“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

If you are with a guide they take you to a leather shop which overlooks the tannery and the owner will give you a tour and let you take pictures. They will also give you some fresh mint to help with the smell of the ammonia which is used to soften the leather.

The tanneries are quite incredible and the main tannery employs 250 people.

It didn't smell too bad either!

Expect a tour of the leather shops after. There are some amazing goods but be sure to start with a low offer. We paid around 50% of the asking price but I'm sure if we had tried harder we would have gotten a bit more off!

I would set a price in your head first and be prepared to walk away - if your price is reasonable they won't let you walk away!

“If nothing else in the medina, go to the tannery!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

It was the most spectacular place in the medina! Not only do they give you some mint tea, but also fresh mint and a tour of the store with a guide and history lesson. Abdul took us to the top and showed us all of the buildings in the medina and their history and also told us which ones we are allowed to go into and the times that they were open. The leather alone is so incredible, they employ hundreds of local people who live in the medina, so if nothing else, get a cheap wallet as a souvenir. We bought leather jackets, and they did the alterations for us both and had them delivered to our hotel. What amazing service! They also have every style of purse you can think of,I had to buy two and the hubby bought a pair of babushkas (a sort of moccasin or sandal).

“Strangest of places”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

I saw this from a roof top of a leather shop that wanted to give us a tour and show us the tannery in hope we would buy some of their goods. We didnt and that didnt please the owner but who cares :)

Anyway you MUST see this. It is such a strange experience. The smell is so over powering but you can quickly get used to it if you have a strong tolerance. Have someone explain to you the process from A to Z and you will be fascinated. Just amazing how leather is made in this way.

The owner told us that this place is a cooperative and everyday a new family comes to make leather. There is no central ownership so it helps the poor make their way up. If you are in Fes, i would recommend you get a tour guide and once you do make sure he/she takes you to this spot.

“A visit is recommended but in wintertime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

This is probably one of the "most wanted" places in whole Fez but a visit is highly recommended in wintertime and also if you have time to spend (and you're not in a hurry).
At the entrance you'll get fresh mint to put under the nose in case the smell can cause you some stomach problems but when I visited this place I was terribly lucky cause even it was a sunnyday the air was fresh and windy too.
I spent lot of time taking picture of the hard work inside the tanneries, and also had time to drink a mint tea while I was choosing leather goods (of a very good quality).
The dyes used in the tanneries are made of natural materials: a pungent mixture of pigeon poo, acids and cow urine. 100% eco!!!
