“An indulgent delight!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2011

Mohamed and Alli on reception were fantastic, speaking great English, helping us find our way about, printing out maps, recommending things to see and do. We couldn't fault them. The room we booked (the Ali Baba room) was much smaller than we'd expected and since this was a rare "once in 5 years break without the kids" we wanted to feel like we were living it up. We got upgraded to a much bigger room free of charge and even had a personal meeting with the Riad owner who gave us a lift in to Marrakech to show his sincere apologies!
It is a bit far out of town (13km), but we loved it. We soon mastered travelling on the bus with the locals (the Riad give you a free pass - but obviously a taxi is always an option but about 25 Euros) using my school boy French. It was nice to hang around with locals who had nothing to gain from treating us well, and yet they were really friendly and funny - laughing at our foolish Western behaviour!
Like all Riads the breakfast is pretty much the same every morning, but it is substantial and sets you up for the day. The pool is lovely (heated) as is the hot tub spa.
For a place to get away, explore another culture and spoil yourself, this place is great. It's a bit pricey to eat there in the evenings (25 Euros each), but if you're on a holiday like this it's a nice indulgence. Eating in town is more like 10 Euros each so you can alternate if trying to keep to a budget.
Would definitely recommend this place - we had a great Christmas there!

This was our second trip to Marrakech but our first as a family (18 month old and 3 1/2 year old). First time round we stayed in the Medina, but as we travelled with kids this time, far better to stay outside the medina. Cooler, plus swimming pool etc.

We had a fabulous stay, 4 nights, at the hotel. Hospitality was attentive and very good - a little French goes a long way! Rooms were good sized. Swimming pool allowed us spend 2 great days with kids, enjoy lunch by the pool and then an afternoon/early evening in Marrakech. Clearly a boutique hotel and lots of couples, but if your kids are reasonably well behaved then they'll be very well received.

Food was fab, although if you stay more that 3 nights recommend eating in Marrakech for a change and perhaps a lighter meal.

Overall a great stay and will return. A la prochaine.

We were at Dar Ilham for a short one-day stay and found it tremendously relaxing and mellow. Some highlights of Dar Ilham are the patio and outdoor pool (see attached photo): the pool is heated through the winter and the weather is cool but not so cold one cannot hang out by the pool or take a dip in the pool. Dar Ilham also seems to be quite kid-friendly - we saw 2 or 3 families with young children there at the same time we were there and the kids seemed to enjoy themselves. The rooms are decorated with Moroccan charm, yet comfortable - we stayed in the Zagora room, which had a bath tub AND a separate hot shower, and comfie white sheets and good pillows (most riads tend to have pretty flat pillows, so we were really happy to find the pillows here to be more substantial, so to speak). The food was good, and the staff polite and attentive. The owner, Alain, is fairly hands-on in the day-to-day management of Dar Ilham, and it shows in the service of his staff. Highly recommend Dar Ilham for those that want a break from the madness of the medina or are looking for kid-friendly space that is still retains a sense of authenticity.

Just returned from a wonderful 7 day stay at the riad. It was all the best reviews say it is and more. Having read several negative reviews I feel it is important for travellers to recognise the riad /kasbah is not pretending to be a 5 star international hotel nor to cater for people who want to travel to Morrocco (a developing African country) but eat , sleep, watch Sky, shower and tweet like they do at home in northern europe - and don't bring your kids if they can only digest pasta and must watch telly. ...the riad /Kasbah is a wonderful getaway place for people who enjoy new and different tastes in food, culture, language, art and architecture. The staff are great, desire to please, the rooms beautiful, the gardens are marvellous- full of surprises- not just palms but also pomegranite hedges and topiaried orange trees which delight the flocks of small birds. The guest house compound is set in desert lfields, there is a village nearby -10minutes walk, full of friendly kids, living in poverty but happy to exchange a few words of greeting in french on their way home from school. The local Saturday market makes an interesting morning's excursion, fruit and veg in abundance, real organic foodstuffs, and many other stalls typical of developing countries: phone chargers, westerners' clothing castoffs, goods made from car tyres, etc. and again curious but friendly locals.

Dhar Ilham is everything we could ever expect of a 5 star boutique hotel in Morocco. It was a heavenly retreat from the "hussle" of Marrrakech for our romantic week.
A beautifully designed Moroccan villa, the rooms are authentically designed with candle lit mood lighting throughout providing a more intimate feel for the evenings.

The setting is still in a developing vicinity near to the Office of the Royal Gendarmerie and very local Saturday market, providing us with a real feel of Marrakech and not some urbane franchised hotel in a trendy setting.

Staff are incredibly welcoming, nothing seemed too much to ask for.We made special requests for breakfasts which was catered for without question. We arrived late one night and were surprised to be served a 3 course meal at 11pm which was most welcome.

For us Dhar Ilham is a well designed Moroccan style villa, with beautifully decorated rooms, at times it had a palatial feel, probably because of the way staff made us feel.

We particularly enjoyed the open wood fire for the late December evenings, large swimming pool and great Moroccan cuisine for our evening meals. Our suite had a balcony and looked out over the swimming pool, manicured gardens with some great views of the Atlas mountains.

We did not mind the journey by taxi each day to the Medina, the quality of our experience at Dhar Ilham far outweighed the cost of a daily return taxi ride.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we are thinking of booking the whole place next year including the Riad next door for friends and family .

We stayed for 8 nights in November as we wanted somewhere to relax with guarenteed sunshine without a long haul flight. Having been in the centre of Marrakesh for 5 nights prior to coming to Dar Ihlam, it was something of a shock as we drove out to the Riad. It is in the middle of nowhere and its difficult to imagine how nice the Riad is until you get through the walls of the complex.

We stayed at the Riad (as oppose to the Kasbah) and had a wonderfully large suite overlooking the gardens. Staff were friendly and helpful but it did feel a little like the Riad was a little neglected for service as one at least one night there was only ourselves staying there so focus was on caring for the guests in the Kasbah.

Pool at the Kasbah much better as larger & heated so if you are booking Riad check that the Kasbah isn't rented out for private party with exclusive use of facilities as you may end up with a very cool dip!

Hanman was really good and is sited at the bottom of the garden.

Food was good and it is possible to get a taxi into Marrakesh if you want a wider choice of place / food. They also arranged for a cookery course for us which was a fun day out

All in all it was a good location for chilling out
