5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2009

Had a wonderful 3-night stay in January 2009. The owners are photographers and the whole building is characterised by its stylish attention to visual detail.

The bathrooms are particularly luxurious. Breakfasts were excellent and the service faultless. Jallel, the manager, was enormously helpful in making arrangements for us (including at an external hammam) and providing recommendations.

The riad is a stone's throw from the main square, Jemaa al-Fna, but blissfully tranquil (even the 5am muezzin is muted!).

The only (minor) regret was that, while it is a nice idea to be able to connect your own iPod to the sound system, it did not really work in practice (in our room at any rate) as the iPod kept being overridden by the house music (which could become slightly irritating if one were to spend a long time indoors).

All in all, however, I would recommend Maison MK very highly, budget permitting.

We booked Maison MK for four days over New Year's based on the positive reviews here on tripadvisor. Unfortunately, our experience was not as positive. Yes, the riad is very well located, beautifully designed, and staff are very friendly. However, while we were there, the WiFi was broken, and there was a problem with the warm water - and having cold showers in December is just not fun. We stayed in the master suite, which is the largest and most beautiful of the six bedrooms. But it has one major drawback: the roof terrace is right on top of it, and after 8 AM, sleeping becomes impossible (it sounds like people are literally walking on your head). Also, the music system did not work properly in our room, and the remote control for the heating did not work either. Finally, the lovely coffee service in the morning was only offered on 2 out of the 4 mornings that we stayed there. So overall, it was a mixed bag - I am not sure whether we would return.

  • Liked — the roof terrace (sitting on it)
  • Disliked — the roof terrace (suffering from the noise it caused) and cold water

After 47 great reviews I guess there will always be the occasional unhappy guest. I called this lady to discuss the issues raised, which was very productive, & I also wanted to respond to her comments here in the public forum.

The "wifi was broken" - we still had wifi on the roof & the first floor, but the wifi on the ground floor was indeed broken for 1 week - the apple laptop we provide solely for clients use had to be connected to the modem directly in the reception - (fixing it involved hammering long holes in the walls to re-cable , not wise whilst guests were in ) - modem was still not a bad solution i feel.

"Cold showers" -Yes, the hot water boiler was definitely not at full capacity over new year - so the showers were not boiling hot. However the other 5 guests staying at the time (including peterdoyle9 - 5 stars on Jan6) did not even seem to mention it being a big problem & certainly didn't say the showers were cold. We had 2 different plumbers in the riad over 4 days to try to fix the problem. It now appears fixed & we are also flying our plumber out from the UK to look at the whole system to ensure this does not happen again.
Music system did not work - it worked for the previous & the subsequent guests - don't know their exact problem.
Remote control for air con - again, worked before & after them.
Coffee service - our fault - the £400 new grinder that we use had a problem & the overnight guardian did not tell us for 2 days that he was not putting coffee flasks outside the bedrooms at 6.30 am for guests. All fixed.

It is a shame that that this lady was unhappy - we genuinely try our best to ensure that all guests have a great stay. I am aware that they also posted a poor review of their restaurant visit for new year's eve & that the lady's partner was suffering chronic back pain (which we hopefully helped a little with an Osteopath that we arranged for him) - hopefully they will come back to Marrakech and have a lovely time on their next visit.
I had a very useful & helpful talk with the lady, but i just wanted to provide a public response to her comments so that both sides of the issue can be read by prospective travellers.

Many thanks,

Paul Hopkins - owner of maison mk

Maison MK is a well-appointed riad that is centrally located in the Medina, very close to Jemaa El Fna. The attentive staff anticipated all our needs, even seconds of the delicious homemade yogurt at breakfast as well as popcorn in the media room for our late night movie watching. Lovely personal touches like iPods and cell phones in each room are a nice addition. Jallel, the manager, will do everything to make your visit to Marrakech a truly special and memorable one. We can't wait to go back!

If you are looking for a Medina hotel - go to Maison MK. Recently built to a very high standard, the hotel has fabulous style, sumptuous decoration and painstaking attention to detail that sets it apart from other hotels in this part of the city. Staff are bright and attentive and the food delicious.
For those looking for quiet relaxation then be careful when booking a hotel in the Medina as there are regular calls to prayers from the many mosques and noise from the stone floors present the only real challenge for Maison MK.
My wife and I stayed at the hotel for four nights in November before heading up to the Atlas and we will remember Maison MK as a really cool hotel providing us with the perfect launch pad to explore Marrakech.

It is such a contrast to step inside Maison MK from the dusty, cobbled alleys of the Medina.

The hotel is so incredibly stylish and so tastefully restored. It really is beautiful.

As already mentioned by other reviewers, brilliant touches like your own 'pay as you go' mobile phone pre-programmed with all the key numbers you'll need and your own i-pod in each room really show the owners have thought about every last detail.

I would have no hesitation about booking Maison MK again.

However, I do have 2 peices of constructive criticism, which restricted me from giving it the full 5 stars:

1) At the time I stayed there, there was no drinks/food menu from which to choose items when lounging around on the roof terrace and whilst the team would rustle up anything you asked for, it would have been nice to have items to choose from.

2) I found the food to be great 'home cooked moroccan food' and would suggest they didn't pretend it to be any more than that. The 5 course evening meal sounded spectacular on the menu but whilst all beautifully cooked, was nothing more than solid home cooking. Don't pretent it's something it's not.

  • Liked — stylish decor
  • Disliked — lack of menu's

For my first time in Marrakech, I was very excited and worried at the same time, and on top of that choosing the Riad was a hard decision. There are over 400 riads in Marrakech tucked away in many of the little streets of the medina and you would think they are all very similiar. Maison MK is the proof that there are riads that are really really special, that will make your little break unforgettable. The moment you walk in, the perfumes and the vibrant colours embrace you in such a peaceful state, something new to me. I have been to many boutique and luxury hotels, but this particular one made me really feel at home. In the chaos of the medina and the souks, all I could think about was coming back to my paradise and talk to the lovely staff that make Maison MK even more special than it already is. The spa was unbelievable and sipping wine on their terrace was timeless. loved their bath robes, which I had to take with me.What else can I say, I will be back soon hungry for that peacefulness Maison gave me.

My husband and I wanted to celebrate our 10th anniversary with a trip to Marrakech. Although we travel frequently we had not been to Morocco before so we consulted friends, travel magazines, and TripAdvisor to find the best place to stay. Based on the incredible experiences and excellent feedback about maison mk on TripAdvisor (and a few emails back and forth with the riad) checking out the mk website and reading the fascinating blog that the owners wrote about their experience building the riad, we booked our stay at mk.

Before we arrived we were in frequent contact with Pauline and Jallel to book restaurant reservations in advance and also to coordinate transfers from airport and guides. They were incredibly responsive via email and assured us we would be taken care of. We could not have anticipated how amazing the service and attention we would receive would be until we arrived.

From the moment we arrived at the airport (one suitcase missing), we were in the excellent hands of the mk team. They would go back to the airport to fetch my missing suitcase, and gave us a wonderful tour of the riad upon arrival. We went to one of the dinners straight away - booked by team mk - and it was truly spectacular!

Our room at mk was so perfect - attention to detail was evident everywhere - from the in-room sound system with the best soundtrack on earth, to the rose petals, gorgeous tub, softest bed linens, wonderful toiletries, exquisite lighting, and of course there was more. First thing in the morning, your coffee tray is outside your door. When you are ready, head up to the gorgeous open terrace for a sumptuous breakfast - the best orange juice, breads, jams, homemade yogurt, ethereal eggs, coffee and tea. A dream and the view of the Koutoubia is fantastic from the roof.

Each day, Pauline, Jallel, and the other folks gave us sage advice about shopping the souks, where to have lunch, and sent us off with bottled waters. They arranged for drivers for dinner when necessary and we hired a driver to take us to the Quartier Industriel which is well worth a visit for Akkal and Amira Bougies. Team mk also introduced us to the local merchants within meters of mk - and all treated us like family. We'll be back to visit Mustafa for leather goods again!

The whole interior of mk reflected the wonderful taste and identity of Marrakech. We enjoyed many mint teas (love the kettle and toppers), beers, and wines while relaxing in the various nooks of the riad. We had a few lunches which were absolutely delicious - so fresh and well-seasoned and the absolute best sweet crepes on the planet! (I skipped crepes in Paris afterwards because I knew these were better!). The food at mk is excellent and it is worth enjoying at least one lunch and dinner during your stay.

Maison mk was immaculate! Everything was so clean and well cared for at the riad. We LOVED the hammam and the massages are legendary. I bought all the products I could possibly carry back.

There hasn't been a day since we got back home to San Francisco that we haven't thought about our stay at mk and how welcomed we were and we absolutely plan to return next year.
