“Interesting”

If in Fez, a must stop to see. Very interesting to see the process and the real Moroccans working and living.

“Cool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014

I love seeing medieval life in action, and this place is perfect in that respect. This is the real McCoy, not a tourist re enactment. We were taken through a maze of shops, given mint to hold in front of our noses (though it wasn't that smelly in mid April), then we were shown a really good viewing spot. A man who worked in the shop explained the process to us. We tried to tip, him, and he wouldn't accept. We did end up buying a small item, but we weren't pushed into anything. The various pits are colorful, and the men who were working below were doing a horrible job when we were there, scraping the muck off the hides to make them more supple. Our teens were fascinated, and we all agreed it was a spectacular thing to behold. Do not miss this while in Fes.

“You have to see the tanneries”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2014

So much more beautiful and informative than the tanneries in Marrakech. Yes, you do have to look at the shops underneath but you don't have to buy anything. Awesome photo opportunities. Do not miss.

“must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

as you walk through the medina you will feel you are walking back in time. The deeper in you go, the more authentic it becomes and the better you will understand the history of this great city. There are a lot of surprising facts you will learn as well. Get a good guide or at least a good guide book to help you!

“A Must-See”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

I cannot imagine traveling to Morocco and not witnessing first-hand this method of tanning and dying hides. An absolutely fascinating sight -- the workers, the array of colors, the process. For me, this was one of a handful of peak Morocco trip experiences.

I told my guide at the beginning that I was not interested in shopping and he left me alone to enjoy the scene. I think it is possible to be kind and firm in this way and to get out with your humor and purse in tact.
