I am an American woman living in Casablanca and invited my 2 best friends from NYC to celebrate New Years Eve with me in Marrakesh. As an international teacher, travel is my passion and I always look to stay in the nicest place that my budget will allow! This trip was extra special though, because my two friends (who are not teachers) are used to traveling in style and I needed to find something that would please them and not kill me! Let me say this… Riad Dar Sholmes did more than deliver!
The Riad itself is Lovely. Warm. Welcoming. But the staff… Even Lovlier. Even Warmer. And Even More Welcoming. To say that Luc, the owner and amazing host, is detail oriented is an understatement. From picking us up at the train station, waiting with us for taxis, pouring our coffee or Moroccan tea, spa and restaurant suggestions and reservations to his selection of Moroccan décor and the custom designed beautiful marble fountain in the courtyard.. nothing is overlooked! I can’t possibly put into words the countless exceptional memories my friends and I experienced at Riad Dar Sholmes, from live music in the Riad, homemade breakfasts to wine on the roof deck and not to mention the proximity and convenience to everything Marrakesh has to offer.
There is one more experience that I can’t possibly leave out. On a prior trip to Marrakesh, I did a one day excursion to the Ourika Valley with an experienced and recommended guide (Moroccan) and I enjoyed it very much. I wanted my friends to experience something similar so Before arriving at Riad Dar Sholmes, I asked Luc if he could recommend a guide to take us on a similar tour and he said that he, himself, would be available. I was a little hesitant at first, having learned that he had been in Morocco less time than myself, but he had been so accommodating with reservations and questions that I figured.. why not? The excursion to the Ourika valley was not only just as good as the previous tour I had taken… It was exponentially better. Saw More. Experienced More. Aromatic Gardens. Countless photo opp stops. Argan Oil Cooperative. Hike to waterfalls. Lunch in a Berber Home! All of this and a doting host and guide. It was far and away the best day-excursion I’ve ever gone and at that is saying alot considering I had already been to the area!
Always looking for a new experience, I am not the kind of person that likes to stay in the same place twice. Riad Dar Sholmes is my exception – I wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else. There is one more thing that I would like to say… so simple but so true: It was just… So. Much. Fun!!!!!
