“Beautiful Riad - Wonderful Staff - Wonderful Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

My partner and I recently spent 7 nights at the Riad Assakina. The Riad itself is a beautifully rebuilt and restored building and wonderfully decorated - interior design is fabulous - Michele the owner sources real craftsmen and has all the lights etc made specifically for the Riad. Our room was beautiful and very comfortable. When we pulled up outside - we had no idea of the wonderful surprise that we would find behind the wrought iron gate which surrounds the front door, A huge welcoming smile from Hakim - who brought up a most welcome mint tea. The Riad is conveniently situated to the shops, palaces, and restaurants of the Medina. Afternoon tea and home made cake is provided between 4-5 which is very welcome after a day of bartering! The staff are absolutely wonderful - make you feel really welcome and their customer service is superb - so thank you to all of you - Hitchim, Hakim,Mereim, Naoual, Ibissam and Majouba and to the lovely owner Michele. We have recommended the Riad to our friends and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are lovely - as a special treat you can upgrade to a suite - very large rooms on th...

We enjoyed a wonderful 4 night stay and fabulous hospitality at Riad Assakina, which allowed us a real introduction to Marrakech.

We felt very lucky to have stayed in such a beautiful property, we wanted for nothing and cannot think of any suggestions to improve the guest’s experience – Grant and Michele have thought of everything.

The attention to detail encompasses everything you could wish for, from the design of Riad Assakina, (the roof terrace was a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing) through to the service and conversation from every staff member we encountered, and the tasty breakfasts and tapas we enjoyed.

The location was within 5 minutes walk to fabulous, not to be missed, sites - Bahia Palace and Badi Palace; spice and jewellery souks; along with a couple of great restaurants (both memorable for separate reasons: belly dancers / roof terrace). The main square and main souks are only a 15 minute saunter away (even with a broken foot!!).

We were completely relaxed after our couple's Hammam, rose bath and massage which Michele organised on our behalf - what an experience!

Michele's advice on what to see, where to go, her suggested cost of items we were interested in buying along with fabulous restaurant choices, allowed us a holiday to remember.

Room Tip: We were upgraded to a suite for 2 nights of our stay - Kaid was definitely worth stretching your bud...

We spent 3 nights here, and this was one of the highlights of our trip to Marrakech.

The Riad is wonderfully decorated, very clean, very comfortable, and very quiet (the exact opposite of what is outside the door). But, the absolute best part of staying here was the fabulous staff. All of them were fantastic, courteous, always smiling and willing to help. I wanted to take them home with me. On arrival Noual brought us mint tea and walnut stuffed dates. She provided maps, answered our questions, and showed us around. The staff set up dinner reservations for us, booked our excursion and hamman, called us taxis, and were always around when we needed them. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful, and we always looked forward to afternoon tea and cake on the fabulous rooftop terrace (great views). The dinner we had at the Riad on our last night was truly special, and it was easily the best meal we had in Marrakech.

The rooms are lovely. Ours even had a little sitting area. Filtered water for drinking is supplied free of charge everyday. There is an AC/Heater wall unit (which, of course, makes some noise), Free WIFI, TV, and a huge manual in the room containing a ton of very useful information. Our bathroom was large, with an additional space heater. It had two sinks and a big shower - we never ran out of hot water. Drains were a little slow, but not that bad. The bed was very comfortable and we had luxurious sheets & pillows.

The location was perfect for us. It was close to some very good restaurants, and most of the best tourist attractions. It was also close (yet far enough away) from the main square and souks (10-15 minute walk). It's located in an interesting neighborhood (this Riad also has a very interesting history).

Overall, we really enjoyed our time at this Riad, and we wouldn't hesitate to return here.

Beautifully rebuilt and restored Riad..absolutely done in the best taste. Location is very good just a few blocks to Jmaa al Fna, shops and restaurants of the Medina..All the staff was well trained and courteous with Noel who speaks English really shining. owner Michel was lovely, she also has a shop on the premises which offers some items found in the Riad and some gifts, shoes and clothes. The place was very secure and quiet. The one issue I had is that in our suite the king bed was right on the floor which was raised via a couple of stairs. If you are a senior...getting up out of bed is a bit difficult. I noticed two other rooms that did not have the issue. also the safe was on the floor and hard to get at. All said and done I highly recommend it.

This Riad is truly an oasis of calm amidst the chaos of the city. The hospitality of the hosts and the whole team is outstanding. The accommodation and outside space is of a very high standard and even though we ate at some of the best restaurants the meal we had in house at the Riad was by far the best of the trip.

Having done quite a bit of research before booking this trip, Riad Assakina seems to us like one of the very best riads in town. With great value for money, all the comforts of home, and a location very close to many of the main sights in the medina, it made for an amazing 3-night-stay and we would always come back.

Positive & noteworthy:

- Owners (Michele & Grant from Britain) & staff: extremely friendly and helpful, even before the stay via email. Great knowledge of the city!
- Design and ambiance: detailed and tasteful, luxurious but authentic. Altogether great rooms & hotel facilities!
- Breakfast: not only Moroccan sweets, but also eggs, fruit salads, etc., plus complementary afternoon tea and freshly baked cake
- Free wifi, TV, A/C, heating, ...
- Boutique with Moroccan-inspired high quality designs (clothes, accessories, home decor) made by Michele (better than the touristy things in the souks!)

Room Tip: The suites on the first floor are the best and very spacious. Our favorite was Suite "Kaid"...

When ordering, for some reason through booking.com (better options are to order directly at their website), we immediately got a friendly and informative e-mail, and arranged for pick-up at the airport. Some days before our stay we again received an e-mail, and were informed that due to unforeseen events the hosts would not be there during our stay, but that the Moroccan staff would take good care of us: and so they did. From our arrival till we left, the friendly and personal service was fantastic from Naoual and the others, and behind the scenes cooking and cleaning took place - everything was tidy, clean and food held a very high standard. We had one dinner in-house - and it was the best we had in Marrakesh. We had other dinners at recommended restaurants - but somehow this food was better prepared and presented.

We had a lot of help in what to do and see: We went one day with a driver to the Ourika valley, we spent half a day in les Bains des Marrakech all as suggested and arranged by the staff. Aside from that, many sights are nearby. After some long walks, we understood that taxi is cheap and if you ask for one at the Riad, you get a good driver.

Our room was, in line with the rest of the riad, beautiful. Beds were good, bath fine (no thermostatic mixing valves, but then it would not have looked so nice) . There was a TV there - we did not use it - and unplugging it gave us some extra power sockets :) There are not many of them, so be prepared if you as we travel with two computers, three cameras and two cellphones that need simultaneous charging. (However, I am sure that if I had mentioned it, the staff would have fixed it). Also - our room did not have much place for working - but then there are numerous spots around the riad to sit - and the wi-fi internet connection works everywhere I tried, also on the lovely roof terrace.

In summary: This was better than our expectations, thanks to the personal service, friendly atmosphere and great food.
