“Fantastic weekend at Maison mk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

We timed this perfectly - escaping the rain in the UK and going to a destination with a good chance of warmer weather at the beginning of February. Due to restrictions on carrying liquids in hand luggage failed to take sun cream and got a little burnt - the sun can be deceptively intense out there! But how lovely to be dry and feel that heat. We were met at the airport and had a quick ride to the centre where we were met again from the taxi by Maison mk staff, and a very warm welcome on arriving in the riad - all very organised. The riad really is an oasis of calm just around the corner from the bustle of the souks and the Jemaa el Fna. The location could not be better, near enough to be able to wander our from the riad to the market and also close enough to where you can get a taxi to venture further afield. Inside Maison mk and up on the terrace it is so peaceful, even though in the evening you can see the smoke from all the cooking in the medina it is extraordinarily quiet. Maison mk is beautifully designed and decorated in a calming contemporary Moroccan style using soft earthy colours throughout with a lot of thought having gone into what guests might want during their stay. A wonderfully comfortable bed with the best quality bedding, a huge bath, power shower and thick bath robes - you will not be disappointed with the luxury. We stayed in room 2 which was more spacious than I had imagined with lovely personal touches that you wouldn't find in a larger establishment. The staff were full of character, cheerful and attentive, but not at all intrusive and made you feel totally at home. The food was delicious, carefully and freshly prepared and great Moroccan wines. I loved the fact that the breakfast alternates - but not just French and Moroccan, with yoghurt and delicious fruits, cheese and honey. Make the most of the spa at the riad, but you must book before you go. If you have never had a Hammam treatment it is a must. We had the Afternoon Treat which is where one of you has a massage for 45 mins whilst your partner has the traditional Hammam and then you swap, followed by full English afternoon tea which we had up on the terrace in the warm sunshine - absolute bliss. You will feel totally relaxed and at ease at Maison mk. We will definitely visit again and next time take a larger case to purchase some of the lovely things that Maison mk has to offer and also to buy some of the wonderful things found in the souks.

this place suited us down to the ground, cool, chic, relaxed style, good wine list, good food, good massage, small enough to feel personal service at its best.
1 helpful hint - just be sure to book things early if you want to be sure of getting your massage at the popular times as the spa is small (but very professional and a good strong massage).

Stayed here during the film festival, paid a massive premium and expected five star hospitality for give star pricing.

Riad was well managed, warm staff. Rooms were traditional in their decor. Breakfast was basic and alternated between French (croissants) and Moroccan (breads) with eggs.

A lot of heart and passion in building this hotel, but this is not 5 star, especially considering the price paid.

We needed a break from work and the endless bad weather in the U.K. this winter. We wanted all the little luxuries but didn't want to go for a safe choice of a big formal hotel. We wanted to be pampered and looked after and Maison MK did just that. It has all the home comforts and more, and lots of staff to look after you at all times of the day. Hanane the manager was a star with the continual advice she gave us on what to do and when, where to eat and even got us the best tables.
The massage in their little spa was just amazing. This wasn't our first trip to Marrakesh so we were astounded at the high quality of food, massage and service at Maison MK. We stayed in a top luxury riad two years ago also but somehow didn't feel comfortable or at home the way we did at Maison MK. The medina varies a lot and this area (south west of the Jema Fna) felt more calm and clean and was an easy place to find.
I would say if you want formal 5 star with all the boxes seemingly ticked in advance then this isn't the place for you, but if you want a 'real' experience, and all the things you really need, and more, delivered in a 5 star way, then look no further than Maison MK.

Room Tip: Room 1 is really cool and beautiful. Luxurious crisp bed sheets and sumptuous big bed. Huge deep ba...

I stayed with my wife at this riad for six days (five nights). We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and wanted to stay somewhere ‘special’. We looked for somewhere that was going to be ‘high end’. So we booked the ‘Master Bedroom’, which was not an inexpensive choice. When viewing options for accommodation in Marrakech, one thing that appealed to me, (apart from the location of maison MK), was their claim that, ‘Attention to detail is our mantra’.
Sadly, our experience was somewhat different;
Whilst the quality of the accommodation is excellent, there are so many aspects of the service which we received which were less than satisfactory:
• OUR BEDDING WAS NOT CHANGED FOR FIVE NIGHTS1!
• Our bathroom was not mopped during our stay
• On more than one occasion, at breakfast, our crockery was dirty.
• On several occasions we encountered damp upholstery when we went to the roof top terrace, either for breakfast or pre-dinner drinks
• MK provide tea or coffee outside our room at 6.30 each morning, (a pleasant touch), however these trays might sit outside the room for more than three hours and in a relatively warm climate, on no occasion did the milk jugs have a lid on.
• When we were staying the property was not at all busy, as part of the breakfast offer one morning French bread was included, when we asked for a little more bread we were advised that no more was available. If you are paying several hundred Euros a night, you would expect that there might be some simple flexibility around breakfast.

The other significant issue, is that the Master Bedroom is very noisy. We received significant noise from activities on the roof terrace ( immediately above the ceiling of the room ), each morning. However, more concerningly, the Mk riad is adjacent to a youth hostel type property, were on the Saturday night their significant noise continued until well after 2 am!

This property has some good attributes, but for the price it should be far far better.

Room Tip: The master bedroom (which is the most expensive room), can be very noisy because it is immediately b...

Oh dear, I am very sad to read this review – it is never nice to hear that a guest did not enjoy their stay at maison mk (although I see that they did give us a 5 star review for our restaurant, gastro mk – so at least they were happy with that part of the stay). As always, on long reviews like this, there tend to be some comments that we agree with completely, some that can be viewed one way or another, and some that we don’t recognize at all. So let me take them one by one…
1. “The quality of the accommodation was excellent” – very happy that they wanted somewhere special & high end & that we delivered that.
2. “The bedding was not changed for 5 nights”. We change all bedding every 3 days, or sooner if there is a stain / mark on it. It has always been this way & it is the same for all clients. Nobody has ever mentioned this before & the client did not mention it during his stay. We will add something to our in-room document saying that if you would like your sheets changed even more frequently then just ask the housekeeper. (The towels are all changed every other day, or more frequently if dirty or if the client requests it by asking or leaving in the bathtub as the signs indicate in the room). Sorry, but this may have been a freak accident, or some miscommunication, but it never happened for any other client & we have made sure the housekeepers are vigilant.
3. “the bathroom floor was not mopped during our stay”. We brush the floors every day in the bedrooms & bathrooms, and then we do a deep clean with the mop & wet floor between every guest stay. We consistently score 5 stars for the cleanliness of the riad so most guests find this cleaning regime to be excellent . I am sorry that it did not suit the needs of EXEC45.
4. “breakfast crockery dirty”. Apparently the night guardian had set the breakfast tables & had not noticed that a cup was not spotless. The client sat down & the waiter came over, immediately noticed the dirty cup & changed it before it was used. The dirty cup should have been noticed & it has been mentioned to the night guardian to be more vigilant. Not sure what the ‘more than one occasion’ was – nobody seems to be aware of that here.
5. “damp cushions”. All the cushions from the roof terrace are put under cover at night (because we never know if it will rain overnight at this time of year). They are brought out at 7am to be there for guests at breakfast. There is still a little dew as the sun rises so perhaps it was this that he didn’t like. I am not sure if there is a better solution – we want the cushions for breakfast time & some guests like to be up early & they will want cushions at 7.30. Others are happy to breakfast at 11am.
6. “morning coffee with no lids on the milk”. I am pleased that he found the morning coffee pleasant – it’s brought out from the best suppliers in the UK every month. He is absolutely correct, the milk should be covered – the lids for some of the milk jugs had been broken & we were waiting for a replacement order to come in. I will make sure this is remedied as soon as possible.
7. “not enough bread”. Yes, fair comment. This is the very low season in Marrakech so we had low occupancy & we order a large baguette for each couple for French breakfast days. (not JUST a baguette ! We also have croissants, Danish pastries, pain au chocolat, fruit salad, fresh orange juice, home made yoghurt, and a choice of eggs.). We have our staff travel 35mins each way to the best patisserie on the fringes of town to collect this one baguette early morning every other day and I’m sorry we don’t allow them to get more baguettes locally that all the other places get as the quality if vastly inferior. Exec45 was the last guest for breakfast and wanted more than one large baguette & unfortunately other guests had already taken the extra bread. I will ensure that we have sufficient baguettes in so that people can have more if they choose to. Generally people find our breakfasts far too big, which is the way we like it !
8. “bedroom is noisy”. In the past this was occasionally a problem because we found that a previous night-guardian had changed his shoes to hard shoes. When he was walking around the roof putting cushions away at night, his footsteps could be heard below. We replaced these shoes with slippers so now there should be very limited noise for a very limited period of time. I will double check that the footwear is correct & remind the night guardian to tread quietly.
9. “youth hostel”. Yes, there is another riad next door but nobody else has found noise to be a problem from this riad. There are always several riads all around you in the medina, as we are all linked in this old town. Occasionally there is noise in the medina from a wedding, celebration, etc, etc – just as we find in London. But mostly our neighbours (and us) respect each other’s space and keep noise down to a minimum, especially late at night. I am sorry that the client had his sleep disturbed until 2am – we have been round to visit the riad & asked them to ensure that there is peace & quiet late at night and as this is a first occasion , we will now be keeping a close eye on this particular riad – but we imagine it was a rare one off event and are deeply sorry it impacted on our guest.
I guess that addresses most of the points that EXEC45 made. I am sorry that he did not enjoy his stay & wish we could have had the chance during his stay to remedy many of the things that he mentioned. We always read feedback carefully, learn from it, and continue to try improve so we offer the best possible service to our guests. Most of the points that he has raised have not come up before, so I am slightly at a loss to know what was particular to his stay.
We have a lengthy in-room document and check-in is very thorough. We give a lot of attention to our guests so we will try to find another way to encourage this kind of guest to let us know if something doesn’t suit them so that we can immediately get onto the job of making their stay as wonderful as we can….as is always our aim, always.
Regards,
Paul

There are a load of super cool and groovy places to stay in Marrakech these days so it is hard to find a riad that really stands out, but Maison MK is class. It is chic, sophisticated and comfortable. There are great little design details everywhere you look - although possibly they could drown the rubber ducks. Each room comes with a local mobile phone charged and ready to go, and even better an iPod loaded with brilliant play lists to suit all musical tastes. Each room is differently designed but with orange as a strong colour theme. There is a wonderful roof terrace for relaxation, great views and exotic cocktails and famously good (but rather expensive) food. Highly recommended.

This Riad was booked well in advance and when we had to cancel our reservation literally hours before arrival in Morocco due to unforseeable circumstances, the management was extremely knd and moved our booking to some other time.

Upon arrival we found that they were all very hospitable. The small riad has got a dining room which could have a little bit more character, but the lobby, the smoking room, the terrace and especially the very romantic rooms are absolutely adorable. Location is perfect too.

I would recommend this riad to everyone.
