“A beautiful get away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed 4 nights at Riad Papillon and cannot recommend it highly enough. We stayed in the Jasmine room which was clean, cosy and beautifully presented. The staff at the Riad could not have been more accommodating, from our transfer from the airport, delicious breakfasts served at any time, and fantastic evening meals. Zuhair in particular was incredibly helpful and welcoming. He made a real difference to our stay, recommending places to visit and eat, and generally his hospitality was second to none. Cannot recommend this place enough to anyone looking for a relaxing retreat in the midst of the vibrant medina. Thank you very much Riad Papillon, Zuhair and all the staff. Rowan and Emma.

My wife and I have recently returned from a memorable 3-night stay at Riad Papillon, and would strongly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the centre of the Medina. From the moment we arrived at the Dar el Bacha taxi drop off point and met by Abdel, to the moment he escorted us back to be transferred to the airport to head home we felt thoroughly well looked after.

It was our first time in Marrakech and we decided we wanted to experience Marrakech in all its craziness by staying in the Medina and not in the more Westernised hotels in the new town. We chose the Marrakech Riad group as they are Uk owned and have fully English speaking staff, thinking that it would make it that bit easier to get comfortable and get our bearings in what could potentially be quite a daunting city. From the moment we arrived Abdel and the other staff did everything possible to make us feel comfortable and at home, giving us map and telling us exactly where all the best places and routes around the Medina were, and giving us a mobile phone for us to contact him if we got lost (which fortunately we never had to use!).

We had the Hibiscus room, which was beautifully decorated, with a nice comfy bed, strong air-con, satellite TV, big bathroom with a double shower, robes, toilettries, and a fridge and safe in the closet - in short everything you would expect in a modern, high spec hotel but all in a genuinely traditional feeling and characterful old building. The central courtyard with plunge pool, the living room with sofas, and the roof terrace with Berber tent for having your meals were all exactly as depicted in the pictures on the website - really elegant and classy.

The breakfasts served in the tent on the rooftop were fresh, plentiful and very tasty. We also had a three course dinner on one of the nights, which was more like a feast(!), which included both a chicken and a lamb tajine, mixed vegetable starters, and a lovely apple and cinnamon pastry with fruit basket for dessert. Far too much food for two people in truth, but we weren't complaining as it all tasted fantastic!

Sadly on my final night I fell victim to a nasty bout of food poisoning (nothing to do with any of the food I had at the Riad I hasten to add!). Abdel and Abdou both went absolutely out of their way to try and help me, running out to the local pharmacy to get medicines and offering to bring a local doctor etc. We were also allowed to stay in the Riad beyond the 11am check out time free of charge to wait for my transfer to the airport as I was still very unwell, which was very generous of them.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Riad Papillon, or any of the other Marrakech Riad properties, to anyone looking to experience all the excitement and colour of the Medina without sacrificing any of the creature comforts and facilities you would expect from modern luxury hotel.

Highly recommended. My partner and I visited Marrakech for our fourth visit on business/pleasure having stayed outside the medina previously and we felt that our experience at Riad Papillon was far superior to any of the previous lodgings where we stayed (although at the time we were more than happy with these experiences). What did we like about Papillon? Firstly the location-it is in the best part of central Marrakech and real easy to find. It is very quiet even though it is surrounded by Moroccan houses and other hotels. Secondly the food is by far the best we have ever had in Marrakech. We got to choose all our dishes-and were able to try a vegetarian pastille and a lamb tangia which (at our request) we helped to prepare and took to the local hammam where it baked for 6 hours! It was totally incredible. Thirdly the staff were awesome. Yassine is the nicest guy you could hope to meet and he looked after everything for us. When he wasn't around then Zoohar looked after us real well also carrying our heavy bags up and down the stairs without us asking and spending hours answering our many questions about the souks and the Moroccan culture. The cleaning staff were amazing-charming, discrete but always smiling and helpful-spotlessly clean. Lastly we loved our room. All of the rooms are on the slim side (traditional moroccan shape) but we had everything we needed and the colours were dreamy and romantic. The jasmine oils in the bathroom were relaxing and the sculpted tile tree of life was exquisite.
Our only complaint was that there were rose petals on the bed every night and (although it was a beautiful and a romantic touch) we had to pick them off the bed every night. The bedding was extremely good quality smooth and soft. The pillow was silky smooth and soft-unusual to find outside of the states in my experience-excellent sleep experience.
We will be back again to our adopted second home in Morocco and couldn't even consider going anywhere else after the care that was taken of us. Recommend for romantic stays or groups of ladies.

Room Tip: We were tempted by the rose room because it has an extra sofa giving you a bit more room. However we...

The Riad is beautiful, staff very friendly, and the meal we pre-ordered for our arrival there was absolutely delicious. The breakfasts were great too, and the advice we received about where to go in Marrakech was excellent. it's a stunning place to stay, I would highly recommend it, especially as they have an airport transfer service incase you're a little worried about how to travel from Marrakech airport to the riad (and the tiny streets of Marrakech can be very confusing!)

My only fault is that I had to cut my trip short and thus leave a day earlier than intended, and although I had paid for a return airport transfer, I was charged for being transferred to the airport a day early. I can understand that it was maybe a bit short notice but would have thought that at the prices we were paying for our stay (and food etc), my transfer would have been valid for having to travel back to the airport earlier than intended.

While everything at this riad was brilliant the helpfulness of the staff was the best I've ever experienced. They really went above and beyond what was expected of them, with everything from directions to telling us how much we should be paying for things. The rooms were excellent and food is delicious.

I stayed in this Riad with my boyfriend for 4 nights. The staff are extremely helpful and because the Riad is staffed 24/7 there is always someone to answer your questions. We were welcomed with a lovely meal of Lamb Tagine cooked by one of the ladies. I would highly recommend this if you land late in the evening, as we did. We were provided with a mobile in case we got lost in the souks, however we never needed to use it. Overall I would highly recommend this beautiful, clean Riad located in a tranquil central location.

We stayed at Riad Papillon for 3 lovely nights during June. We were met at the airport as requested and driven to the Riad. Yassim (apologies if the spelling is incorrect) greeted us off the taxi with a warm welcome and a smile. As we walked the short distance taking in the sights, smells etc we wondered where we were going but when the front door was opnend we instantly loved it. Nothing was too much trouble, the rooms had everything we needed, all of the staff were very friendly, Yassim in particular, gave us lots of information. Overall, it was in a great location - a great base to begin exploring.
