“Spectacular. And eat the Food! New chefs!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2009

I'll simply emphasize that I agree with almost everything said before, except that the food has changed! Two new managers took over just a couple months ago. They're both professional, life-long chefs, and it shows. I didn't eat at the restaurant previously, so can't compare, but Justine and Didier are serious, accomplished pros. Even if you can't stay here, you should eat here. We're sad we didn't come sooner. (If you're arriving late in the day, be sure to call/email ahead to reserve dinner for yourself, as everything is bought fresh that morning at the market...)

Fes is a city of wondrous houses and beautiful architecture. This house is magnificent like many, and located relatively conveniently (for the Medina) to taxis. Our room was palatial in both size and decoration. The 360-degree view from the roof is breathtaking. They've got internet, a library, a fireplace, and more. But the really amazing thing about Dar Roumana is Didier and Justine, who are just wonderful people and tremendous hosts. They and their staff took care of everything for us while we were there. But then blowing our minds with their amazing cooking after all that other hospitality? Show-offs. :-)

(Note: the location is remarkably central to the rest of the medina, given the commanding view it has, and is only about 5-10 minutes' walk away from the main streets.)

WOW....We found this Dar in the Lonely Planet guidebook. Dar Roumana is one of those magickal places that you want everyone to know how fantastic it is, yet you also want to keep it a secret.
Our honeymoon included driving through Morocco and visiting various cities, but Fes was the highlight of our trip. The passion for this city i believe was inspired by the double rainbow that we saw in the sky at the entrance to the Medina, the very warm and organised welcome received by Didier and Jennifer and the plush and exotic interiors of the Dar.
This charming Dar captures all the elements of what one reads about. Its location is ideal and its positioning along a windy pathway and hidden in literally a hole in the wall makes for great fantasy and excitement. It has the most fantastic view from the terrace and the Dar is exceptionally clean and every details has been thought of.
The hospitality of this Dar was so comforting, from the afternoon teas with the tortoise and the amazing dinners which we wished we had of booked for every night of our stay.
I still long for our evenings in front of the fireplace and waking up to the traditional breakfasts. I feel that absolutely nothing at this Dar could be improved upon. The Value for money was excellent and i hope to return very soon to once again feel like royalty.
Thank you

We do a lot of traveling and this will be remembered as one of our all time favorite hotels. First off, staying in a riad in Fes is much more interesting than staying in a Western style hotel. Staying in a riad in the Medina gives you a real sense of life in this ancient city. The feeling inside the hotel is very intimate (because there are so few rooms) but also very private. Dar Roumana has been beautifully restored and the couple managing it, Justine and Didier, are terrific. They were incredibly responsive (we used email) when we were arranging our trip from the United States and they remained so when some glitches appeared in our travel plans, giving us constant (we had a Blackberry) updates on how to get to the hotel when our plane from Casablanca was cancelled. They are both professional chefs so the food in the hotel is terrific and their restaurant recommendations are very good. We made the mistake of not taking the cooking class offered by Dar Roumana which involved going with Didier to the market and then cooking a Moroccan dinner. If you stay here, and you should, take the cooking class. What an opportunity we missed by not going to the market and walking through the Medina with someone who actually knew what he was doing and could teach us more than we could ever figure out on our own. Luckily we opted to eat in the hotel that night and it turned out to be our best night in Morocco. Justine and Didier create such a great atmosphere in the hotel it is difficult to leave. They are knowledgeable about the area, fun and attentive to each guests needs. Lastly, Dar Roumana is very reasonably prices. We stayed in a riad that was almost three times as much money in Marrakesh but not nearly as good an experience as this one.

Dar Roumana is one of the firtss guesthouses open in Fès ... It is a very beautiful and comfortable Dar, set next to the bonderies, wich is an exceptional situation: easy access by car, but also view on to the hills ... As far as the view is concerned, let's say you have one of the bests in the medina !

The House is large and very well restrored. But also very comfortable. Also the atmosphere is quite casual, it is often that you hear some longe or jazz music in the patio. Evening dinner is also a good choise. Little fountain, candles etc ... You have some places to rest, or have a chat: a salon with fire place, a "bartal", a huge library with mezzanine wich is my favourite place ... And the terrace itself, where you can sun bath ... ( there is also a bbq ... ). TV Room with DVDs ...

The rooms, I've seen them all. 2 of them are located on the ground floor. Classical "suite style" open on the patio. Large bathrooms. 2 of them upstairs - situated each part of the library. More interesting than the one downstairs. One of them has a private balcony where you can have your breakfast. It has also many windows with coloured glass, wich makes a beautiful light especially in the morning. It is a very large room, great to step into the movie ! The last one used to be the private appartment of the two owner, Jenn ans Sebastian. Cheaper and smaller, still nice ... but not as stunning as the other ones ...

Breakfast is a good moment. Fruits, omelette etc ...

The welcome of the guests is a good quality. Actually, I have tried several accomadations in Fès, and I admit that this one is the one I would finally advise due to those qualities ( terrace, library, different rooms, access )... and architecture ! It is beautiful here !

Thanks Jenn ans Seb, see you soon.

Benj.

I couldn´t have chosen any better.
Dar Roumana was a beautiful experience from start to finish. The house is an old riad restored and refurbished with love by its owner, Jennifer, with so much attention to detail and to the original building. The location is wonderful: On the verge of Fes medina, without the hassle, but just one minute away from the ancient little streets.
My room, the Argana suite, was a wonderful, quiet, secluded room tucked away and accessible through the old stairs of the house. The shower gel, lotion and shampoo were served in little ceramic bottles as opposed to the typical plastic ones, to be environmentally careful, and they had a really nice scent. I´m so glad you could purchase 200 cc bottles of them to take with you…
But the stellar point was the warm and wonderful people who work at the riad, and how they treat their guests. They can even cook amazing dinners for you if you tell them in advance!. I did that on my last night there, and was delighted.
Thank you, Jennifer, Sebastián, Reta, Didier, Justine and Bouchta, for making my stay at Dar Roumana and my trip to Fes so sweet!.

Dar Roumana has many things going for it, the following are but a few:

- Amazing Owners (Jennifer/Sebastian) and Managers (Didier/Justine). Easy going, friendly and fun. The type of people you would like to befriend

- Delicious food - Didier and Justine did an amazing job with the food; ensure you have at least one (if not all) meal with them. Justine does a bang up job on the desserts

- Bushka - the night watchmen with all the hookups and connections; a wealth of knowledge and a really great guy

- Great, well priced service. All prices above and beyond the cost of the room e.g. laundry, are very reasonable (we used the laundry service quite a bit)

And of course the Dar itself is beautifully restored and will exceed your expectations.

We might quite a few interesting guests at this Dar, and shared a few late nights just having a good laugh chatting with them.

If ever we go back to Fes, this will definately be the place we stay.

P.S. you can get more oppulent Dars/Riyads, but the combination of people, service, food and price cannot be beat

We have just returned from Morocco and started our trip with a stay at Dar Roumana. From the point we were met at the gate to the Medina to the moment we (reluctantly) left, the trip was fantastic. The house is beautifully restored and the rooms are characterful, spacious and very romantic. We ate at the Dar too and the food was magnificent - they catered for a vegetarian requets without fuss and the whole meal was a treat in the delightful courtyard.

Also, I must recommend Hakim, the guide proposed by the Dar. He was engaging, thoughtful, intelligent and funny with a great knowledge of the Medina. If you only have limited time in Fes, I wholeheartedly recommend asking for Hakim to show you around. Everything you could hope for in a guide of this amazing city.
