“A true Sanctuary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2010

The Riad Ajmal lives up to its name as a real gem in the middle of the old medina. It's only 8 minutes walk to the souq and around 12 minutes walk to the Djemaa-el-Fna (that's if you do not get lost, which is part of the fun). The wonderful owner, Madam Marie, has only recently taken over the management of the Riad. She managed to re-touch and upgrade the place in a short period of time. As you walk in the Riad, you will be greeted with a subtle aromatherapy scent and the plush comfy sofa at the courtyard invites you for a rest and a glass of mint tea.

I had the Joumana Room. The high-ceiling made of cedar wood is decorated with colourful Moroccan lamps. The bathroom is huge (almost the size of my studio apartment in London)! The bathroom is made of warm rose-coloured tadelakt. While there is no tv in the room, the whole Riad comes with unlimited high-speed wireless internet at no extra charge and to me, it is a real plus of this place.

There is a beautiful terrace with deck chairs which offer a view over the old Medina and for those who are starved of the sun, it's a good place to get a tan and while the afternoon away.

Breakfast is served in the beautiful courtyard and this is when Madam Marie adds her personal touch and charm to this place. Other than the usual breakfast-stuff, they serve French-pressed coffee!! I casually mentioned that I need my laundry done and (to my embarassment) Madam Marie personally handled and ensured that my laundry is attended to properly. She also gives excellent recommendations of places of interests and restaurants in Marrakesh and she even walks you to the nearby souq.

Airport and train-station pick-ups can be arranged easily with the Riad and that's highly recommended if you do not want to lug your bags all around the old Medina while trying to figure out the conflicting directions given by the boys in the old Medina.

Riad Ajmal is truly a wonderful place and if you are seeking a peaceful, quiet and pampered get-away, this is a place for you.

Had an absolutely great time staying here. It is clean, well looked after, tranquil, the owner, Marie is so lovely and helpful and so are her wonderful staff; Wafi, Rita & Fatima. We were very well looked after and really went out of their way to ensure we were happy and comfortable. Any time we wanted tea or drinks, Wafi was there to help in the evening, and the mornings are genarally run by Rita and Fatima. All the staff are very warm and happy and create a lovely atmosphere for their guests.
When we arrived, we were offered tea whilst Marie sat with us for a while and advised us on the area, sights to visit and kindly gave us a map. The first time we left the Riad, she sent Wafi with us which was a massive help as you do have to turn a few corners to get out on to the main street.
She also very kindly arranged our airport transfer which on the way back was at a very awkward time as our flight departed at 5.30am.
Marie's Restaurant recommendation was great, only a short walk away, a lovely French place called Terresse de Spices.
We stayed in Room Amjad- good sized room with double bed and a sofa. The shower is lovely and the skylight window brings in the sun which is beautiful.
The terrace is a great place to go and sit and relax in the early morning or the evening. The plunge pool on the patio is a lovely feature, shame we didn't have time to use it but I'm certain if we had visited during a hotter month we would have used it every evening!

It is a close walk to the Square and the Souks being located in the heart of the Medina. It is very easy to walk to the bus station if you want to head out to Essoiura or one of the cities for the day. Just be careful when buying coach tickets- avoid companies like 'Voyager'. It takes almost twice the amount of time to get to Essoiura and picks up most of the locals along the way, has no air conditioning and is very dirty inside! Try Supretours which has its own building a short taxi ride away from the Riad.

There are local shops just around the corner to pick up drinks, snacks etc. the shop down the first alleyway to the Riad is run by a lovely man and his son- like a hole in the wall style shop, very sweet people and their prices are more reasonable.
Don't be afraid to haggle when at the Souks- it's expected! And always agree a price with the taxi drivers before you get in.
After a long day of haggling, shopping and taxi riding, I assure you, this is a brilliant, relaxing, enjoyable place to come back to.

Excellent Riad, very well located in the heart of the medina.
The Riad is really clean, the team is amazingly wellcoming and always up to help.
Our stay in Marrakech was really nice, and the Riad and its personnel clearly contributed to it.

Having never been to Marrakesh, we chose our hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews, and they were not wrong. Our stay in the riad was so enjoyable and we felt so welcomed during our six night stay - I could not recommend this hotel more!

We were very welcomed to the staff and they provide airport transfer for us. They greeted us a drink when we arrived. Our room is so lovely and the bed is so comfortable. The breakfast is delicious and we had fresh rolls. They helped us with the trip quads at the dessert and helped us to book a taxi to the swimming park.. We are deaf and they did all the phone calls and walked us to the taxi and showed us the directions. Would go back again.

After a turbulent flight with several hours delay, we felt very lucky to be welcomed by the transfer service of the Riad Ajmal at the airport on Marrakech.
This initial experience continued, when we entered the Riad through a small entrance door and stepped into the pleasantly cool candle-lit interior courtyard of the hotel. We received a very warm welcome, a cool drink and when we reached our room we found a fruit basket waiting for us. So our initially troubeld first day of travel ended on a very positive note.
The overall great experience with this lovely place can to be overemphasized. The whole place has been lovingly restored and renovated, offers beautiful rooms, a roof terrace and a wonderful interior patio to relax and read. The level of hispitality that we received is one that is often hard to find nowadays.
The lovely staff are helpful with advice from the meal services offered to the things to do in the city and insights about the country and its people. We were able to select a special dinner with some extras that we asked for, accompanied by excellent wines, and all presented in a very appealing way in the courtyard..
The team arround Marie & Francin really manage to make one feel at home we think about returning soon to this wonderful place. In the time of design/boutique hotels that often lack a touch of warmth this Riad offers a haven of peace and excellent hospitality.

We really enjoyed our stay at Riad Ajmal. The location was perfect, close enough to the Djemaa el-Fna and souks to easily explore but just far enough away to escape the noise. The courtyard provided a lovely, relaxing setting to enjoy a drink at the end of the day and the terrace offered a great view of the Medina. Marie and her staff, Rita, Fatima and Ahmed were really excellent, friendly and helpful and looked after us so well. We had a couple of meals at the Riad which were prepared by the staff with freshly bought local produce and were really delicious traditional Morrocan dishes. We also had a private hammam there and would recommend this, very invigorating!
We couldn't recommend this Riad highly enough, it was just what we were looking for in terms of location, service and setting and Marie was a great host who made some really helpful recommendations for our first visit to Marrakech. They also sold beer and wine, which was an added bonus!
