“The ideal place to stay in Marrakech”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

We have just spent four fantastic nights as the guests of Grant and Michele and their team at Riad Assakina. They all, without exception, made us extremely welcome and, with their freely given advice and insight into the local sights, customs, restaurants and even the hastily postponed clock changes helped us really get the best of our stay in this incredibly interesting and unique location. The Riad itself is first rate. The decor, food, rooms and friendly approach make this a real home from home and help you to immediately feel relaxed. This is not a large impersonal hotel, but rather a unique, intimate and luxurious place of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, complete with a lovely plunge pool, roof terrace and court yard. All of the restaurants Michele and Grant recommended were excellent choices, and they took time to find out about our preferences before making recommendations. Naoual and Hicham were extremely helpful offering much insight from a local perspective and they always went out of their way to ensure we were well looked after, supplying us with copious Mint Tea (an amazing discovery) and cakes. If you want to visit Marrakech and are looking for a perfect place to stay with a friendly team to help you make the most of your experience then you need look no further.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Kaid Suite. Cant compare it to the others but can recommend it

When you navigate the narrow passages of the Medina between the high red adobe walls, you can only imagine what lies behind those intriguing doorways. So it was such a thrill to be able to go through one and find ourselves in such a beautiful, light, tranquil sanctuary , such a contrast to the buzz of Marrakech. You would never guess that the Riad has been virtually rebuilt from scratch, as such care and attention to detail has been taken, using materials and techniques that have been around for hundreds of years. From the antique cedarwood doors to the intricate plaster stucco work all cut out by hand in situ, the end result is exquisite. Michelle, one half of the enterprising team responsible, was there to greet the four of us with mint tea and Marrakechi nibbles before surprising us with welcome news of upgrades to suites. Hicham then kindly contacted the restaurant we were to due to dine at and delayed our reservation for us so that we had enough time to freshen up and enjoy a drink up on the roof terrace whilst watching the sun set over the medina rooftops and the storks flying in to roost for the night…just a magical start to our holiday. Hakim then walked with us to show us the way to the restaurant. Our rooms opened out onto the first floor gallery from which you look down into the central courtyard, complete with plunge pool and exotic plants & trees all open to the sky. Our suites, like the rest of the Riad, were stunning. Polished natural plaster walls, luxurious cactus silk drapes and lamps crafted just a short walk away in the metal workers Souk. Gorgeous spacious bathroom, with twin handmade, hammered metal basins and taps, spacious, powerful shower and modern loo. Filtered water, fruit and flowers were always available in the room. We had our leisurely breakfasts in the central courtyard, this consisted of teas or coffee, fresh orange juice, a variety of freshly baked Moroccan pastries and breads with jams and honey and a choice of egg dish or pancakes, fruit or cereal. We had booked a (mainly walking) city tour, via our travel company Audley for our first full day. Our lovely guide, Mr Habib, a retired lecturer, was excellent and gave us a fascinating insight into the history and culture of Marrakech. Second night we had booked dinner in the Riad under the stars. We enjoyed a traditional Moroccan feast with,a selection of briouats or pastilla to start, followed by tagines of lamb and prunes or chicken and apricots, followed by fresh oranges with cinnamon or almond tart to finish…delish. Third day, Noelle had booked a taxi for us to Les Jardins Majorelle, beautiful retreat of the late Yves Saint Laurent. The Berber Museum which now occupies his former home, although small was crammed with artifacts, all well worth a visit. We had arranged for our taxi to drop us off in the medina so that we could meet up with Michelle. My friend and I had mentioned to Michelle that we would like to buy a lamp, but were overwhelmed with the choice on offer. Michelle having used several lamp makers, has now weedled out the best for quality and value and kindly took us to meet Haj and his team of craftsmen at their workshops deep in the Souk. This also got us out of having to do the haggling bit which I’m uncomfortable with, as Haj just gave us a fair price to start, about a third of what we had been asked for elsewhere. Result... two happy new lamp owners and a happy lamp maker. Unfortunately, on the morning of departure to our next destination, one of our party had developed a tooth abscess. Michelle kindly asked our driver to call at a pharmacy where we could buy the necessary antibiotics. The feature that stood out most for us at Riad Assakina is the kindness, time and personal care given to their guests by Michelle and her team. Well done and thank you! You deserve every success.

A lovely Riad with a wonderful host to pass your time in Marrakech!
We arrived in Marrakech at the end of a hectic two-week trip through Spain and Morocco and found ourselves without a hotel for a night due to a glitch in our planning! We were prevented from having to spend the night in our car by Michelle’s extremely kind efforts in looking for a place for us to stay!
While she had just returned from vacation and her Riad was not yet open to receive guests – she managed in a very short time (and late at night) to phone around and find us a place to stay. This help was invaluable in our time of need and we are very, very grateful!
The next morning we checked into the Michelle’s own Riad. The place is tastefully decorated with beautiful touches. We were offered an upgraded room, the XXX suite, which was spacious, nicely decorated and very comfortable. The bathroom was modern with a well-functioning toilet. The sink drains were a bit slow, but this is to be expected in a country like Morocco where individual Riads cannot possibly alter the plumbing system of an old city. We encountered no problems with the hot water in the showers; there was plenty even for back-to-back showers.
The satellite television has a number of great channels which we enjoyed watching very much.
I must mention that when I arrived at the Riad, I was not feeling very well. Michelle came to the rescue again with medication which we gratefully accepted as the pharmacies in Morocco keep very odd hours!
We always slept in so never actually sampled the fantastic breakfasts other guests have raved about. However, Michelle did arrange for a packed breakfast for us to take to the airport for our early flight out of Morocco. Much appreciated!
The riad also arranged for our ride airport – a comfort and reliable service, which we would recommend.
Michelle’s service was superb and the staff were great, helpful and friendly. Overall, a very nice stay at a very nice Riad!

Beautifully transformed Riad in the heart of Marrakech. Wonderful decor only surpassed by the outstanding welcome of the owners, who are knowledgeable about the area as well as accommodating to specific needs, especially needs relating to your favourite cocktails! My husband and I had the most memorable and fun stay here for our second wedding anniversary, and we look forward to returning in the near future.

Room Tip: all the rooms are beautiful!

I visited Riad Assakina this August and loved every second of my stay. The Riad is a stylish and beautiful place which is ideal for relaxing, from having a dip in the refreshing pool to having a glass of wine on the roof terrace at night, it's all fabulous. Michele is a superb host and truly goes out of her way to ensure you get what you want out of your stay in the riad. This riad was to be the luxury last few days of our trip where we treated ourselves and it most certainly lived up to expectations. Thank you Michele.

Michele and the team at Assakina went above and beyond to ensure our stay was as enjoyable as it could be. From booking dinners to day trips and taxis, even leaving departure cards for us to fill out before heading to the airport!

We highly recommend staying at this riad as you will not regret it.

We spent a long weekend at the Assakina with some other friends and had a wonderful time. The riad is stylish, welcoming and very comfortable. The staff were superb - they really did cater to our every need and couldn't have been more helpful.
They were able to give us great recommendations on everything from hammams and places to eat to places to visit and places to avoid.
Following a French air-traffic controllers strike, Grant and Michelle had been unable to return before our arrival, but Noelle and Hicham were perfect hosts, and could not have done anything more to enhance our stay. I would thoroughly recommend this Riad to anyone visiting Marrakech.
