“Luxury retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

We stayed at Dar Ilham for three nights in April 2015, looking for somewhere primarily to read, relax and lie in the sun but also close enough to Marrakech for the odd few hours in the city centre. For this sort of holiday, the hotel was ideal.

Our room was one of the best we have every stayed in. Lovely large bed, a balcony looking over the pool and a beautiful bathroom complete with a separate bath and shower. There is also a television which you can play DVDs through, although the discs are slightly unreliable.

The swimming pool area is fantastic - lots of sunbeds, lots of space and a jacuzi nearby for cloudy days. I'm not sure if the pool was heated but it was warmer than another hotel we stayed in and very comfortable to swim in.

There is a lovely area of tables just between the hotel and pool where you can have dinner and breakfast. We preferred this area to the restaurant inside, which we felt was a bit quiet, small and lacking in atmosphere. The food was excellent. Breakfasts included a selection of breads and pancakes served with various spreads and fresh orange juice or tea. Lunch was less spectacular but fine, with a choice of salads and sandwiches at a resonable price of 80-110 dirhams. Dinner was very nice, we worked our way through the handful of tagines on offer during our stay and all were lovely. Again mains cost around 110 dirhams, which is pretty reasonable.

The service at the hotel was slightly curious. Everyone was extremely polite, friendly and happy to help whenever possible but we couldn't help feeling they were all slightly nervous. There wasn't the same confidence and proactiveness we experienced at our second hotel. That said we certainly couldn't complain, all the staff were very sweet and ready to help.

It is true the hotel is slightly plonked in the middle of nowhere. If you want to walk out the door and be in the city centre every day, it's probably not for you. We only wanted to dip in and out of Marrakech and for this the shuttle bus more than sufficed. It leaves the hotel at 11am and there is a return journey from the medina at 6pm. Although I think the times were flexible, depending on other guests. We booked a second hotel closer to the city for the second part of our week but we probably needn't have worried, Dar Ilham is close enough for occasional visits.

Overall we loved this hotel. The outside area - swimming pool, garden and pateo - was its biggest strength and made for a very relaxing few days in the sun. Would happily return.

I stayed here for 4 nights with my 2 children and we had a great time. The swimming pool is big, warm and clean set in a beautiful garden. It is a distance from the medina, but the shuttle bus is great and they are very accommodating about pick up times. We had a beautiful room over looking the swimming pool with a fantastic smell of sweet jasmin outside. They organised for us to go camel riding and helped arrange how to get to our next destination - nothing was too much trouble. The other guests were all very friendly as well and I think it is because there is such a great atmosphere there. I would definitely stay here again

Stayed here for two nights in feb 2014. It was a great pleasure, the villa is very nice, friendly and helpful staff, and has a great cook :) The room overlooking the pool was comfy and clean. It is not a Four Seasons kind of 5-star but definitely very relaxing and luxurious on the laid-back kind of way.

Transport to and from Medina/Marrakech need to be arranged by the staff, very easy and not that expensive. When going back from the town, only go with the "big/old" taxis as these are the only ones having permits driving outside the city, otherwise you will end up left behind at some gas station.

This is a hotel full of contradictions. The hotel is located approx 25 minutes from the Medina but with a free shuttle this is not a problem. The hotel and pool areas are absolutely spotless and the service is friendly and good. The plumbing in our room needs some serious updating and at the reception I kept expecting Basil Fawlty to appear. Despite these observations for some reason I can't explain I would certainly stay there again!

Just returned from a seven day vacation in Marrakech. After reading the many positive review we decided on Hotel Kasbah Dar IIham and to summarize we made the right choice. Lovely hotel in a quiet location with outstanding staff. Thanks to Aziz, Abdullatif, Jihad, Khadija and the other hard working and extremely pleasant and friendly staff for making our vacation a relaxing and enjoyable time.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2015

My daughter and I stayed here for four nights. The small hotel has just 8 rooms and it is half an hours drive from the centre of Marrakesh in quiet surroundings. There are some lovely relaxing rooms and the large outdoor heated pool is clearly an attraction especially on warm days.

Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was good.

I cannot give a 5 star rating, however, as there are several needs for improvements:

* On several occasions there was no water hot or cold in our room twice when coming in cold from the pool.
* The twin room we had needed a few more basic things as one would expect from a hotel at this level: a waste paper bin, a chair or a stool and somewhere to hand bath towels not just a hand towel.
* Some things are over priced especially the tour trips that can be arranged by the Kasbah, We were able to arrange the same trips for half the price from an agent in central Marrakesh and we were still picked up and returned to the hotel.
* Finally we were given a complimentary drive back to the airport, We were told this would take half an hour and worked out times accordingly. After that it was decided to do the journey via central Marrakesh in the middle of the rush hour to drop a family off for sight seeing. This meant that it took at least an hour to get to the airport and it was stressful wondering whether we would get there in time.Surely going to the airport must come before sightseeing or time should at least be allowed for the diversion especially at busy times.

We a few upgrades at the hotel, however, it could indeed be an outstanding place to stay.

Let me start by thanking the lovely staff, all of them with no exceptions! all those who we met we very nice, very helpful and and always happy to help, so thank you for making our stay so nice (Aziz, Abdullatif, Jihad the driver, Khadija and her colleagues). We had booked two rooms, initially in the Riad, but after one night we moved to the Kasaba, on a B&B basis. The breakfast is basic traditional Moroccan, but was good enough to start the day. The best thing about the breakfast was the fresh orange juice. The food in general is not Morocco's strong side, which was reflected throughout the week we spent in Marrakech. The place itself is about 30 minutes from the city, although this can be a good thing as it provides some quiet atmosphere, but on the negative side there is no shops or restaurants nearby. You are simply trapped. In all of the hotels or B&B I stayed, a kitle, coffee bags and tea bags are provided as a standard item in the rooms, in this place there isn't and you will have to pay for any tea or coffee. I read that some gusts were offered a welcome tea, we have not been offered any welcome tea. Although the hotel provides free of charge pick ups and drop offs from and to the hotel/city, this option is available only once at 11am from the hotel and 6pm from the city, any other time is charged. For those who stay 2-3 nights, not a major issue, but for us who stayed a whole week with two rooms that after a discount cost us over a £1,000, we were expecting some gestures of good will. I understand that the staff is restricted to a certain rules, so I have no criticism against them whatsoever.
The rooms were ok, good night sleep (not in the first night in the Riad), but the rest of week was ok. The swimming pool, although a bit heated, the water was cold. I did not dare swimming, the kids had a one or two goes. Apart of that, the swimming pool is a very good size and I am sure in spring and summer times it can be great.
The bathrooms are basic and a bit old, but clean.
If you ask me whether I will stay again in the Kasbah Dar Ilham, sadly my answer is no.
