“You will be dissappointed & potentially ripped off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2010

My husband & I pre-booked this riad from the UK via the internet. Upon booking we were requested to pay a deposit by bank transfer, slightly annoying & cost us £10, however we thought we really wanted to stay in this riad that sounded amazing - Oh how wrong we were!
Upon receiving payment the riad contacted me to advise we would stay at another riad, which we accepted, however, upon arriving they said we were staying at this one. We then had to move on our final night to stay in another riad, not sure why as they couldn't tell us - honesty, they had no idea what was going on.
Upon arriving in Marrakesh after an overnight train we sat down and were asked for the rest of our money, there was absolutely no welcoming feeling at this riad nor do they state anywhere that full payment was due the moment you arrived. We were eventually shown our room after waiting 30 mins in the cold, to find it unclean with dirty floors, we then showered & were standing in 4 inches of water & with the shower spraying water everywhere. After just 2 hours we were asked for money again, we informed the riad manager we could pay 2 nights in Euro & the rest in Dirham, this was a major issue and after 3 phone calls to the owner it was agreed we could pay this. We were charged a crazy exchange rate to pay in Dirham, however, that was their preferred currency, the manager was in our faces asking for money the moment he saw us. It appeared he could only speak English when asking for money & telling us what to do, however, if you asked or queried anything he did not understand a word.
They also said they had internet available, however, upon arriving we needed to wait 4 hours before they gave us a wireless device and then charged us for it!
There was a pool, however, I think you would risk your health if had got into it. It had a rather bizarre smell, was dirty and had dead insects lying on the top of the water - just disgusting!
They state that this riad is 5 mins away from Jamma el fna, this is totally incorrect, it took us 15 mins each day to walk to & from the riad into the centre.
All round our experience at this place was terrible, the manager was rude & incompetent and to be honest I think he tried to rip us off a couple of times when dealing with money. We spoke to other guests and they felt the same.

This place is the best on earth!

lovely, clean, nice local design, local staff!!!!!!! (sick of European management)... not far away from central square in a local area where u can socialize with kids, workers, anyone... fantastic integration in the community... you become a local! food at the riad is simply the best! they had just installed the AC when we went there + private hot tub with massage>>> so relaxing. i wish I could live there.

whatever you say this is located in the medina, in a local area, it s clean, food is the best and anything you need just ask for it! best place to stay and CHEAP. if not happy stay outside with retired people...here you get the truth with of the Magreb service.

thanks to the staff mustafa and ghita.

unfortunatly i booked this riad for our one week stay in marakech because i seems to be nice from the internet pictures.
as soon as we arrived, we dicided to leave immediatly and looked for some other place to stay.
This is my personal opinion:
the area isn't nice. we didn't feel comfortabl. dirty plants in the patio and a musty smalling bathrom.
we lost our deposit but finaly we found a lovly, charming, frendly place in marakech.

Also they asked for ..... "+ 4 euros tourist tax for 2 people" .... we didn't have to pay anywhere else. And .... " 7 mn walking from Jamma el Fna square" ... we need 20 minutes to gt there.

good luck!

Me and one friend did a week tour in south of Morocco and for our stays in Marrakech we chose Riad Tainam. We actually had an agency which arrange everything so they picked up us from airport and brought us to the Riad which is quite hard to find. The little street in the Medina is around 15 minutes far from the big place on foot and the last part is quite poor so if you are not very comfortable in walking around by yourself you'd better choose something nearer the big place or take a taxi (especially in the evening). By the way we are two girls and we managed to get around on foot apart from the evening. Not all the drivers know the address of the Riad so you may tell them that it's closer to Lyceum Mohammed V, this indication turned out to be very useful.
Location to me is the only not perfect thing to point out for this Riad. Infact, everything else was absolutely lovely. It's an oasi in the middle of crowded Marrakech, Moustafa (the guy at the reception) is very nice and helpful. We enjoyed the afternoon after the crazy shopping in the souk up in the terrace together with a wonderful mint tea.
Rooms are very clean a nice.
We had dinner a couple of time in the riad (on the gound floor) and actually tasted one of the best traditional tajine among the ones we had for the entire week.
It's definitely worth going expecially for a romantic escape.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at the Riad in March this year and were very impressed. The experience of Marrakech was somewhat hectic but in contrast Riad al Tainam offered a tranquil and safe haven from all the hustle and bustle outside it's walls!

If you are looking to experience the real marrakech than a riad is definately the way to go. They are located within the Medina generally hidden away behind walls with only a wooden door suggesting that something exists behind it.

Once you get through that door however it feels as if you have been transported into another word completely and you can easily forget about the hustle and bustle outside!. The Riad al tainam has 3 floors, all built around a small open air courtyard with a dipping pool. The ground floor consists of the dipping pool (more for decoration than actually dipping) and a series of alcoves where you can sit and dine. The 1st floor has 4 or 5 bedrooms and then the roof terrace has a couple of sun loungers and eating areas under tents to shade from the sun.
The building and interior decor is very authentic. We opted for the sapphire suite which I believe is a little more spacious than the other rooms.

The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Our rooms were cleaned daily. Each evening they would ask us what time and where we would like to eat breakfast the following morning. We opted for eating on the sun terrace. Breakfast was very good, consisting of fresh coffee, fresh juice, pancakes and jams etc. (all included in the cost of the room)

The Riad cook can also prepare evening meals for you on request. We opted for this one evening and were very impressed. We gave them our order earlier in the day and told them what time we would like to eat. The food was absolutely beautiful. In fact probably the best we tasted the whole trip, we dined next to the dipping pool in a small alcove, a very romantic and relaxing setting. The cost of the food was also very reasonable.

The Riad can also organise day trips to the atlas mountains etc. However we found that it was quite pricey. We ended up booking ours through a firm in the Medina for much cheaper. There are plenty of companies offering trips so shop around.

The only down side to the Riad al Tainam was it’s location. Although it’s only a short walk (approx 15mins) from the Square it does seem to be located in the poorer area of the Medina. I was ok as I was always accompanied by my boyfriend but I wouldn’t have felt safe walking to and from the Riad on my own, especially at night.

Parts of the Medina can get extremely crowded with pedestrians and motorbikes, this is all part of the Marrakech experience but at times I did feel a little overwhelmed! Be sure to keep a close eye or firm hand on any personal belongings.

I would also advise taking mental notes of the surroundings when you leave the Riad for the 1st time as we found it a little hard to locate after our first venture out. The narrow alleyways of the Medina are like a maize and you can guarantee on getting lost at some point!

In summary our stay at Riad al Tainam was lovely! If you are a female travelling on your own or if you are looking for a 5 star resort than this may not be for you. Otherwise I would highly recommend the beautiful, friendly, homely and Morrocan Riad al Tainam!

Having searched for many riads... I came a cross this riad's website which looks pretty reasonable in terms of price nad the pictures of the room looks decent.
I booked to stay in this place for 2 nights, about 6 mths in advance and transferred a deposit for the room bookings.
They also said that they booked a driver for us to pick us up at the airport, and we emailed our flight details over to them.
Unfortunately, when the time came, me and my husband got off the plane and found no driver...... so we took a taxi to the medina.
We couldn't find out hotel as we had no maps with us... so we had to asked a local to guide us there... and obviously in Marrakech, we tipped the local 100 dirham (as that was wat he asked for) after he helped us locate the riad.
Once in the riad we wasthere for an hour until they explained to us that our room wasn't available...!!! and that there had been a mix up. I wanted to ask for my deposit back so that we can just leave and find another riad as me and my hubby were tired and fruatrated. But the young man who worked there said he has no cash on him and the owner wasn't there... .. so he decided to help us find another riad... to put us up in.. in which this was another 30 min wait...... when we arrived at another riad... we had to explain that we paid £30 deposit and therefore it should be deducted from this new riad we are staying... and in good faith that's wat they did.. ... The new riad they took us to is called Riad Turquoise right by the Baddii palace.. and it was so much nicer and in a better location than riad Tainam.. so although Riad Tainam messed up on our bookings.. at least I can say they corrected it after an hr and a half. Unfortunately I can't comment on the rooms... as we didn't get to see it but the riad itself and the court yard seems ok... but location wise it did appeared a bit far out and was pretty difficult to find... ..
