“Our wedding at Dar Ilham”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2010

We had organised our wedding at Dar Ilham, and it went really well. All the staff were very friendly and helped make everything run smoothly and helped with any requirements we needed up until the last minute. The hotel itself is beautiful and was the perfect place for our wedding.
Definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a beautiful hotel, in a quiet location, looking to relax and be taken cake of by the friendly staff at the hotel.

We were welcomed warmly and told that even though we missed lunch, they would have a fresh meal ready in 30 minutes. Not only did they make good on that offer, it was the best food we'd had, coming at the end of a European vacation. They gave us great advice on tours and entertainment in the city and we all enjoyed wonderful spa treatments. Our room was spacious and comfortable.

My husband and I spent 6 nights at the Riad Dar Illham and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious although a little too much sometimes and the staff made the dining area by the poolside very special particularly in the evenings with the candlelight. The room was kept very clean and the staff were most helpful in organising taxis to the medina, Atlas Mountains and various restaurants. I highly recommend the 4 day package with the masseuse - it was one of the best massages I've ever had. The only drawback was the riad's location in that we found it a little far from the centre (about 25 mins each way in taxi) which was quite expensive after 5 days. I would definitely recommend this riad to anyone wishing to stay in a typically Morrocan style hotel with great service.

The staff was amazing in taking care of our whole trip, arranging camel rides, a walking tour of the marketplace and transportation everywhere. The food was unbelievable. We ate all our meals there and even our picky, young teenager tasted and loved every dish, some of which were unfamiliar. The desserts were indescribable.

We spent a fabulous three days at the hotel. We had one lunch and one dinner, and the food was the best we had during our trip. My mum had a massage and I think the therapist was a phisio therapist. She described it as the best massage she has ever had. The staff couldnt do enough for us, which made up for the location not being as close to the medina as we would have liked. I would like to go back to the hotel with my children s the pool area was lovely, which you rarely get in Marrakesh. This is my third trip to Morroco and it certainly lived up to the very high standards, especially in terms of customer care.

Staid here in February 2010 with family with young kids. I booked this hotel because most other ones had a disproportionate number of negative reviews and Dar Ilham was rated nr 1 on Tripadvisor. In addition, we wanted to stay at a more traditional Moroccan place and indeed this Kasbah is beautifully decorated with a lot of care to detail.

THE POSITIVES:

Owner truly understands that customer satisfaction and service are vital to the long term future of any hotel and any problems were quickly addressed and fixed during our stay. The concierge and all other staff are very helpful and polite. The cleaning of our room was done with a lot of care and attention to detail. The pool is heated (using airsource heatpumps, very environmentally friendly) to a nice temperature, the jacuzzi is pleasant and gardens nicely landscaped. Breakfast is very comprehensive with some of the best freshly squeezed orange juice that I have ever tasted. The location is 20 minutes from Marrakech centre, which is great for peace and tranquility (the prayers at 05:30 in the morning mentioned in a review are really too far and faint to be an issue). At night they put lit candles on the stairs to the rooms, very nice!

WEAKNESSES/ THINGS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED:

For families with kids, the DVD collection they can watch in the relaxation area and board games available are great but the hotel could do with a little more outside entertainment for kids. Of course, this is not the type of place you'd want to have hoards of kids running around crazy, but a simple swing, slide or perhaps a sandpit would have been a handy distraction.

We had rented a car, so no real problem with transport as it is a 15-20 minute ride into town although traffic and parking could be challenging. Without your own transport, you rely on pre-booked taxis, which is no real problem as long as you are aware of the hotel's location before you book. There are plenty of excursions you can book as well.

Lunch and dinner offer good value but certainly have their price tag (18 and 25 euros). They are of high quality and are very big and comprehensive. This is great, but there is no way you could have breakfast, shortly followed by lunch and then dinner at night. The times were also too inflexible for our taste, especially with kids (latest lunch 2pm, earliest dinner 7pm). They should either increase flexibility or offer a lighter, simpler and more inexpensive hot lunch option. You can order snacks, but that's just crips and olives.

The Sofa bed is not very comfortable, but the main bed was good (personally I would prefer a duvet instead of blankets), so not a problem if you don't need to use the sofa. \

Internet access is very slow.

OTHER USEFUL INFO:

We went skiing for the afternoon in the Atlas mountains (almost 2 hr drive), which was OK but nothing like the Alps. There are 2 lifts, first chairlift goes to top (very dangerous to get off with little snow cover as you are not wearing your skis yet) with drag lift on the other side with beginner's pistes. Get your ski equipment from a proper outfit, not the guys near the lifts as the equipment is worn and they have no way of adjusting the bindings to your weight and height. Beautiful views though and quite an experience.

We spent four days at the Kasbah dar Ilham in February and it rained most of the time. It could have been a disastrous holiday but we enjoyed ourselves, and a large part of this was thanks to the excellent service and charm of the Kasbah. Delicious food, all freshly cooked and served by the charming Malika who has a degree in classical Arabic. They lit a fire in the sitting room where we lounged around on velvet cushions and it was all very warm and cosy. The owners' cat, the redoubtable Minouche, kept my children amused for hours.

You have to budget 200DH a day to get in and out of Marrakech, but I'd much rather do that than stay in a noisier, more cramped and probably more expensive hotel in the town centre. The taxi drivers were all very amenable and seemed to appear like magic to pick us up.

Hope to go back one day and find the sun shining!
