“A Special Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Fes riad has a special place in the medina. The building is a striking example of Moorish art and craft -zelij tiles, plaster work, cedar woodwork. Imaginative extensions for the dining and pool areas. Spacious suites. Beautiful menus - wonderful lamb tagines. Good local wine list. Lovely roof terrace to enjoy a drink in the early evening.

This is a lovely Riad, our room was on two levels, bathroom downstairs and bedroom, sitting room upstairs. We loved the layout but some older people may not like the internal stairs. It has many beautiful features and the new additions work well. The restaurant meal we enjoyed very much and the bar staff in the courtyard were friendly and looked after us very well.

Despite the fact that the Riad didn't have the two rooms available as we had reserved months in advance... they helped us find acceptable accomodations for half of our party in a riad close by. Initially we were very unhappy with this arrangement but the staff was very helpful, friendly and attentive. Our adult children were able to join us for breakfast, the use of the pool, spa and dinners. When a room was available they moved in as well.
In addition to a delightful staff, the place is beautifully decorated. It was a pleasure to return to this lovely 'oasis' after a day of sightseeing in the hectic Medina of Fes. The rooftop terrace is not to be missed!

This Riad is absolutely a great place to stay. We were there for 2 nights and we enjoyed every minute. The room was very nice and quiet big for a Riad. The pool-area was a very nice place to relax and have a drink or eat a little lunch. We had dinner twice in the Restaurant! It was just great food, tasty and a gool quality. The breakfast buffet was good with a good variety of local and international food. We can highly recommend this hotel! The staff is very friendly and helpful.

This is a gorgeous hotel located inside the Medina. Make sure you have breakfast in the hotel, it is delicious. Some of the rooms are spectacular, some are so-so. When you make your reservation make sure you request one of the larger rooms; it makes a big difference. Some of the people in our party stayed in the smaller rooms, and they were not happy at all. Dinner is good, and the terrace has the greatest view of the city; but be very patient. One night the waiter was taking so long, that he asked me if he could bring the check to me the next day!!!

Room Tip: Paying the little extra for the junior suite makes a huge difference.

What a visual delight the Riad Fes is, a calm and peaceful haven after bustle of the lanes of the Medina. The Riad is a stylish and elegant restoration and transformation of 3-4 large houses, providing large airy rooms decorated in traditional style with every modern comfort around charming courtyards. The roof terraces provide an excellent sunset view over the Medina and further to the hills of Fes. The staff were in general very friendly and helpful although some room maintenance had to be requested twice. Our stay was slightly marred by travellers belly from three of the party. Wifi access is available in the lobby only, reaching to the original rooms opening on to this area.

Perhaps the strangest Relais entrance you ever will encounter, up a zig zag of alleys on the edge of the medina (the large old Islamic town) for the hotel is an amalgam of three large adjacent old houses, congealed and renovated grandly, so the hotel does not stand apart but is integral part of the medina, a labyrinth of alleys and narrow streets threading one mass of structures, dating back, improbably, over 1200 years to 9thC AD. This is best appreciated from the roof, la terrasse panoramique, and what a view, see the medina sprawl in a shallow basin, and the ville nouvelle (new town built by French after 1912) perched on plateau left. So inside the hotel we have big courtyards, two grandly decorated in traditional Islamic style, and rooms all about, accessed by a web of steps. Rooms are grand, wander and sprawl, and our ceiling (ground floor room) was high enough to host its own weather. The dining room fare is excellent, like the chef’s special lamb in smoked onion jam. Staff very amiable. Excellent swim pool. Gym is basic but works. But... the internet battles, slow, intermittent, but gets there, and watch your step, there are many unsuspecting steps about the premises, up and down, causing the unwary to tumble or stumble.
