“hidden gem in Marrakech”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014

Just came back from Marrakech where I had a 4 night stay in La Porte Rouge. Already read on tripadvisor that this riad has an excellent recommendation by other travellers and I must say ... they were right! The staff gives you a warm welcome with tea and cookies, a guidance through the riad and a detailed route you can follow to explore the old city of Marrakech.
The riad is situated at the edge of the medina, no worries ... only 15 minute walk of Jemaa-el-Fna, the main square of Marrakech.

Every day we had breakfast on the roofterrace (a quiet place in the sun) which included 3 different specialities. Great way to discover what locals eat. In the evening you can eat at this riad, you are not obliged to eat outside. And I must say we had the couscous royal ... the portion was enormous ... but delicious :-)
They offer various excursions outside Marrakech and follow up the service of these excursions.

Marrakech is a busy city and the roofterrace is an excellent place to escape of it all: jacuzzi, sunbathing, massages, ... everything you need to relax is offered in this riad. Especially the massage is a must! Choose the 1-hour-massage ... you won't regret it!

Conclusion: this riad is a gem in Marrakech, very friendly staff, excellent service, great food, ... I will definitely return to Marrakech and this riad! Thank you Karen and your staff to make our stay wonderfull!

Room Tip: we had room Narjisse for 2 people: a bit too small but clean, also at the ground floor near the kitc...

I just returned from a 4 night stay at this wonderful riad and i had the best time!
From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, every person working there is superfriendly, welcoming and so attentive! The service is what makes this place so outstanding!

We stayed in the Narjisse room, a very small but cosy room with all the comfort needed for a nice stay. The room is situated on the ground floor near the kitchen and the dining/breakfast area so for people sensitive to noices for sleeping, best bring earplugs. We both slept without, falling fast a sleep in the comfy beds after an active day! ;)

The breakfast on the rooftop terrace was to our taste and every morning something different! I missed more fruit with my breakfast but that's a personal taste. The freshly squized orange juice made up for that! :)

The location is in the south of the medina, near the Royal Palace, about 20 minutes by foot to Djmaa El Fna. And if you're to tired to walk back after all the slow pace walking through the souks ;), just stop a taxi and ask to bring you to Bab (gate) Hmar, very close to the riad.
It is true what i read on the forums though, try to stop an older men driving a taxi, they're far less pushy then the young men and correct in their pricing. To give you an idea of the pricing:
* Bab Hmar - Jardins Majorelle: DRH 40
* Bab Hmar - Djmaa El Fna: DRH 20
In the night, taxi's are more expensive. Do try discussing the price, it's typical Marrakech and it's a good excercise when buying something you need/want! :)

The massage they offer (Touria) is "out of this world, sensationaly good" !!! Best massage of my life so my advice to you all: go for the 1h massage, you'll not be sorry!!

We had 1 dinner there and wauw -again- ! Royal Couscous is soooo jammy but when they say "royal" in Marrakech (and definitly in this riad), don't feel to bad after finishing and seeing no change to the plate... :D You'll not be the only ones!

I'll definitly return to this gem when back in Marrakech and i will recommend it to my friends!

We were greeted with a lovely glass of local tea, cakes and really friendly staff who could not do enough to help us. Lovely roof terrace breakfasts, ambiance and very quiet. Would definitely recommend people to book. Not the closest to town but a nice walk.

We had a really wonderful weeks holiday based at this Riad. The standard of service was second to none, the staff do not find anything too much trouble and they are all so friendly and helpful. The Riad allowed us to get a taste of traditional Morrocco , amazing rooms and courtyard and rooftop gardens. The walk into the main square takes about 15- 20 mins , it's busy with mopeds etc I must mention the fantastic homemade breakfasts which were different every day , and the tagine we ate several evenings were delicious too, stay here, you won't be disappointed . Thanks so much to Madame and all of the wonderful staff .

We stayed for 2 nights at this lovely little riad, which has gorgeous furniture and objects everywhere you look. There is a picturesque roof terrace complete with hot tub, Berber tent and views of the Atlas mountains.

Karen the owner, her staff and the resident cat were all were welcoming. Karen even gave us a lift to Place des Ferblantiers on our first night as well as kindly loaning us some money.

We really would have liked to spend more time relaxing in the riad but had a long 'To do' list to get through. A good excuse to go back though.

We arrived quite late and bedraggled after climbing Mount Toubkal and the staff at this riad were extremely helpful and pleasant, we were given some lovely cakes and mint tea on arrival and a tour of the riad. The room was nicely presented and we had breakfast on the terrace. This Riad is at the most southern part of the walled part of Marrekesh, but the main square is only a 15 minute walk away and it is well located for the tombs and palace, the staff even gave us a map and pointed out the attractions that we wanted to visit.
The staff were also really helpful on our last day, allowing us to leave our luggage and smelly walking boots there while we carried on sight seeing and arranging a last minute transfer for us wasn't a problem for them either.

My boyfriend and I were very impressed with this beautiful riad. Upon arrival, we were given refreshing mint tea and mini cakes and there were fresh oranges waiting for us in our room and rose petals scattered everywhere! The riad is tucked away in a quiet spot, but be aware that it is very close to a mosque so you may be woken rather early by the call to prayer. We did not find this to be a problem at all and enjoyed hearing it. My only very small gripes about the room are that, firstly, we did not get fresh towels every day and as it wasn’t very warm they were damp for most of our stay. Secondly, we were on the ground floor, right off the courtyard, which did mean there was a bit of noise from other guests and we felt that we could perhaps be overheard in the bathroom, but this is to be expected when staying in a traditional riad!

We found the staff to be incredibly helpful, friendly and always available. They organised our transfers for us, which ran like clockwork. We had bed and breakfast, which was served whenever and wherever we asked for it. It was different every day and truly delicious. You are able to eat in the dining room/lounge, in the central courtyard or up on the roof terrace, which is a lovely suntrap. We ate one evening meal in the riad, which was all homemade and authentic Moroccan cuisine.

The only possible downside of Riad la Porte Rouge is the location. It is a little way from the central medina and this does mean a bit of a walk. There are basically no pavements and you walk past numerous stall holders who will hassle to try and sell you things and I did find this a little bothersome. Also, the temperature during our visit was just about perfect, but I can imagine that this walk would not be enjoyable in the height of summer.

Overall, I would recommend Riad la Porte Rouge to anyway who would like to stay somewhere traditionally Moroccan, with wonderful staff and delicious breakfasts!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms may be a little quieter than those on the ground floor.
