Fes was our family's first stop on a two-week vacation in Morocco, and although we had an amazing time and stayed in some beautiful places, nothing came close to Dar Roumana. When you are waiting on the street for the rather plain door to open for the first time, you can't imagine the beauty that awaits you inside. We stayed in the Yasmina and Tamarind suites; both were exquisite. My two teenage daughters felt like princesses! The architecture of Dar Roumana is different than what we found in Marrakesh; in our opinion the dar's white walls, intricately carved cedar wood, very high ceilings and beautiful tile was both stunning and peaceful in its simplicity. Our family felt as if we were in a private home, with a beautiful library space between our two rooms where we could sit and read. (And it WAS a private home for many years). We were never bothered by the quiet diners in the courtyard downstairs (my husband and I joked that it was sort of like we were kids upstairs in our rooms while our parents hosted dinner guests downstairs). Vanessa, Vincent and their staff were very helpful and knowledgeable; Violetta did beautiful henna for my daughters one evening while chatting sweetly with them. (In fact, Vanessa was incredibly helpful to me in planning our whole trip, arranging train tickets for us, guides, a cooking class, a private hammam and a private driver). Vincent's dinners are superb. We were very sad to leave Dar Roumana and I cannot WAIT to get back there.
