered how I liked my rum ‘n’ coke!
As previous reviewers have stated all of the staff at the hotel are very professional and friendly. Even the maid who spoke no English was very helpful when we returned from the pool one afternoon to find our key card had stopped working. Tip – do not place your key card in your handbag against your mobile phone or camera as reception informed us this is the reason that the cards stop working.
The shuttle bus into the Old Town was very convenient – even though it broke down twice! Thankfully both times within walking distance of the hotel so not a big problem.
The weather whilst we were there was excellent 28 to 30C each day.
P.S. – You can change your Moroccan money back to £’s at reception before departure despite what the reps tell you!

Room Tip: Choose a first floor room & email ahead to request it.

We have just returned from a wonderful week at the Palmeraie, and can highly recommend it!

Upon arrival, which was quite late at night, around 11.30pm, we were all given a welcome non-alcoholic cocktail, and the hotel had kept the restaurant open for people to eat, a nice touch. After you check in, you are given stickers for your cases, and the porters bring your bags to your room 15 or so mins later. (So grab a bite to eat first, then check in, or wait until after you eat to put the stickers on your bags!) As our return flight was also a late one, we paid a little extra to have a late check out, 6pm instead of 11am. Well worth the £50 / €50 / 500 Dirhams in our opinion!
The hotel is beautiful, and the rooms very large and comfortable. (Beds are a little on the hard side, especially for me, as I like a super soft bed, but they gave us a small mattress topper which did the job. Anyone who likes a bed on the firmer side would love them!) We had ground floor room, with a small, relatively secluded patio area outside. The toilet was separate to the bathroom, and had a bidet in it, which is always a nice novelty!

The grounds are very well maintained, and very well watered, so looked stunning for such a hot country. Very pretty plants and flowers everywhere, many of them lovely and fragrant too.

Everywhere gets cleaned down every day, so all the walkways are spotless, windows bright and sparkly in reception.

Everyone who works there is very friendly, and plenty of staff too, so you never really have to wait at all before someone clears up any plates at the tables in the restaurant, or cups / glasses from the bar or reception.

Food was very good, always a good choice, and very tasty. We didn't use the Italian restaurant, as we can get plenty of that here in the UK, but we did use the Moroccan one. It is quite similar to the Morrocan food in the main restaurant, but on a much smaller scale, so it felt much more intimate, and somehow the food, although basically the same, did seem to taste even better. Drinks were good too, all the soft drinks were Coca Cola branded ones, the alcohol was the usual locally branded generic stuff, but just fine, all the same. The Mojitos were especially good, with fresh mint and limes, they were delicious and refreshing during the day by the pool, and nice at night too! Top tip, if you excuse the pun, is that if you tip the bar staff quite well during your first or second night, and then just one or two small tips on subsequent nights, they really do look after you! Plus having a good laugh and a joke with them goes a long way too! Not saying without tips you get bad service, far from it, as all the staff do a great job, no matter whether they got tips or not, just that the two or three that we did tip quite well, definitely remembered us for the rest of the week, and made sure we were kept well watered! Table service quite often, especially when nearing closing time, to ensure we had enough drinks to keep us going for another hour or so after last orders! But as we say, they are perfectly friendly and efficient even the ones we hadn't tipped. (We tipped the ones who served us the most, as we used 2 of the bars more than the other 2 you see)

Entertainment staff, along with all the staff to be honest, seem to work all the time! Obviously they get breaks, but everyone at the hotel puts in long hours to keep the guests happy! Night time entertainment was pretty good, apart from the karaoke night, which we didn't care much for, as the guests are roughly 45% British, 45% French, plus a few others as well, so half the karaoke singers were singing in French. Karaoke is one of those things where you have to kinda get into to have fun, and know the songs the singers are trying to sing, so when it is a song you don't know at all, in a language that we don't speak, it takes that aspect of it away. Plus having had a really good night the night before, and a really late one at that, didn't help either, as we weren't really up to another late night anyway!

The hotel is almost all non-smoking inside, it used to be fully smoking, but I think due to complaints and comments they have changed it, so people could smoke in the lobby bar, but no-where else. Although the lobby bar is open onto the reception area, we never really smelled any smoke coming through.

You can exchange your money at a reasonable rate at the hotel, without charge, so often people change just small amounts as and when they need it.

There are quite a few cats going around the hotel, but they are very well looked after, food and water is provided for them, and the hotel vaccinates and spays/neuters them as well. Some must get missed in the Spaying/neutering though, as there were a couple of really cute kittens there too, unless they get brought in.

We did a couple excursions there, one to the Waterfalls of Ouzoud in the Atlas Mountains, which was very spectacular. It's a long way, about 200km in the bus, but we are definitely glad we went, as it was beautiful. You stop on the way for the toilet etc, and get lunch included on the way back, plus another natural beauty spot to see afterwards as well on the way home. We also had a night time horse carriage ride through Marrakech too which was nice. Add to that a trip to the Souk one morning using the free hotel shuttle bus (need to book it at reception) and that was all our days out. The rest of the time we chilled out by the pool! Loads of loungers to use, and plenty of shaded areas too, which we needed as the weather was brilliant, one day was overcast all day, but that was the day we went to the Souk, so it was perfect! Another day was half cloud half sun, the other 5 days, brilliant sunshine! Basically 29'C - 30'C (84F - 86F) every day in the shade, nice! Would not like to be there in summer, I think it would be WAY to hot for us! But late September early October, just right for us! Not really anywhere to walk as such, there is a small shop inside the petrol station, and also a Pharmacy and large cash and carry type supermarket about a 10 - 15 minute walk outside the hotel.

Because we live in Scotland, but flew from Manchester, the English school holidays hadn't started when we went, so not many kids around at all, some, but very few, which we liked! HeHe!

A minor point, not that we go on holiday to get on the internet, but in this modern age, everyone seems to expect it. You can get free WiFi in the reception area, but unless you go first thing in the morning, before 8am, or last thing at night, after 11pm, it is practically impossible to connect to the internet. I would prefer to pay a small amount for an hour at a time, but get a good connection, rather than have it free, but never get on.

Morocco itself seems to be quite a poor country, lots of donkeys, and mopeds going around, but Marrakech itself seems quite an expensive place, probably because of the tourists? Although we got a lovely lunch for a very reasonable price in one of the terrace cafes on our day out to the Souk. (On the night time carriage ride, you get taken to a roof terrace cafe for a quick drink, so we actually used that one to eat in)

All in all, a fabulous relaxing holiday, in a wonderful hotel, with wonderful service, and wonderful weather. 2 thumbs up!!

For our annual holiday, the wife and I like to relax in the sun at a good-quality hotel. We don't tend to go out to experience the culture much, as all we are looking for is a relaxing time in a quality environment in a warm place.

And that is what you get here. The hotel staff are fabulous. They go out of their way to help you, are very polite and efficient. The hotel is one of the Riu chain. We like Riu hotels. They are always of a very good standard. All the ones we have been in have been well designed and well-finished.

It's a slightly smaller hotel than your usual resort hotel. But, housing 1000 or so guests is not that small.

The pool is conveniently placed between the rooms and the hotel main building. It is clean, spacious and well-organised. Also, although there is the usual "reserving" of poolside loungers, you will always be able to get a space in a good place. So no need to dash there at 7 am in the morning.

The food is great quality from the main restaurants. The "Italian" themed restaurant wasn't really that Italian looking or tasting - but it was alright. The Moroccan themed restaurant was very good.

We didn't even detect the usual smell of people smoking that you can get in overseas hotels - with the exception of one of the indoor television lounges, which we just avoided.

The rooms were fine. Not big or small. The double bed was two large singles pushed together - but that's alright.

We did go to the markets and souks one day - but they weren't the "cultural" experience that we were expecting. A bit downtrodden, desperate and tacky we thought - so we just headed back to the hotel and didn't go out again. That's what we like anyway.

I used the spa for a body scrub and massage - which was fantastic and would recommend it.

The only downsides were: the hotel rep from the travel company was of very low-quality and performance and the waiting and processing process to get into the country once you get off the plane is staggeringly inefficient and takes hours. I'll say that again. It takes HOURS!

All in all, this was one of the best holiday hotels we have ever been to and I can't recommend it highly enough.

My Wife and I have just had our third holiday at the Riu Tikida Palmeraie, this time we stayed 14 days. The Staff as usaul were very attentive not just for our needs but for others also and also gave a 5 Star service in the dining rooms etc. We spoke with many people who were on their first visit to the Riu Tikida Palmeraie, one question we asked them all, 'Would you come back', 95% said that they would. We are looking forward to going back again next year around the same time of the year, end September for 2 weeks.

Room Tip: Try and get a room near the pool area as the complex is large.

A truly relaxing holiday. A lovely personal touch when introduced to all heads of department who were always available to offer assistance. They were keen to check with you to see if there was any issues you had, which we never did. Staff were all very pleasant and attentive especially with our 2 yr old who was being high 5'ed at every direction! We went to the morroccan restaurant for two nights which was a nice change from the main restaurant as it was on a much smaller scale and it felt more like you were going out for dinner.
A funny thing to comment on but I was very impressed with the high chairs that were always covered in cellophane and looked like they had been sterilized each time ( cleaner than the one we have at home! ) All were in good working order, which is refreshing change.
The spa was lovely and relaxing. The gardens were beautifully kept with very few weeds, they were all green and lush with ponds where ducks and terrapins and fish hung out! All animals looked well cared for including the cats that roamed. On the subject of animals, saw very few creepy craw lies and only had one tiny crocroach in our room all holiday.
Have just thought of one negative- the pool was very very cold, it stopped me from having a swim but apparently according to hubby once you were in it was ok and our little one certainly didn't mind it.
