“Beautiful and Peaceful Dar in the Medina”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2010

My husband and I stayed at Dar Roumana in the Tamarind Suite for 2 nights in April of 2010.
It was a beautifully restored Dar. The breakfast was wonderful and our English speaking guide, Hakim, who the hotel manager booked for us for the whole day was the best. We learned so much and we got all our souvenir shopping done quickly, since we only had one full day in Fez. He took us to places, like a pre-school, that we couldn't have gone on our own. The only issue we had with this Dar was it's location; it was hard to find and get to; of course this is true of most places in Fez's Medina! Also, they were doing construction right outside the front door, which was shocking at first site. Our room was beautiful and huge. The staff was very helpful as well.

We had such a lovely time at the Dar Roumana. Fern and Jono are excellent hosts, incredible chefs and lovely people. More than the gorgeous surroundings, stunning rooftop views, delicious gourmet foods, and luxurious rooms...the energy they have created in the Dar is outstanding and cannot be replicated. We stayed at another Riad suggested on this site and were sadly disapointed. We only hope they will have some availablity for us when we visit again! :)

Not much else to say that hasn't already been said about Dar Roumana.

Plus side:
- Inside the Medina while still isolated from the noise
- Amazing views. You will spend quality time on the roof.
- Helpful Owners. Jennifer did provide advice when I asked her (on TA) about Riads with a Pool. Not something your average Riad Owner would do. Honest opinion and helpful restaurant advice. Try the Italian they recommend (not the one listed in Frommer's) and the restaurant nearby in the Medina where someone comes to pick you up and walk you there.
- Decent sense of privacy: Not many rooms and enough common areas
- BEUTIFUL Dar! Amazing suite. We had the biggest (Yasmina?) and I recommend it

CONs
- VERY firm bed . We had to sleep on blankets to be comfortable. I'm surprised I haven't read about this here. I usually like firm beds but this was too much (My friend actually dreamed that under the sheets there was cement :) But in all fairness we found that mattresses in Morocco were really on the firm side. Funny enough, we had the same problem with the other top experience in Morocco (Jardins De Skoura)

Highly recommend Dar Roumana. Can't comment on current Management but I'm sure the owners won't leave the guests in the wrong hands, given the slice of the market they are catering to.

When you get in, you will think to be in Paradise; absolutely lovely, marvellous, enchanting. Pls start dreaming as you were the king of Fes. I won't tell you about breakfast, tee time or dinner....you have to discover all that by your senses. If you can, pls ask for Tamarinde suite

If you want to stay in a first-class place, run by a first-class staff, look no further. Dar Roumana is a painstakingly restored riad, tucked away on a high perch in the medina, five minutes from Talaa Kabira, Fes's main drag. The courtyard, terrace and library are particularly magnificent.

As great as the surrounds are, Jennifer and Mohamed's perfect hospitality really made the place feel like home. Jennifer's local knowledge of Fez (and Moroccan stomach bugs, and cures for them) is a great asset, especially for solo travelers. Furthermore, even after what may have been the windstorm of the decade wreaked havoc on the roof, breakfast was served, on time, with a smile, delicious as ever. Quite a place!

This is a beautiful facility with only a few rooms. It is a bit off the beaten path, but not very far from the main streets of the medina. It is very near the Sofitel Palais Jamai. The heater in the room worked fine, but the public spaces were cold, despite the cover over the courtyard. There is a large space heater in the courtyard, but they only lit it at night for people having dinner there.

The specialty of this riad is its three course gourmet dinners. The dinners and wine are expensive, but very good and a nice change from tajine. The owner, Jennifer, has turned over day to day management to a young couple who will be replaced by new people in June, but one of them will certainly be a gourmet cook. If you do not want to eat there, the managers will recommend other places, including a nearby family-owned Moroccon restaurant. One of the waiters will actually come get you and lead you there and back. The night we ate there, the mixed Moroccon salad that came with our meal consisted of 15 different dishes. Although the breakfasts are typical of top-end riads, we were a bit disappointed given the gourmet reputation of the riad.

There are good views of the city and hilltop ruins from the rooftop terrace. Laundry service was reasonably priced.

can't heap enough praise on this place - it is absolutely stunning (carefully redone old Moroccan house with much attention to every detail on every tile and piece of stucco) - in a perfect location in the old medina (all must see sights are in easy walking distance); the management and staff are incredibly helpful - each guest receives individual care; the food is absolutely delicious; each one of the five available rooms has character and charm; if you want to do Fes in style, stay here!
